Electric Cars Win Over Gas - Powered Cars Did you know that Cars were seen as the “green” alternative of transportation in the early 20th century because horses were causing so much pollution with their poop. Well, now we know that the poop is not a problem. In a way, it actually helps. The problem is cars, to be more specific, gas-powered cars. For a long time, I wanted to say that we should get electric cars instead of gas-powered and why, and that day is today. Gas powered cars release a number of harmful pollutants into the sky such as, Particulate matter (PM), Hydrocarbons (HC), Carbon Monoxide, and Sulfur Dioxide. These air pollutants give humans harmful illnesses such as leukemia, lung cancer, and respiratory problems. Some of them are, Hydrocarbons (HC)irritates the respiratory system, causing coughing, choking, and reduced lung capacity. Nitrogen oxides (NOx). These pollutants cause lung irritation and weaken the body's defenses against respiratory infections such as pneumonia and influenza. Carbon monoxide (CO). This odorless, colorless, and poisonous gas is formed by the combustion of fossil fuels such as gasoline and is emitted primarily from cars and trucks. When inhaled, CO blocks oxygen from the brain, heart, and other vital organs. Fetuses, newborn children, and people with chronic illnesses are especially susceptible to the effects of CO. Sulfur dioxide (SO2), Powerplants and motor vehicles create this pollutant by burning sulfur-containing fuels, especially diesel. Sulfur dioxide can react in the atmosphere to form fine particles and poses the largest health risk to young children and asthmatics. Over time these particles build up in your body and sometimes cause death to some children. These harmful pollutants cause about 5.5 million deaths every
