Mental health is a progressive problem across our nation. The prevalence of behavioral and mental disorders makes their appearance nearly inevitable in all fields of medicine. Consequently, attentiveness to such disorders is essential for providing holistic and effective care. Given my background in neurology and psychology, I am confident that I have great potential to contribute to the OHSU PA Program’s goal to, “Foster the integration of the biological, psychological, and social concepts of health promotion and disease prevention into the clinical practice of graduates.” I intend on achieving this goal by educating patients on their psychological well-being and helping to improve the quality of care provided by my health care team.
Although I also have a strong urological background as well as experience working in a primary care clinic, my exposure to neurology and psychology is both personal and professional. Not only did I obtain a neuroscience degree at one of the nation’s top psychology programs, but I also overcame suffering from depression for several years. My personal and educational experiences have granted me a particular insight that is applicable to providing various forms of care. At the University of Michigan I learned that my seemingly simple disorder was

Being sensitive and empathetic is something I am naturally cognizant of when speaking with patients; however, this quality does not come as easily to some providers. Having experienced lack of sensitivity when being treated in the past, I am eager to help my team members develop empathy in order to provide effective care. Ultimately, my greatest contribution to the OHSU PA class is my experience and knowledge in neuropsychology, which will engender awareness of psychological conditions and promote effective, compassionate and preventative care provided by my classmates and
I was born in a small town of -----------of underdeveloped country of Bangladesh. According to the College of Nurse of Ontario (2006), empathy is one of the five key components of the nurse-client relationship and is one of the most powerful tools. You don’t need to know how your patient feels to be empathetic but letting them know that you are trying to understand is a good start. It can be used to describe a variety of experiences and had been defined by emotional researchers “as the ability to imagine what someone else might be thinking or feeling” (University of California, Berkeley). Having the ability to empathize doesn’t mean you will or that you are willing to help someone in need but it is an important first step towards a compassionate

My interest in pursuing a doctorate degree in counseling psychology has been influenced by a combination of life experiences and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Though the path which has led me to this destination is complex, the journey has provided me with the clarity and insight necessary to understand human behavior from a holistic perspective. As I approach the completion of my masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, I am faced with the unsettling realization that I have more questions than I do answers. This has fueled my innate desire and motivation to continue challenging myself by attaining a doctorate degree from the University of North Texas.
Psychiatric nursing has always been my passion and I am ready to put my experience and leadership skills to use and further my career as a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. The psychiatric population is underserved and one of my goals is to continue working in fields others will not. I have always longed for the increased autonomy and decision making Nurse Practitioners use. Broken systems and burnt out mental health workers are a problem. For example, calling an on call physician in a patient crisis only to be given an order for something that is completely useless by a physician who does not care, has always bothered me. I look up to the Nurse Practitioners at work and have always noticed their kind, caring and responsive nature. I want
The mental health assessment is a crucial part in everyday nursing care as it evaluates an individual’s mental condition to assess for risk factors of mental illnesses and provide optimal care and treatment. Mental health is described as “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.” (CDC) If the patient not mentally healthy, they can develop mentally illnesses, which can affect treatment and the disease process of physical ailments because without mental health a person cannot be completely healthy. “Suicide Risk Assessment in High Risk Adolescents” is a nursing article that outlines suicide risk factors and prevention strategies for assist nurses in performing mental health assessments. Suicide, the act of
Mental health is just as important as physical health in a person’s life. Mental health is critical to a person’s well-being, their ability to live a productive life and to keep a healthy family and interpersonal relationships. Mental health does not just affect the mind it also affects people’s physical health. Some physical health diseases can cause a mental health disorder and vice versa. Mental health disorders are associated with the occurrence, development, and outcome of some of the today’s most chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. When people go untreated from a mental health disorder are at a higher risk for many unhealthy behaviors such as alcohol and drug use, violent behavior, and suicide.
From a young age, I was drawn to the healthcare field, not because the amount of money doctors, nurses and other health professionals made, but because of the dedication and contentment I saw on their faces helping someone in need. Growing up everyone wanted to become a doctor or a nurse and as a little child being a doctor or a nurse was a profession many parents wanted their child to pursue as a career. Needless to say, I fell into that category because I had high hopes that one day I will become a nurse. However, that dream came to a halt.
I am writing this letter because I am highly motivated to do the Health Psychology master’s program and I want to be considered as a candidate. I have a Bachelor’s Degree of Psychology from Budapest, Hungary with the highest grade 5. My qualification has already been sent to UK NARIC and the Statement of Compability will arrive to you shortly at the beginning of September. I am applying for this course because I have always wanted to be a psychologist and the Cardiff Metropolitan University can provide my next step to do so.

Patient’s emotions can be a 2-sided sword when delivering patient centered care. Addressing their concern and anxiety can enhance patient compliance with treatment, rapport between the therapist the patient, as well as achieving patient’s desired outcomes. In order to address their concern, we need to develop empathy. Instead of giving pure suggestions or evidences, therapist should link up their instructions and education with patient’s real-life situation. For example, giving the prognosis and estimated period of recovery could Mr. A to plan for his upcoming soccer match.
To work for the United Nations and World Health Organization, that is my long-term goal. I am determined to have a career in which I can dedicate my efforts in promoting better quality of health in developing countries through global health policy. By training in global health at the University of Washington, I hope to enrich my experience in public health and acquire essential skills and knowledge that will enable me to work effectively to bring to pass long-term public health policy and strategies that will address important issues in developing countries such as child health and immunization. Although my undergraduate study focused not on public health but biology, the knowledge I acquired will enable me to have a better understanding on
I have been restlessly questioning if our team has done everything possible to produce a long-lasting outcome for our patient population. I have been making many positive impacts on individual levels but how can I expand my spheres of influences to a population level? I find this question is intellectually challenging and pursuing the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) will be the pragmatic solution. As PMHNP, I will be equipped to bring a more holistic approach to prove the best comprehensive care rather than addressing a " current primary complaint" of a more complex problem. On a personal and professional level, I fiercely believed that mental illness and addiction are family's disease. One suffers, the rest suffer and I am motivated to cultivate a better understanding of mental health and to embrace a culture of kindness and empathy for those who suffer and their loved ones. The autonomy, prescriptive authority, diagnostic ability and psychotherapy skills that I gain from Maryville's Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner program will empower me to bring compassion and empathy back to the art of
My personal health has been something I constantly think about. Whether it’s myself, my parents, my doctor, or others that bring it up, I’m reminded that I need to eat healthier or exercise more, etc. I know that I need to get better about what I eat and try to work more exercise into my daily routine, I just find it hard to find the motivation to go and actually accomplish what I know that I need to do. Especially in today’s society where we’re surrounded by a lot of non-healthy food, and getting access to healthy food is more expensive than the latter, it’s hard to make the better choice and choose the healthy option. I’m hoping now that I’m in college that I’m able to get better at taking care of myself than I have in the past.
