There are many things that have molded me into the person I am today such as being born into a family with four children. With three siblings, I have been forced to be able to work out problems from stealing each other’s toys to having to rush to the emergency room to get stiches because my brother chased me around the house and I tripped. Every school I attended was ephemeral to me since I was changing so often. When I was younger and living in Monterrey I went to a private school during kindergarten, suddenly we moved houses (still in Monterrey) and we had to change to another private school closer to our new house. Later on, during my 4th grade year in school, I was getting many questions from my peers asking me if I was gay or not and even though I wasn’t being bullied it bothered me because I wasn’t ready to answer that question so I asked my mother to change me to another school. After I begged, she moved me to another school for my 5th grade year, but I was only there for that year because the following year I would be moving to Laredo, TX. At the age of 10 I had already been through 4 schools which I believe taught me how to be social and how to make friends quickly. I was able to interview Matheena Syed. I met her husband Khalid Syed, during a previous visit, but unfortunately he had to work during our arranged interview time. Matheena was the sister that I had been in contact with from the very first visit arrangement, she has been my guide through the entire immersion process. Because of this the interview was very casual and open. She was able to share some great information about her culture and integrating her Islamic faith into American society.
The people I interview were my sister Shola who is 18 years old graduate from Kipp College preparatory, another sister Lisa a student who is 16 years old and my dad Antwane who is a mechanic and is 40 years old.These events of inequality in America has made these 3 women be more protected and have their freedom narrowed down a little bit. To my dad it made him worry for his kids and face stereotypes that society has given to black men.
It seems unbelievable my oldest is a few days off being a decade old. I know every parent wonders “where has the time gone?” a multitude of times during their children’s childhoods, but as I realize my son is over halfway to 'adulthood' it seems like the time has flown by.
All the students loved Mr. Duckworth with his round glasses and semi bald head. He always wore a button down shirt with khaki pants. He would often talk about different situations that involved his family that would make us laugh. I loved going to his class and writing different papers. Mr. Duckworth one of the best teachers I have ever had. Every time we would come into his class, his teacher assistant Mr. Allen would be sitting right next to him waiting for our class to come in. they both expressed that our class was the best class that he had. As they sat and talked, and would casually lean back and introduce to us what he wanted done.
Identity-“Ones personal qualities.”Identiy is something only he or she can fully define. My uncle says I am affectionate,cheerful, and calm. My grandmother sees me as slim, pretty and sweet. My dad described me as perky, cheerful and happy, my mom says beautiful, gentle, and self-conscious. These adjectives describe me accurately, yet they are only abstract versions of me. Adjectives cannot begin to describe me and I aknowlege these descriptions for what they are, a condensed translation from my outward self to the world. It is impossible for anyone to understand me completely because nobody has experienced the things I have. My mother has never cherished a raggedy doll named Katie and my father never spent hours upon hours making collages and scrap books for his future children. My uncle never hid in the back of a pick-up-truck and traveled four hours to New York and my grandmother has never walked hours in the rain looking for the Queen of England. My identity is something only I can define.
I was born in Escondido, California on March 10th, 1998 to my amazing parents Dennis and Brandi Shenenberger. My parents have always liked to say that I’ve been difficult even before I was born due to the fact my mother had to be put on long-term bed rest to prevent her from going into pre-term labor. Since I was the oldest child and the second oldest grandchild on both my maternal and paternal side I was undoubtedly spoiled as a child.
But now, I would like to talk with you a little about my daughter, Arlyn Maria Johnson, who was born on Wednesday January 12, 1980 at Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville, the most beautiful little girl I had ever seen.
Dr. D is a cardiothoracic surgeon. He was my hero. He may well still be, even though he is a throw-back to the days when I was more concerned about science than symbolism.
I loved how he gave everyone in our homeroom nicknames, for instance, mine was “Higgy-Baby”. To this day I do not know how he came up with a name like that, but I know that while I was in his classroom, I was never called just Alyssa. While I learned many new and interesting things in his science class, I remember more of the life lessons that he taught during his homeroom. He was one of the teachers that was there for me when life got rough, he looked out for me during and outside of class. For me, knowing that I had him keeping an eye out for me made me feel safer going to school again.
My school experience has helped define me as a person and has helped guide me through life. I attended a public school in Perry, Iowa. There was a small public school in my town, but it only taught through eighth grade, so everyone attended the same high school. During high school I participated in dance team, football and basketball cheerleading, marching band, color guard, concert band, jazz band, pep band, choir, select choir, drama, Resistance Skills Leaders, National Honor Society, GSA, Skills, Big Buddy, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and speech.
