One aspect of reading that I enjoy is getting so wrapped up in the story. When the character's heart pounds, my heart pounds. When they hold their breath, I hold my breath. It feels like I'm there in the story. I get absorbed in the plot and take in every detail. A challenge I have regarding reading is that I tend to stop in the middle of a series if the beginning of the book isn't very interesting. I want to read further, but I end up procrastinating until it gets lost under my bed. I am hoping to improve my reading this year by remembering to look up word I don't know. This will help me to better understand whatever story I am reading. My favorite text from last year was definitely The Book Thief. This compelling novel always kept me on the
edge of my seat. So many things could happen next. When were they going to bomb Munich? Will they find Max? I always find books with mystery and adventure the most exciting. I enjoy being able to discover and use my own style, mostly when I write creatively. One challenge I have with writing is transitioning fluently, specifically between paragraphs. Most of the time, my transitions are awkward and my sentences are choppy. It has gotten better since last year, but this year, I hope to improve in making my writing flow together even better. My favorite writing assignment from last year was writing an alternate ending to the book The Giver. Although I'm not very good at it, I really enjoy creative writing. It's interesting to think about how many ways a story could end, how many ways a problem could be solved, and form that idea into the final conclusion.
Reading was my worst enemy in Middle school. Teachers always assigned us books or articles for research papers. My problem was that I could never get excited about reading the material. I have always been an action kind of person and the boring old history books, teachers assigned us weren’t action packed enough for my taste. So, my solution to the problem was to have my own little taste to the story but still stay on topic. I used descriptive words to make a boring scene sound more exciting. Adding this new taste to books for papers made my reading level sky rocket and made me become a better
A common theme that both these books share is Heroism - real and perceived. For instance, Trudi Montag saved the lives of several Jews by hiding them from the Nazi’s as well as providing them with necessary food and supplies since they had lost everything they once had due to the Nazi’s excuting them one by one. Trudi true showed heroism risking her own life to promote the welfare of others, she knew if the Nazi’s found out she was protecting jews inside her home she could be arrested or worse killed yet she did not hesitate one before taking action. Moreover, Trudi gave everything she had to others whether it be her own personal space, belongings, or food even if she had to struggle harder to keep everything running in her
When I first got out of school, I had time to read. But as I got older the more I worked and the harder it got for me to get into a good book. When I did find a book I could get into I had a hard time with the bigger words, from reading to understanding them. Over time I got a little better at understanding and using the words around them to figure out what they meant. I still have those obstacles, but I am working through them to better my reading.
I’ve always taken after my dad, so it should not have been a surprise when my reading habits took after him too. My whole life I have been able to sit and read for hours on end without disturbance, however as I began to read your book The Book Thief I felt a shift. It wasn't your book per say. It was more like the entrance to a new era. The hours I spent on the fantastical worlds turned into minutes, and the time I spent with my mom became time spent with my father. It just took your book to realize what was truly happening. I was growing up.
I went through most of school reading those boring books that we all know about, and it was a serious struggle for me. When reading something you’re forced to, you don't find it quite enjoying. If you don’t enjoy it, you can forget what you’ve read, not get much out of the book, find it incomprehensible, and so on. Then out of nowhere in my life, I had discovered the first book that I honestly enjoyed. I can’t remember a whole lot about them, but i do remember the feeling of finding the first book I liked. The book was almost life changing it seemed. I would read it many times over and over again! These books, Choose Your Own Adventure series, were full of action and took me places! You directed where the story went, or ended by making choices for the main character. It was different every time you read it! It not only was good for reading, but also helped with being able to comprehend what I was reading, finding the theme of a book, and a lot of reading skills. I was finally an active reader! My reading took off, my attention was captivated, and my reading skills began to really
Everyday someone in this world is being categorized by their looks, actions, behavior, etc. Over the past years I have been categorized in many ways. Due to the way I presented myself and the way I spoke, many others made assumptions of who I was. I was once told “Classy women don’t wear belly shirts, short skirts, or tight clothes”, so people assumed I was “Trashy”. Have you ever heard of “Don’t Judge a Book by its Cover”? People judged me based on what I looked like, and the actions that I made. People didn’t know how I actually was because they didn’t bother to get to know me, they based me off their assumptions and characteristics. I will
How could anybody ever steal from me? Whenever I was young, stealing was introduced to me at church, where we learned that “you shall not steal”. Those values are instilled in me and I assumed everybody had the same values that I have. I was wrong.
I never realized how many previous errors I was making until they were actually brought to my attention. I’ve learned more about how to properly format a paper, how to structure a thesis, and even small things such as the difference between “affect” and “effect.” Reading on the other hand has never been something to interest me. I am a slow reader and feel like I have troubles comprehending some of the information. Which led me to forgetting what I read when it needed to be remembered for a quiz.
Books are a veritable treasure. They can truly be one’s best friends for life and one need never be lonely in the company of books. Reading is such a fascinating habit that the deeper you delve into it, the more you are drawn to it. Not only do books provide entertainment and knowledge, but they also sharpen the intellect, stimulate imagination and enhance vocabulary. Once a reader, always a reader and voracious readers always stand apart and distinguish themselves from the others in all walks of life.
For example, as one reads he is to understand and comprehend what the author has written, transfer the words on the page to images in the head, analyze the situation within the novel, and then reflect on his own opinions received from the reading. Because of the immense amount of mental effort it takes to read, it is important that the brain is trained and continues to learn more words that help reading comprehension. Young people who read “TMZ” as opposed to literature were nearly “two times less likely to be above average readers.” This is because reading literature provides the opportunity to “deep read” and stimulates the imaginative side of the brain. Continuous reading also introduces the reader to different styles of
My local library was the first place I got to experience peace and quiet. It’s more of a sanctuary to me, rather than a large building filled with books. It helps keep me calm and collected. I went there by myself after school one day in 7th grade to get a book for some project and started reading it. No one bothered me and I was left alone to just read in peace.
Not only does reading expand a person’s vocabulary but it also mentally prepares them. I find that books when reading in a semi-quiet atmosphere with a cup of tea can become intriguing by being enhanced by my surroundings. Books serve as a mental stimulation and can be an activity for your brain to engage in itself, preventing it from losing its necessary power. Stress reduction, memory improvement, and critical thinking skills all can be the product of reading a book.
A part of my love for books correlates with this quote from Dr. Seuss, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” I enjoyed reading so much because it allowed me to be in a different world when I had to be stuck in mine. I do believe that reading as a child has made me who I am today, however, I just can’t find the time to read or even as much interest in reading as I used to.
I tried to push myself to read the actual book. It was hard since I get distracted easily. I have to go to the library or even hide inside the restroom, away from all the noises and distraction. For once in my life, I tried to push myself to read the actual book. I was able to learned new words and a better understanding of the concepts of the story.
I awoke coughing spitting out the remnants of blood that has filled my mouth. As I coughed I saw something. I... saw something. I could see for the first time. I laughed at the weird situation. Am I in heaven? I found myself wondering. I watched myself sit up, and I pulled up the front of my shirt just far enough to see the spot where the tree had impaled me.
