Reasons for drinking is different for everyone and everyone does it whether they 're legal or not, but as soon as you step behind that wheel after a few drinks you 're signing your death certificate, or worse, someone else’s. Alcohol-related traffic deaths in the US were 12,998 in 2007. This is more than three times as many American soldiers who died in combat in the first six years of the Iraq war-according to drugfreeworld.com. I was five when my mother’s parents were killed in a drunk driving accident. I grew up never getting to truly know my grandparents because some asshole was drunk and ran a red light. Not only did he cause the accident but he was the one who got airlifted to the hospital while my grandparents lay dying and waiting for the ambulance to arrive. People may think that I was five so I don 't remember much, but I remember more than I would like. I remember my family being wrecked by the news of their death, I remember them passing around pictures of the crash and hating that god awful yellow car that hit my grandparents, I remember being too scared to go see them at the funeral so I stayed in a kid area. I cry thinking about them and what they must have gone through, I feel hatred that the man who killed my grandparents is still alive while they both died. People are careless and carefree, they don 't think of others when they drink and drive they only convince themselves that they are fine. All the facts and pictures of gruesome drunk driving crashes couldn 't change their mind about it, but something must be done. We can’t allow people to go out and drink so much that they leave and get behind a wheel. People need to understand that if they see someone who is too drunk to drive that they need to stop them. I believe everyone should have a designated driver, and I know it seems lame to be that person, but instead of seeing it as lame see it as being the hero. You and only you can save someone from making a mistake like drinking and driving, don 't let your friend do it and don 't let yourself do it. My mom always tells me “be better than your mother” when she does something I don 't approve of, maybe we all need to be better. Don 't let anyone grow up partly empty because someone they loved has been taken from them. No one deserves to not remember the name of their grandparents because they died too young like I do.
