“Hockey is a tough, physical game, and it always should be.”(Lemieux, 2014). Hockey fans and coaches are always debating whether or not to change details of the game. It is always a tough topic, however you will always get people agreeing and disagreeing. Some will even write articles expressing their own opinions. Hockey is a nationwide loved, competitive sport, why change the game? Fighting is a vital part of hockey. Many people think fighting should be banned in the NHL, for a couple of reasons. This is the way hockey has always been played, why try and change it? Despite what fans say there is no shortage of goals, in a average game last year there was 5.32 goals scored. For a decent hockey game that is actually a lot of goals. If we expand the net size, we will see an increase in random shooting. Which takes no strategy and changes everyone's plan on scoring. The game of hockey used to be all about scoring goals, now hockey is about defense. Defense wins games, without good defense it wouldn't matter how many goals were scored. Again, low scoring games are the most intense games. On a side note goalie battles can be very entertaining. From the words of Pekka Rinne, ¨The records, everything in the past, would lose itś meaning.¨ (Rinne, 2015) Plus, if the NHL changes the net size this would mean different offensive and goalie strategy for all teams. That alone can be a game changer, the teams would have to scratch every strategy and start over. Instead of having normal shoots, because of the increase in random shooting, the goalie would get beaten up much more.
