Dog Breeding Domestication of dogs has been around for 15,000 years (Staub) and man’s best friend seems to be taking new forms all of the time as a result of breeding. The basic definition of dog breeding, according to Wikipedia, is “the practice of mating selected dogs with the intent to maintain or produce specific qualities and characteristics.” However, this practice can be carried out in many different ways, whether they’re successful or harmful methods. Inbreeding is when breeders mate two dogs that are very similar in order to eliminate the flaws of one breed (“Pros and Cons”), and likewise there’s selective breeding which has the same intentions but is not necessarily breeding similar dogs (Selective). Dog breeding can be beneficial by creating puppies that are suitable for any family, job, or living condition. Unfortunately, it can be harmful as well. Many purebreds inherit fatal diseases, cancer, and disorders (Welton). Also, there is already a surplus of homeless and unwanted dogs in the world, and breeding only creates more pups that may live a tortured life (Breeding). Owners who had success with their first dog might decide they want to mate it with another dog to continue the bloodline of their first beloved dog (Breeding.). In this way dog breeding is helping continue the happy relationship between the owners and pets. A similar way dog breeding does this is when someone buys a purebred that fits well in their life and they create a strong bond with the dog, the owner will know the exact breed and be able to buy it again.
