Teachers have the most demanding and significant job on the planet: to equip the next generation with the information and lessons they need to lead our world into future success. It is foolish to believe that all students will be able to retain and apply everything they learn in the classroom. Our problem is solved by using the world we live in to teach lessons through application. These types of “lessons” can be taught to any age group and are most commonly referred to as field trips.

Field trips solve this issue. A survey sent out to 60 field trip site coordinators, and 63.3% of them responded (Nabors). The responses showed that students acquired knowledge at the various field trip sites by experiencing first-hand what an accurate representation of the content shown on the site looks like (Nabors). The students were engaged and involved in research. The study showed students displayed personal satisfaction, enthusiasm, and appreciation of the site-specific content addressed in the field trips: all of which are examples of affective learning (Nabors).
A little over five years ago, I traveled to China with my family. This experience taught me about Chinese culture, history, and customs. While it is definitely not a normal “field trip”, it showed me how experiencing life can provide extended lifelong learning. During the trip, I had the opportunity to walk on the Great Wall of China. Only walking a small portion of the wall in comparison to the thousands of miles it runs, I learned about and witnessed the extravagant architecture built centuries ago.
