Numerous kinds of aircrafts have been used as objects of surveillance over the years in order to facilitate acts of war. That surveillance dramatically changed, however, when Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), or drones, were introduced. These aircrafts were designed to be operated without a pilot on board and are often enabled with weapons and employed for military operations. Drones, as if they weren't capable enough, are usually equipped with cutting-edge surveillance technology, including movement sensors, GPS, heat sensors, and cameras that make it possible to identify individuals on the ground from miles above (Stepanovich). Though they are not currently allowed in the airspace that contains most manned aircrafts, which also exists over many major urban areas, drones are becoming increasingly popular objects as a means of control in our nation (Federal Aviation Administration). Assuming that they follow the same trend as many elements of technology, drones, as they continue to be integrated domestically, will only become smaller and more sophisticated. Concerned for the safety of the airspace, the federal government has set some limits for law enforcement's use of drones for surveillance tactics, but they didn't stop police in Houston from carrying out secret drone tests in 2007, which ended up being filmed (Crump and Stanley). As aerial surveillance becomes more of a routine operation enacted upon us by law enforcement and military officials, the realization that the character of our public life is profoundly changing sets in.
