Debbie Schwenk October 6, 2015 What Has Influenced Me? The journey that has brought me to this place of applying to Colorado Christian University has been filled with many events and as many experiences that have inspired me to this point. Obviously, I cannot pick all of them or I would be writing my autobiography and not an essay. So I will pick just a couple main experiences that have deepened my desire to become a nurse and I believe will continue to influence me to strive for excellence in my schooling and career. The experiences of having six children, raising six children, and caring for my mother during the last three years of her life were ultimately the ones that inspire me. They are the reasons that will always keep me focused and …show more content…
Not only were they knowledgeable in procedures, equipment, and what was going on, more importantly they were full of compassion and a desire to make the experience the most rewarding and safe for me and baby as possible. Their excellence was inspiring. When delivering babies, there is one outcome desired; yet several ways to get there. Some of the ways to get there could definitely end in a bad outcome if the nurses were not well trained and prepared to handle whatever could come their way. It was after the fact, after my babies were born, after I was elated with a precious new life in my arms that I contemplated the role of those nurses. The professionalism of the nurses was an after- thought but definitely not a forgotten thought. They made a lasting impression on my heart and I knew that was what I wanted to do for others. Birth is a transition of life for the mom, the dad, the baby and all of the extended family as well and I would consider it an incredible honor to be part of that transition with expertise in that field. On the opposite spectrum of life, were the experiences that also influenced …show more content…
Each one of those disciplines have had education and training that provide many people including my mom a chance for healing, recovery, and dignity in death. They inspired me! Once again, these people, in each of their own professions, used the training and education they received along with their personal desires to care to influence my passion for becoming not just a nurse but an excellent nurse. Along the way of my education thus far, a desire for excellence has never left me. There was so much information crammed in such a short amount of time, my concern was always that I just didn’t want to learn enough to pass the test but to learn all that I needed to know to be a “great nurse”. I know that there are many facets to being a great nurse, including the education and training but also something that comes from deep within that can’t necessarily be taught. Passion, compassion, sympathy, and empathy are just a
Nursing had not initially been a career option for me, but nursing had made an impact on my life, even at an early age. There was a picture frame that sat on my mother’s dresser with an image of her in her student nurse uniform. It was very formal, and she wore a blue cape with red satin lining. This image gave me my first impression of nursing. Helping my mother with the laundry, bleaching the white uniforms and starching the stiff white cap banded with a thin black velvet ribbon was another activity I associated with nursing. In 1979, my mother was sent to Hershey Medical Center for training to become the first certified Enterostomal Therapist in the state of Virginia. It was at that point that I realized that nursing was a profession, with unique career goals, education and training that was
Becoming a nurse is probably my most noteworthy achievement. Neither of my parents or any family member have ever been to college. My family was never in the best life circumstances of me leaving for college. Yet, I was privileged enough to be able to put myself through school financially, by working various jobs. Being able to achieve my Bachelor's degree from an accredited school is a great achievement I am proud of. Becoming a nurse was the easy part though, the relationships that developed through my experiences have become my most meaningful and difficult achievements. Day in and day out I see people at their worst. People are stressed, hurt and afraid. I love being able to give them strength, hope and compassion. This relationship works both ways though. Patients', their families and their lives have taught me so much. The experiences nursing has given have become my most meaningful achievements. My goal to pursue advanced practice nursing will only further these achievements. I hope to encourage people more, teaching them how to take control of their lives in whatever way they see fit. I know I cannot teach passion, but I hope to inspire people by having them witness the passion that I have, passion that I have acquired by watching patients and their experiences. I fully anticipate to keep giving my gift to wherever the
I want to help others and give back to my community as a nurse. Obtaining a BS in nursing is a critical step towards making my dreams a reality. I plan to further my education and get a Masters in Nursing, so that I may serve as a Nurse Practitioner to low income families. While doctors treat the disease, nurses care for the individual as a whole, and that is what attracted me to the profession. Life is a precious gift, and by becoming a nurse not only can I contribute to improving the health and safety of a patient, but I can also help make their stay in the hospital a comfortable one. As a nurse I will have to be careful, kind, patient, alert, and a critical thinker just to name a few; but I am ready for these tasks and more. I am being prepared to be the nurse that will have a positive impact in the life of every patient that I encounter while providing optimum care. I also anticipate the impact that others will be able to have in my life. Seeing the strength and optimism of a very ill patient, hearing the stories of people’s lives, witnessing the ill become well, and knowing that I made a difference even if it is merely putting a smile on someone’s face will make my journey worthwhile. Nursing gives me the opportunity to provide families with excellent and compassionate care- the kind of care that some of my family members have received and the kind of care that I would like
The idea of a being a nurse has always been a driving force in my life. Throughout my Licensed Vocational Nursing Program I had my first encounters with sick people and the hospital setting. Observing my mentors I witnessed the difference they made in peoples lives. In my Registered Nursing Program I had the privilege of doing clinical rotations at The Veteran Affairs Hospital in Fresno, California. It was here that it was most profound that nurses not only heal the physical ailments of a patient but also those of the mind and spirit. I looked forward to spending time with the patients and listening to their histories while providing care. Through these experiences grew my personal philosophy of nursing. Nursing
My interest in nursing is fairly new; I had not explored the potential that a nursing career can offer. I became familiar with nursing professionally after becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant. While working with patients, side-by-side with nurses I became enamored with the potential of a nursing career. I now have a rewarding career working as a Medical-Surgical nurse on a Medical University Hospital floor that specializes in Transplant, Nephrology and Urology. Nursing encompasses the ideologies that fuel my passion, upon further research, and conversation with coworkers I realize my career goal of Family Nurse Practitioner; affording me the privilege to care for others by reaching out to various
My road to nursing was not the typical route one might take to get here. I’ve always had a big heart and an empathetic and caring personality, I’ve always looked out for the “little guy” or gave help to anyone in need. It wasn’t until my early twenties that I realized this was a gift and that I could use this gift to not only to make a career but also to help other people in times of need, which I believe to be the greatest fulfillment one can achieve.
At the age of eighteen, the tension at home was unbearable with my step mother and I moved out seeking independence and a career in nursing. The two tools I had were motivation and intelligence. By this time, I was determined to become a nurse and advance my career, no matter how long the journey takes. After careful consideration, I chose a ladder approach beca...
During the summer of 2006, my mother, older sister, and I went overseas to Lebanon. I never appreciated being raised in America until that visit. War with Israel broke out in South Lebanon in the midst of our vacation. My experiences while having to evacuate the country altered my aspect of my life in America.
I have always known that I wanted to help people and make an impact on other’s lives since I was young, but it took some time to realize that nursing was how I wanted to fulfill that passion. My dream to become a nurse came about during my last year and a half of college, which I can also say has been the most significant time period in my life so far. The first few years of college before this turning point reflects me as someone who was confused and in search of a purpose.
As a child, my life-long dream was to become a nurse. Although, distractions may have caused a delay along the way, eventually redirection corrected the pathway for the achievement of this dream, which was an Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) degree, nearly twelve years ago. At that time, this was an acceptable goal, however with the ever changing healthcare field, I was wrong. Education, not only in life, but in the nursing field is ongoing and necessary to keep up with these changes. When locating articles for research papers during attendance at Jacksonville University (JU), I stumbled upon this quote: Let us never consider ourselves finished nurses....we must be learning all of our lives -- Florence Nightingale. So, while attending JU I adopted this as my motto, I have learned so much during my time at JU. By creating this portfolio and completing the course objectives of JU, I realized I am not just completing my Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (BSN), but starting an endless journey in the nursing profession which will ultimately allow me to continue to provide efficient, safe, quality care to patients, while becoming a leader and mentor to other nurses utilizing evidence based research and technology.
Reflection on Nursing Philosophy In less than one week, at the age of 49, I will complete my Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing-living proof that hard work and determination pays off! Like so many of my fellow nursing students at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), anxiety and excitement fills my heart and mind as we venture off in new directions. Some new graduates will begin their first nursing job, while more seasoned nurses like myself will launch into new job opportunities, or advance our role in our nursing to the next level. The journey has been filled with joy, sacrifices, and challenges.
Although I am only sixteen years old and in the eleventh grade of high school, many things have influenced me and caused me to be the person that I am today. I hope that these things will continue to help me be a better person and influence me as my life continues. Some of the things that have influenced me have been church, my family, my friends, and school.
Throughout my education, I proved that I am a hard working student that will never give up. My ambition of becoming a nurse, pushed me even harder to reach my goal. With all my hard work I have acquired a passion for learning. Educating myself has enhanced my desire of becoming a nurse. From learning all the human anatomy to learning the biology of life, this showed me that my hard working skills have prepared me for the nursing practice and for the nursing
In my life I have had many major impacts in my life that motivated me towards what I should do in life. They have been caused by certain individuals, certain events, and certain educational experiences. However, one certain educational experience that motivated me the most, towards what I want to become, a Dentist, are my high school science classes specifically my Physics, Biology, Advanced Biology, and Chemistry classes. These classes impacted my life by showing what I am good at, which career I would most likely want to go into, and also how going into that certain career would help me benefit myself and the public.
Nursing, for me, is more than a profession, it is a journey where I learn continuously about life changing events and miracles. Touching the lives of others or being touched by other’s story is an experience one can’t describe, only endure. Nursing is a profession of integrity and compassion, and it is the most trusted professions due to our commitment towards our patient. The quality of a good nurse is they should be caring, sensitive, kind and respectful towards their patient, and I believe I possess all these qualities that have contributed to me in my successful career of nursing. Working at Cleveland Clinic, I got a great opportunity to work with a group of doctors and coworkers who have the same mission in life and job as mine; “Put the patient first”. Making a positive impact on patient’s life, big or small, noticed or unnoticed, gives me a great sense of accomplishment and makes me proud to be a nurse.
