The South Merced Flea Market

One of my favorite experiences that I have had since I moved to Merced is The South Merced Flea Market, or as I like to call it, "the remate". It's an amazing experience. Its taken place at an abandoned lot that gets rented out every Saturday, to anyone who would like to sell their produce, hand made items, used things, brand new items and other random things that you only see there. There are so many different people. Everyone is in their own world. Selling, buying, people watching, tasting different foods and just spending time with their families. I love it!

So you park your car on the dirt parking spaces and walk up to the entrance. Its only fifty cents to enter the flea market. Which is a great deal. Once you walk in, to the left there are food vendors. They sell raspados, which is basically shaved ice with pureed fruit on top. They also sell corn on the cob with cheese, mayonnaise, lemon, and spicy chile powder. The outer aisles are filled with vendors that sell clothing, cell phones, accessories, jewelry, shoes, toys and so many random things. There is a section for antiques. They have collectibles, furniture, vintage clothing and many different home decor items. Towards the back of the market are all the used items. They sell used bicycles, used furniture, pots, pans, anything used. Kind of like an outdoor thrift store for a bargained price. As you are walking through these areas the vendors yell out, "for sale, for sale, we sell this, we sell that, come in and see our items!". They yell these things out in Spanish and of course they name the specific things they are selling. So they grab a lot of people's attention and that's what gets people to come into their space to buy things or check out what they're
