Dogfighting is an inhumane blood sport where sad dogs are pitted against each other and forced to fight for their owner’”s profit and as spectator entertainment. One dog named “Miss Rufus” spent a match stuck on her back as a dog named Bandit broke both of her front legs and a back leg. Bandit also chewed Miss Rufus’”s last leg and ripped up a chunk of skin from her head. This will continue to happen very often as long as dogfighting is around. This sport is dangerous because it originated from war, it is a felony offense, and it breeds criminal activity. The first reason that dogfighting is dangerous is that it originated from war. The article “A History of Dogfighting” says that “the genesis of dogfighting as a sport can be traced to a clash of ancient civilizations.” This shows that dogfighting is ancient animal cruelty. If this form of violence was not existing, then dogfighting may not exist as animal torture today. The article “A History Of Dogfighting” also stated that “By the 12th century, the practice of baiting- releasing fighting dogs into the ring with chained bulls and bears- had grown in popularity in England.” This practice was dangerous for the dogs …show more content…
According to the article “‘Dogfighting Fact Sheet”’ “Dogfighting is a felony offense in all 50 states, and it is a felony offense under federal law as well.” Because this cruel sport yields such large profits, penalties associated with simple misdemeanors are much too weak to act as a good deterrent for crime. They are only seen as the cost of crime. The article also states that “The HSUS supports felony charges for spectators of dogfights.” Spectators provide profit and the motivation to continue in the cruel practice of dogfighting. Since dogfights are not largely publicized, spectator must search for the fights themselves. This means that they can notcannot just happen to walk in on a
“Mom! Mom! The dogs got Cody. The dogs got Cody” (Vancouver Sun, 2007). Just a few days after Christmas in 2004, these are the cries that awoke Sheri Fontaine. Fontaine raced from her bed into the living room to find her three-year old son, Cody Fontaine, savaged by the dogs that were staying temporarily in her house. Tragically, young Cody did not survive the attack. A young life taken, a mother’s life ruined. Sadly, this story is not as uncommon as one of violence against people, they exhibit highly stubborn characteristics that make them difficult to control, and such bans have proven to be extremely effective.
This produced a dog with a high prey drive with a medium-sized, stocky build and powerful jaws. Contrary to popular belief, the dogs were originally used in the sport of bull-baiting, where dogs would attack the cattle - not other dogs. Since the sport was executed in a pit, the dogs were dubbed ‘pit bull’ and that name has stuck since. When the sport was banned in 1835, the people who relied on these dogs for an income turned the dogs against each other. Their family friendly reputation changed, “around 1976, when animal-fighting venues were added to the Animal Welfare Act, according to Donald Cleary of the National Canine Research Council. Pits--often trained as combatants--came to be seen as dangerous. Throughout the next two decades, stories about vicious pits mauling innocent children appeared in news outlets across the country” (Tullis 3). Interestingly enough, pit bulls were not always the breed under fire by society. In the 1800’s, bite reports by bloodhounds, which were often used to hunt down escaped slaves, flooded the Northeastern newspapers. After World War ll, there was an increase of bite reports by German Shepherd Dogs, a breed used by the Nazis. Pit bulls are the most recent breed of dog to be misjudged. People began to fear pit bulls, this fear
In the short story The Dog Who Wanted to Die by Colleen Archer the protagonist, David, persecutes and desecrates his neighbor's dog for a long time for no justifiable reason; until one day he undergoes a very dangerous situation and it is saved by the same dog he victimized, Monty. Since David’s father left he has shown to be a troubled kid, on the matters of being desensitized and careless. As The Claphams had just moved in with an obese and sorrowful dog, the timing made it perfect for David to excruciate the hopeless dog. The day after David’s father left “he picked up a stone and raised his arm. Then David, who had never deliberately hurt a living thing before, bounced the stone right off the fat dog’s head”. Explicitly, it is atypical for someone who never hurt a living thing to stone a dog’s head, certainly David has some anger issues given the whole situation.
In 18 August, 2011, the source of this event is from Herald Sun. A four-year-old lovely child named Ayen Chol was mauled and killed by a pit bull cross while she was playing in her home. The vicious pit bull escaped from a neighbour’s yard and mauled Ayen in a sudden attack. The dog rushed inside the house and set upon Ayen and some other children who were watching television. Ayen’s mom tried to beat the dog away from the children with a table, but she failed. Then the dog turned on Ayen and the vicious injuries caused Ayen’s death. Dr Cam Day, who is the RSPCA’s Queensland pit bull expert, has claimed that American pit bull terriers are ‘head, shoulder, feet and everything else above other breeds’ in terms of their capacity to injure and maim. If the government doesn’t ban pit bulls, these tragedies would continue to happen and children’s lives would be threatened all the
Pit Bulls are without a doubt my favorite dog, I adore them. Pit Bulls are very well tempered, loyal, and resilient animals. Bred for big game hunting, Pit Bulls are strong, fierce animals and people who have the wrong intentions for ownership should never own them. I am a strong believer that a potential pet owner should do lots of research before getting any type of animal, without exception. Owners should do as much research before getting a dog as they do in planning for a new home or any other new family member. One of the main things to really think about and understand is your intentions for your selection of an animal with the breeding of the Pit Bull. If you choose a dog with the wrong intentions, specifically a Pit Bull, you will get a dog that behaves aggressively and is dangerous. This owner behavior is what has caused the current plight of the Pit Bull today, where laws have been passed in thirteen states and hundreds of municipalities, as well as every U. S. Military base, banning the ownership of the breed and forcing shelters to euphonize Pit Bulls within 24 hours. These laws are unjust and cruel, and victimize the breed based on the owners’ behavior. I also argue that the blame for the epidemic proportions that the laws have reached is 100% the fault of owners who purposely acquired the Pit Bull with the intention to abuse and fight the dogs, and that these owners are the ones who should be punished, not the dogs. By using dogs, the Nazi soldiers reinforced their ideas that Jewish women were sexual deviants and were part of a sub human race. To the victims, this kind of violence was especially degrading as the officers would laugh and taunt them while the dogs were biting them among other things. This is just another example of how women’s experiences of violence were gendered, in that, the sexual violence was specifically enacted against them in this way due to the Nazi rhetoric surrounding Jewish women and how acts of violence against them are meant to demean their femininity.
If you were judged solely because of your race, how would you feel? The answer, most likely, is a negative one. Pit bulls, a breed of domestic dog, are victims of harsh stereotyping and unfair judgement. Many people believe the dog is naturally aggressive, but that is far from the truth. The breed does not matter, the size does not matter, and the age does not matter. The key factor on how a dog behaves, is, believe it or not, the person who raises it. Pit bulls are not a dangerous breed of dog.
In the latest years, greyhound racing has gained negative media attention, whereas in 2015 the abc four corners revealed that several owners and trainers were using live baits as a training form for the dog to gain a competitive advantage (Hanna, & Clark, 2015). Another issue concerning the sustainability of the industry is the mass greyhound killings because they were considered too slow (Hanrahan, 2016). Due to all the issues concerning the industry, New South Wales were set to ban Greyhound racing in 2016. Nevertheless, the ban got overturned due to political populism and the economic benefits and the numerous livings the sport provides for. The government now searches for other solutions to make the industry more sustainable. Still, frustrated
Contrary to that popular belief, dangerous animal behavior is the function of inherently dangerous dog owners, not inherently dangerous dogs. One fact that supports this is that pit bulls are the dogs most often shot during drug raids (TELLINGS v. Toledo). Besides the pit bulls that are owned by drug dealers for status symbols and protection, many pit bulls are owned by people that breed them for fighting. These poor dogs have a very slim chance of living a normal and happy life. This is not the fault of the dog, but the fault of the owners that should not have the dog, or should care for them better.
Imagine your a little child sitting on your driveway, and then a pit bull comes up and attacks you. You have to go to the hospital, doesn't sound fun for an eight year old, does it? A lot of people think that pit bulls should be banned for that reason, they are dangerous. A lot of people also think that pit bulls are important too, and they shouldn't be banned. A ban on pit bulls is the best way to keep people safe.
Between the years of 1979 and 1998, there were several fatalities related to dog bites. The top 3 dogs related to these deaths are the Pit Bull, the Rottweiler, and the German shepherd. These numbers have increased over the years at an alarming rate. Why is it that these dogs are considered the most dangerous dog breeds? Some say it is the breed itself, born with a mean trait already wired into them. Animals, like people, are all born differently. Some people are born nice and others are born mean. Difference in personality is the same when it comes to animals. Every living thing has a unique personality. A lot of times, the personality of the dog has nothing to do with the breed of dog. One cannot determine what personality their child will have, therefore it would be pointless to determine what personality a pet would have (Pet-Owner Liability). Just because one Pit Bull is mean, that does not mean all Pit Bulls are mean. It is also important to take into consideration the size of the dog. It is easy to see that the top dangerous dogs are all large when it comes to size. Cesar Millan, also known as The Dog Whisp...
If one wants to live a more responsible, more active, and a healthier life style they should get a dog. Obtaining the previously mentioned qualities are great but gaining a best friend is even better. Dogs are intelligent animals and their personalities are one of a kind. With training, love, and patience any dog can become a great addition to one’s family. Adoption from an animal shelter is a great way to get a dog although there are adoption fees most of the money is being used to vaccinate the dog before its taken to its forever home. Buying a dog from a reputable breeder is another option as how one gets a dog. Reputable breeders usually guarantee a puppy’s health. One might have to go through a few more hoops to be able to buy a dog from
They say that a dog is a man’s best fried, but they don’t tell you about the overall cost, responsibility, or convenience about adopting one. Dogs are supposed to bring so much joy to a household, but sometimes they can only fill a void for a short amount of time. When a dog owner buys a dog, do they actually research the things that they are about to get in to? When I bought my dog, Skye, I never really looked into is issues; I just looked at the benefits. I love Skye to death, and I guess I could say that she also loves me to death. Even though someone rescuing a dog may think they are doing something great; they are causing an issue on how they will forever live their life.

During this festival, one will witness the disturbing scenes at the Dongkou Market where dogs are burned and skinned alive. Looking through the conflict theory lens, the main clash is between the Yulin locals and animal activists. Undoubtedly, such a cruel practice is frowned upon by many but the locals are set on celebrating this festival
