As oceans rise and glaciers melt, the inhabitants of Earth are left searching for reasons and solutions, but things have yet to be done because world leaders continue to point fingers, insisting they are not to blame. However, the debate should be shifted from who is to blame to who can fix it. Viewing the question of responsibility in this light, it is clear the developed world should take primary responsibility for global climate change, if only because they have the greatest capacity to combat it. Although they do this draining in a manner to be as environmentally friendly as possible, it is still a waste of time and technology. Having built a method called directional drilling, the United States is able to access oil that, 40 years ago, would have required three times as much damage to the planet (Krauthammer). With ample supply of technology, the United States should be leading the world in alternative energy production, but instead attempt to drain the planet, deplete the atmosphere, and destroy the environment. Developing nations, with minimal buffering against these environmental changes, suffer from famine, water loss, drought, and death. With developing nations enduring so many internal complications, assigning them responsibility for the climate change would be cruel to them and no help to the world. Developed nations have the ability to thwart climate change, or to allow the depletion of our environment and loss of humanity. The current situation in African countries will very well be the state of the world once the wheels of civilization slow from loss of natural gas lubricant. Humans will have to start from primitive times, fighting for scarce resources and clamoring up the fragile ladder of authority, only to fall down once again. Once the nations holding hegemony above all others realize they exclusively hold responsibility for society’s fate, life will once again begin turning. Problems will be solved and outlook will be bright. To get over assigning blame and beginning to achieve progress is where the true solutions
