Embark on the road to success As human beings we all learn from our trials and tribulations growing up. Weather small or big obstacles, we learn life lessons such as dedication, growth, patience. For me the biggest challenge, in my life, happened to be education. “Believe it took me a day. Then, aloud, I read back, to myself, everything I’d written on the tablet. Over and over, aloud, to myself, I read my own handwriting”. Malcom x had a difficult understanding , he read his work numerous times, this quote speaks to me, I had a difficult time in high school, always having to put more time in my studies then other students. It took so much dedication and effort just to catch up. One of my favorite quotes that reminded me of dedication is by Malcom x stating “When I had progressed to really serious reading, every night at about ten P.M. I …show more content…
I truly learned how important the people you surround yourself with are. I connected with people who to share the same passion and dedication as me. Sacrificing our weekends to study for finals seemed like the normal …show more content…
When Malcom x was in prison he had no choice to use his time to his advantage, years of prison taught him patience, I can relate to Malcom x and Fredrick Douglas being in high school and failing numerous times could of affected me in a negative way, but pushing out of that and took growth took patience took dedication just how when The masters wife, turned on Fredrick and did not want to continue educating him, this was a road block for him, I came across many of these in high school, instead of getting frustrated I became patient and looked for other ways out, just like Fredrick and
In “Literacy behind Bars” narrative from an autobiography by Malcolm X in 1965, Malcolm X shows that being able to read is important and sometimes jail is the best place to learn. The author supports this by showing that he saw the people around him reading and wanted to be able to speak and read as well as them (640). He started out by reading and writing an entire dictionary which helped him read and understand more words (641). Malcolm X read everything that he could get his hands on and was able to learn more and use it later on in his career. He was able to concentrate more about learning in jail then he would have been able to do at a college because he had nothing else to do. Malcolm X would read late into the morning despite that guard
This was probably the result of the amount of time I them had free and nothing with which to fill it. I developed a love for books similar to that of Malcolm X’s, as well as very similar reading habits to his. Malcolm X says that he spent more time reading in his room than he did in the library. This was certainly the case for me. I spent very little time in the library, preferring to read in places where I felt more comfortable. My room was my favorite place to read because of its peaceful familiarity, but I also tried to read wherever I could; be it the school hallway, in the classroom, on the bus, or outside on the grass.
In his article, Malcolm describes the way he spent seven years in prison and uses his time to give himself an education. He gets a dictionary and starts to read it over and over to study the words
Malcolm X didn’t have it easy. Being in prison means there wasn’t a whole lot of opportunities to do much. While he was in prison he tried to not fall into the crowd the kind of assembly where individuals of men or a group of men would want. It is where men try and act tough to be someone whom people follow while in prison. That’s why Malcolm turned into becoming someone better than the rest of the men who were in prison as
Going into prison Malcolm X had no ability to read and write. He grew up on the streets as a hustler before getting arrested for larceny and breaking and entering. While in prison, X taught himself to read and write by copying the dictionary front to back. X then went on to be a political rights leader who fought a corrupt government with black power. X sees the theft in the government system and how it is unfair to most minority communities. Seeing this theft in the system gives him the idea to do the same against the government. He uses the knowledge that belongs to the government and uses them to fuel his own causes. To start his battle on government corruption he writes his Autobiography and the essay “Learning to Read” is a section of it. This essay describes how he turns the white man’s oppression into life’s biggest opportunity to him. In this paper, I
Malcom X in my perspective is a person who shows great determination and perseverance because although he was incarcerated, he found the need to educate himself. Society expects inmates to come out the same way they went in, and not be productive citizens. Aside from being incarcerated, Malcom X lived in a time period when African Americans weren’t seen as the most intellectual race group by the nation and he overcame that by making his time in prison useful. It comes to demonstrate that if you truly want to improve your well-being you have to be the one willing to invest yourself. In his essay Malcom X states, “In fact, up to then, I never had been truly free in my life,” (para.9), giving us the understanding that being literate gives you a sense of accomplishment and changes you as a person. Learning to read and write is extremely important in our culture because without it we don’t progress as fast, or as much, like others do. Reading and writing is critical because we get to comprehend more of what is going on in our surroundings and engage in society to help improve others aside from ourselves and the community. Malcom X’s experience teaches us that being literate is power. It is the power to do something beyond of what we think we are capable of doing. It is the power to not let your faith be in the hands of
“Available on the prison library 's shelves were books on just about every general subject. Much of the big private collection that Parkhurst had willed to the prison was still in crates and boxes in the back of the library -- thousands of old books”(X). This library was important in the rebirth of Malcolm because he had access to an immense amount of literature which kept him reading and as a result rehabilitating himself. Malcolm was able to get on his hands on a dictionary and quickly became engaged and fascinated. Malcolm considered the dictionary a “miniature encyclopedia” and began to copy the dictionary page by page, proving his determination and work ethic. Malcolm was always learning inside prison, if Malcolm was on the streets he would continue to be hustling instead of diving into
However, once Malcom X became more advanced in education, Malcolm became more capable of communicating with other human-beings. “Learning To Read” is an excellent example of the necessity of education. Whether the person believes it or not, education is a must in today’s society for growth and prosperity. If education is not a part of a childs life, then the person life will not be the same as the person whom is educated, if education is not a part of a childs life, then the children will track on the equivalent path of ancestors, and if education is not a part of a childs life, then todays society will start to either; plateau, or steadily fail. In the short story “I Just Wanna Be Average” by Mike Rose, many struggles came about with Mikes teachers putting him down telling him “you will not succeed.” the schooling part of learning subjects, and by his peers constantly putting him down. Mike Rose was told he was just average by his teacher, however, Mike proves to his teacher that he is anything but average. Education should be necessary to all people of every particular society, traditional or untraditional. The proper education is extremely necessary for any human-being to function
Though I had some strong points in my informative speech, I still feel there was a lot I could improve upon. I could not recognize any vocalized pauses but I noticed that at certain points of speech where I would transition from one point to another, I would push my glasses up. I don’t remember if this was because my glasses were actually slipping down or because I was nervous. Also, after watching my video, I found that in the beginning of the speech I was swaying a lot, but because I was standing behind the table it wasn’t that noticeable. The one major thing I would change is my choice to stand behind the table. It was something I did unconsciously and out of habit of usually speaking behind a podium, and I did not notice I did it until
In “Learning To Read” by Malcolm X he had talked about his time in prison and how he devoted his time there to work on his vocabulary and his penmanship.
In "Prison Studies" Malcolm X briefly details how, during his incarceration, he embarked on a process of self-education that forever changed him and the course of his life. Malcolm writes of his determination to learn to read and write, born out of his envy and emulation of Bimbi, a fellow prisoner. His innate curiosity, sense of pride, and ambition to learn and be someone of substance motivated him to study relentlessly. As he learned more about the world he developed a great thirst for knowledge that left him with a lifelong desire that only his continued studies could satisfy. He believed that prison offered him the best possible situation in which to educate himself.
In life we all face obstacles. The troubles that we face don’t define us, how we overcome the situation is what makes us the people we are today. Throughout my life I have faced many trials and tribulations that I had to overcome with the help of my mother, ofcourse. I was smooth sailing in life until I started high school.
The African American activist, writer and lecturer, Malcolm X, claimed that intense independent learning in isolation is far more effective than to attend college where there are more distractions that interfere with studying. Malcolm X defines his views on the basis of his own challenges and victories in overcoming his illiteracy in prison and the facts in history that show how the formally educated White man can still act in ignorance and blindness towards other races. The purpose of his essay is to inform individuals that they have the power to change themselves in order to overcome obstacles in life that try to stop them from realizing and living their dreams. Malcolm X's essay speaks to African Americans who do not realize their full potential and to college students who may want to reconsider their means of getting an education.
Self-awareness is not about reading a book or attending a course. Self-awareness is a journey, and it takes practice. It’s like a muscle that becomes more effective with time and effort. It gives us mental strength as opposed to physical strength. We are constantly changing and adapting to the multiple external forces around us and to our individual experiences. The more we learn to be aware of, and understand, our reactions, thoughts, and emotions, while also keeping in mind our values, the more we can become the best we can be and the more successful we can become.
Over the course of the semester, I have learned a few things about myself. I have learned that I can be independent, I always knew myself as someone who could do mostly everything on their own. This semester really made me realize how independent I could actually be. Not only have I learned how independent I am I have also realized the importance of time management. With not having a strict class schedule it was a lot different than what I was originally used to. After a few weeks, I learned ways that would work best for me, for example writing down that I needed to get done. I learned that I need to focus on what 's ahead of me to accomplish what I want to succeed in, to manage what needs to be done ahead of time to stay caught up.
