When people think about a vehicle travelling across the road, they simply see one image in their mind which is a driver at the steering wheel. The driver is in control of that vehicle. The driver is very critical. Remove that specific driver form the vehicle, and most would believe: this would cause a huge disastrous situation. Or would it? For some time now, autonomous technology has been tested and developed by various engineers and multinational companies. Despite this, the thought of a car without someone in control raises feelings of doubt and disbelief. Recently, according to the article Wired, google has tweaked six Toyota Prius cars and one Audi TT, creating a very small fleet of driverless beta cars [8]. The report explains that these vehicles have passed thousands of kilometers in the roads of California, while a software engineer rides onboard prepared to override the system at any specific time [8]. According to Brown B, author of The Social Life Of Autonomous Vehicles, the prototypes are equipped with a LIDAR on the roof, which stands for Light Detection and Ranging and it is very accurate and can measure the distances plus or minus 2 centimeters to the actual length [2]. Another system contains radars surrounding the vehicle on the front bumper and sides measuring “acceleration and rotation” [1]. All that information is combined by the lasers and the two cameras on the windshield then processed into an algorithm which is a huge database of the vehicle’s software. Brown confirms that “the systems can make decisions very quickly and control the throttle response and brakes of the vehicle with incredible speed, much faster than humans” [1].
