Most of society will say they support equal rights for homosexuals. Ask the same members if they support gay marriage and they become hesitant. Recently the majority of Americans will vote for the Constitutional Amendment, which puts a ban on gay marriage. Ironically, these same Americans do believe in the equal rights to the gay community just like any other heterosexual citizen. In my personal opinion, gay marriage should be globally accepted
The biggest misunderstanding in this hot topic is that those of the gay community have a "choice" to whom they can feel attracted to but simply choose to be gay. Just as heterosexuals do not "choose" who they are attracted to, neither do homosexuals. Multiple anti-gay groups claim that “homosexuality is preventable and treatable” as well as "living as a homosexual is not as happy-go lucky as frequently portrayed in the entertainment media.” How can someone with no personal experience of being gay say that homosexuality can be "changed," or even whether a homosexual can be happy or not? What about the research done proving that homosexuality is purely genetic? No one "chooses" to live a life filled with prejudice and discrimination. Even I, being a bisexual individual still receive “advice” on how to “save myself” and am often told that “there is still time to save myself.”
Homosexuality is often looked at as being purely about sex, often being called a "sexual perversion.” The reality is that homosexuality is varied. Sex, in any committed relationship, is a means of expressing love. This is true whether in a heterosexual or homosexual relationship. Love is unconditional. Well, take a look at who many of these critics allow to marry and raise children: murderers, child molesters, convicted felons of all sorts, and so on. Yet this preferred to a gay couple free of criminal history that in fact does embrace morals? If a same-sex couple can provide a loving and caring home, then where is harm done? The child, as well as the love for the child, must be a priority in every family, no matter the gender of the parents.
Gay marriage is defined as a legal union between members of the same sex. Ten percent of Americans, because of their sexual orientation are denied the right to marry. As a country we need to move away from illogical reasoning, whether it be based on ignorance or prejudice. We need to allow every individual the civil right to wed his or her life partner.
