To the average American, the dangers of drunk driving may not seem important. You may think it occurs very little and the chances of personally being affected are slim. Most people also think drunk driving mainly occurs at night. The reality is, that it is happening everywhere, at all times. Watch the news long enough and chances are, you will see numerous reports of fatal drunk driving related accidents. At some point when you were in a car, you have probably seen the driver in front of you start to swerve or drift out of the lane. These can be signs of a drunk driver. Drunk driver’s senses are dulled; their minds do not process situations, their sight is impaired and their reflexes are slow. Even though there are several laws aimed at preventing drunk driving, there are still thousands of drunk drivers on the road incapable of being behind the wheel. People who are caught driving drunk should receive jail time regardless if it is their first offense. This would save thousands of lives and keep our roads safe. Michal Collins was a victim of drunk driving. He was only 22 at the time with a bright future ahead of him. The driver who hit him had a history of drunk driving. A similar incident happened to Andrea Herrera and Eric Fisher. On October 10, 2013, their lives were cut short when a drunk driver stuck their car (MADD Archives). This driver also had a long history of drunk driving. Thousands of people are killed by repeat offenders, who are careless and have not learned their lesson. Jail time on the first offense would be an incentive not to drive drunk. Most people do not want to go to jail, so less people will drive
