On Thursday night during the high school boys basketball game, the seven deadly sins--lust, greed, sloth, gluttony, pride, wrath and envy--were all committed. In total 265 instances were performed. Joshua Cranston, a tuba player for the school's pep band, already having inhaled a Reese's peanut butter cup, a Kit Kat and two bags of popcorn was performing the act of gluttony. In the process of starting his third bag, Joshua’s popcorn was hit out of his hands by the wrathful parents of Thomas Erikson, who were screaming “Open your eyes ref!” and “He didn’t even touch him!” after their son received his second foul. This led Andrew Carson and his brother Zack to make a bet on whether or not Thomas’ father would get kicked out of the gym for yelling at the refs again, enacting the sin of Greed. “‘l’ll bet you twenty bucks Mr Erickson will be forced the leave before the end of the game!” Andrew suggested “No way! With all the racket he's making, five minutes max!” Zack insisted. Andrew and Zack were also exhibiting the sin of sloth by forcing their little brother to go to the concessions stand for them while they eyed the scantily clad cheerleaders. “My son’s going to bring the team to the state championships this year”, insisted Thomas’ mother, Marla Erikson openly committing the act of pride. “ He has made well over half of …show more content…
the team's points tonight.” This exaggeration brought on the sin of envy from the parents of the team benchwarmer. “Ugh why won’t they put Michael in?” said Michael's mother to her husband, to which he responded “I know. I’d just love for him to go in and show up Thomas, and wipe that smile right off that woman's face” both of them envious of the Erickson family. “ I don't get why she thinks she is better than anyone else, Thomas isn't even that good at basketball.” All the while, Bridget Jones, Thomas’ girlfriend, couldn’t take her eyes off the other team’s point guard Jacob Evans. She couldn't help but notice Evans running around the court showing off his tricks and beating the defense. Bridget was known was the world's biggest tease when it came to boys. With a flirty smirk and a finger twirling in her hair, it was no secret that Bridget wanted Jacobs’s attention. Meanwhile, Bridget’s best friend Selena Rodriguez was lusting over Thomas. Selena couldn't help but whisper “He's so dreamy” quietly under her breath, it surprised her when Bridget said “He sure is” back to her, though Selena noticed that Bridget wasn’t looking at her boyfriend, but at the bench where Jacob currently was sitting. While resting on the bench, Jacob couldn't help but smile with satisfaction for all the hard work he has done. As he looked up at the crowd he noticed his enemy’s girlfriend was staring right at him, and next to her was his favorite cousin Selena. She paid no attention to her surrounding and kept applauding Thomas’s every move.
“Thata way Thomas!” she would yell as he kept making his free throws. She enjoyed watching Thomas, even if she could only adore him from a distance. The man of her dreams was guiding his teammates toward victory. His techniques and strategies toward the competition argued her to be more involved with the game. “Here we go, Thomas!” She hollered when he recovered a loose ball. The game’s intensity was rapidly growing, baskets were being made from both side of the court. With three minutes until halftime, the referees blew the whistle to give Thomas his third
foul. “ You've got to be kidding me!” Shouted Thomas’s father “ What kind of call is that? You call yourself a ref!” Mr. Erikson’s constant shouting was irritating everyone, even the coach. Soon after flipping over Joshua's fourth bag of popcorn a man in a bright blue jacket with the printed letters security entered the gym and made his way toward the loud obnoxious fan. At an instant, Mr. Erikson stomped his way out of the building while being escorted by his familiar companion.
Joes High School’s total enrollment consisted of sixteen girls, and twenty boys. Ten of the boys that had enrolled there played basketball. All of the boys were over six feet tall. Lane Sullivan, the new coach of the basketball team, had never even touched a basketball before he started coaching. Sullivan had never coached anything at all before he started coaching the Joes basketball team. In order to gain knowledge about the sport, he got a book about it. He started coaching in 1927, but before the 1928 basketball season, Joes High School didn’t even have a gym. Instead, they’d practice outside on a dirt court, and two times a week they’d take a bus to the nearest gym, which was ten miles away. In order to play home games, the boys had to play in the local dance hall. The “court” was nowhere near regulation size, and the ceiling was so short that the boys couldn’t shoot an arched shot. The people who attended these basketball games had no place to sit and watch the game, the all stood around the edges of the court and on the small stage. Joes High School finally got their own gym around Christmas time because the people of Joes donated their time and material in order to make it happen.
Andy goes back to school and talks to his basketball coach about how he feels about Rob's death and how his fiends and family feel about the accident. In addition, they discuss Andy's sentence because Andy keeps punishing himself for Rob's death. Everybody at school was crying during Rob's memorial service. Grief Counselors from downtown come to the school to try to get the kids to share their feelings.
The first personal traits that Coach Dale was forced to exhibit were his toughness and his assertiveness. On his first night in Hickory he met the men of town in the barbershop who were all willing to provide their experience and insight on the team and how to coach. Coach Dale had enough self confidence to know that none of these “insights” were going to help the Hickory team win basketball games and let them know they weren’t welcome by turning his back and walking out. Additionally, he was forced to demonstrate his toughness twice more on the first day of practice by telling the temporary coach, “Secondly, your days of coaching are over,” and then by standing up to the group of men after he dismissed Buddy from the team. These actions made no friends of the men; however, th...
For example, when Ichabod leaves town because of the headless horseman and the encounter he has with the “man”. In ¨The Legend of Sleepy Hollow¨, it is clearly illustrated how the 7 deadly sins (pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, and sloth) can affect someone. Ichabod Crane had so coveted for another person's possession, he got greedy and ruined his life in pursuit of
Everybody in Detroit called him “The Man” because he always was a leader and the to-go person in any tough moment of the game. Some people called him “The Gentleman” because he was a genuinely nice person with respect for the game and for others. Joe Dumars, a member of the legendary 1989-1990 Detroit Pistons team, once declared “He is the best player I’ve seen coming into the league for years”. Road to history was wide open for Grant, but luck had some other plans for his career. This is the story of Grant Hill, a story about having faith, patience and love for the game of basketball.

The seven deadly sins are older than dirt in a sense, and it’s no wonder they can be found in almost every book. However, these books clearly show the deadly sins of pride, greed, lust, and wrath. To Kill A Mockingbird expresses pride through it’s memorable characters. Julius Caesar finds pride in the characters of Antony, Caesar, and Brutus. The Great Gatsby puts lust to shame through Gatsby and the consequences he experiences for having a deadly sin. Night shows how a deadly sin can be in an entire population, not just one single soul. Even though the seven deadly sins are mostly bad, these books also show that even the most innocent of characters can, and probably does consist of at least one deadly sin. Some can have more, and very rarely can a person posses
The seven deadly sins refer to the root desires of human being’s need for more. Each of these sins goes against so called morals. Some of these sins include, wrath, greed, envy, pride, and lust and fornication. Consequently, there are many literary allusions that are thematic examples of the deadly sins; Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, Silas Marner by George Eliot, Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, and The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. All of these books are tied together by adding at least one of the seven deadly sins into the plot.
Boone faces the challenge of being accepted by the community, encouraging them to work together rather than judging and persecuting one another. At that time in Alexandria, Virginia there was an active atmosphere of racial tension within the community between both the African American and Caucasian population. Boone, a black coach, faces the challenge of taking on a new position as head coach of the T.C Williams High School football team. This is fraught with conflict and peril however due to the opposition of those that do not and will not accept the integration of black and white students into mixed race schools. In a move by the school board coach Boone is now unknowingly threatened by the loss of his job if The Titans loose a match. If The Titans are to loose a match Coach Boone will not only loose his job, both himself and the community will loose the hope of ever having this system of integration work. Boone in an effort to be accepted by the community uses his work with the football team to support the system of integration by emphasizing that he is in fact a valued ...
The championship game loss helps the audience, especially young adults with high, aspiring dreams, to understand, that even if you do work-hard and aren’t awarded with winning your goal, this isn’t the end of your journey. It only means you have to work harder in the future, if you want to succeed at your goal. This conclusion shows young children how to lose properly and how to be grateful for what they have, since being good a winning is a much easier task. For like a quote from Colin Powell, “There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.” The under-class, basketball players learned from the mistakes in the title game, so they could go farther and win next year’s championship, because failure should never be your excuse to not attempt something.
seven deadly sins. Almost every Greek myth you hear can be represented by one of the deadly
The emotion is intense. Everyone in the gym is on the edge of his or her seat. Time is expiring as the final shot for the win sails through the air. The buzzer sounds… Athletics are a critical element of high school lives--whether it be playing for or supporting one’s team. In order to accomplish success in a season, these supporting individuals are forced to rely on a select few of premier athletes. From day one of tryouts, these athletes are crafted and molded based on their hard work as well as their ability to play in accordance with the coach’s style. At a varsity level, where victory has his or her job on the line, coaches should not be required to play every member of the team equally.
Summer vacation, and school ends for about three months, and then you have as much fun as you can, then back to school… right? Well I had to go to summer school, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Everything was going fine, I had a job after summer school, and that was going fine as well. They say that summer is supposed to be fun and exciting, and it usually is for me and my family. However in July my father started coughing up blood. My father usually doesn’t make it his top priority to go to the doctors, so he waited about four weeks until he really didn’t feel good.
Down two with six seconds to go fatigue had taken it tolls on the players. With little energy left; over time was not an option. I knew I had to go for the win. I walk on the floor confident of my ability that was until the whistle blew quickly turning my confident to butterflies. As I fought to get open I quickly saw the ball coming my way. As I rose for a jump shot time itself began to stay still. An in flesh everything became silent. As I watch the ball leave my hand I envisioned greatness; sure the ball was on its way in I started to celebrate that was until I hear the announcer say my teammate tip in miss shot to win us the game. Mix with emotion I celebrate with my teammate. “Ok guys, we have 24 hours until tip off. Get some rest because this is going to be the biggest game of your life. Let’s bring this championship back to Barton College. Go Bulldogs and Goodnight!” Why few players stay in the lobby to hang out I took it talk upon to work on my game and reflect on the semifinal game that just took place. At basketball games you will notice how there are all sorts of fans attending the game.
It was dark that night, I was nervous that this dreadful day was going to get worse. Sunday, October 23, 1998 I wanted to start writing this to tell about the weird things i’m starting to see in this new neighborhood. Gradually I keep seeing pots and pans on the sink suddenly move to the floor. I would ask my sister but she is out with my mom and dad getting the Halloween costumes. When they got home I didn’t tell them what I saw because i've seen Halloween movies and I have to have dissimulation otherwise the ghost will come out and get me first. October 24, 1998 I think I got a little nervous yesterday with the whole ghost thing. 12:32pm, Went to eat lunch with the family today and I go to get my coat. I heard the words furious and madness,
