William Bourquard Katie Morrario English 9 May 9, 2024 7s Rugby I had gotten home from a long wrestling preseason practice, and my brother asked me a huge question when I walked in the living room. It was late August with clear weather outside. The grass was dry, and the air was hot making it hard to stay outside for too long, dry dirt and torn up grass covered Mulberry fields. The car felt like it just cooled down as we got into the driveway and parked in the garage. I walked into the house to the smell of the oven cleaning itself and all the windows open to cool the house and get the smell out. I walked into the living room, where it would have been impossible to have a blanket on. I saw my brother standing there covered in mud after his practice for rugby. We talked with …show more content…
What are we doing for fall break? Said my brother. My Mom answered, "We will probably go to Charleston for a break, as usual." I added, "We always go to Charleston for breaks, my friends are staying here this break, would it be fine if we didn't go this break and stayed here?" After a bit of back and forth between the three of us, my brother said, "If we stay Will could play rugby and start going to practices." I agreed with him saying, "I'll try rugby, it would be fun but I'm still going to focus on wrestling since it's my main sport but if it means staying here for a break, I will play it." My mom initially hesitated when she said, "I can't watch you play two high-contact sports, I would prefer if it stayed with one." I convinced my mom when I added, "It will keep me busy if I play it because it has two seasons, so I won't have as much downtime." My mom reluctantly agreed for me to play, but I had to wear a scrum cap. It was late August when I started to go to Rugby practice. I convinced my friend Quinn to play the season with me since he didn’t have a sport this time of
The Trolley Problem is a scenario possessing two similar versions that begs the question of whether or not it is ethical to kill a person in order to save five. In both versions of this problem, there is a trolley approaching a track with people tied down. In the first version there are two tracks; the first with five people tied down and the other with one person tied down, as the train is approaching the five people. Beside the track there is a switch that will cause the train to travel onto the second track, in which only one person is tied down. In the second version there is one track with the trolley approaching the five people who are tied down, except in this case there is a footbridge over the track with a person large enough to stop
It all started freshman year of high school. I really wanted to get involved in some kind of sport or club. I couldn’t decide what to do. Many people said I should join the lacrosse team and my response was “I have never played before, how am I suppose to make the team”. I always had an interest in lacrosse however I was scared to go out and buy all the expensive equipment and not make the team.. I went home that night and asked my parents what I should do. My dad encouraged me to go out and try. He said it doesn’t hurt to try. That next morning of school, I raced to the athletic office and signed up for lacrosse, and when that bell rang after school I went to the lacrosse store nearest to me and bought all of the gear so that I could make the first tryout. The fist tryout was the day after I bought all of the gear.
As more of my teammates began to show up, I recognized most of them. However, I learned later that if I went on to play in the Spring, this would not be the same exact team I would play with. With only twenty minutes until we began,I put on all of my gear and my dad gave me a thorough warm up. Time seemed to fly by, and before I knew it, everyone was gathered together as positions were being assigned. I was originally overwhelmed with excitement, but as the game drew closer, the joy I had felt was replaced with anxiety. The lacrosse game taking place before ours ended and we entered and took our place on our bench. I recognized the opposing team’s jerseys quickly and identified them as a travel team from our area. Taking one final breath, I rushed into the lacrosse net enjoying my bird’s eye view, unsure of what was to
In 2014 I was determined to make the high school soccer team. Every day at 8 am at the beginning of a dreadfully hot August morning, I would get to the turf fields for 4 hours and participate in “hell week”. After a long week, I made the JV team. I was never put into the game and felt like my hard work was put to no use. My sophomore year rolled around and I tried extra hard to impress the coaches. Anything and everything was a competition to make it to the top. By the end of the week, we all gathered around the paper that had names of the players who made it. I didn’t make the team. After tears and telling myself to move on, I went to the field hockey tryouts. I knew nothing about the sport and was terrified that soccer wasn’t my go-to
Sports play a very important role in my life ever since I could walk. My interests in playing sports began at the age of three as my parents signed me up for soccer, flag football, basketball, and lacrosse. First grade started my competitive edge as I began to play for travel teams in various sport tournaments. This competitive edge transferred from the sports field to the classroom having teachers and coaches helping me be the best I can be. Sports have continually well-shaped and defined my character by teaching me how to accept a win from working hard, also how a loss is an opportunity to learn and fix mistakes.
My team and I, who have been playing together for years, were all good friends. That season was when one of the owners of the league i played for went up to my coach (who was also my dad) and asked him if I was interested in joining the league’s club soccer team. I was so excited about doing it, but I also didn't want to do it at the same time. The summer before I played that season my brother had gotten me into liking basketball so I didn’t know what to do either stay in soccer, or start playing basketball. I also didn’t want to leave my team I was playing with because we had been playing together for years . So I end up declining the club offer, and finished the rest of the season with my team. I also ended up choosing to play basketball as my next sport and i still am playing basketball (I am hoping to try out for the GCA basketball team) as of right
From the time I was born, I began attending professional volleyball games on the west coast beaches to watch my mom play in these matches. I spent many of my early years of life lying on the beach watching volleyball games. Once I was old enough, I participated in almost every sport that our local YMCA offered. I have been doing gymnastics since I was four years old and have been competing in it since I was eight. With gymnastics I have traveled all over the country. So far, I have spent the majority of my eighteen years of existence learning about sports and the benefits and drawbacks that come along with them. As I grew older, and my commitment to gymnastics increased, my friends began to see less and less of me. It seemed that anytime they wanted to plan something I was busy. They did not like that I spent so much time at the gym and they did not understand my commitment. I do not think that they ever believed that the benefits I gained from my experiences were worth my other sacrifices. However, despite bad days, crammed schedules, and questionable coaches, I have concluded that the good elements of sports far outweigh the bad. I believe that every child should be involved in some kind of sport because of the valuable lessons that are taught ...
The year was 1869; a well dressed, lanky, and pale William J Lloyd rode atop his horse with no life about him whatsoever. He was tired, hungry, thirsty, and wondered that if he ever got off this disgusting brute that he was attempting to ride he would never be able to walk correctly again; by the way his behind was treating him. He glanced over at his paid trail companion who responded with a scowl. William’s companion, a short, pudgy little man who owned an unsuccessful butcher shop and was desperate for money had agreed to lead the very, very famous (and not in good way) Mr. Lloyd to the newly founded Bannack, Montana to start up a dentistry in town. By now he had realized he was not desperate enough. Actually, you could call this man perhaps the bravest and most courageous man on planet earth, for out of all Wyoming, no one would agree to take William Lloyd. Perhaps this was because William hadn’t seen much more than the inside of people’s mouths for most of his life. He didn’t know how to hunt, how to make a fire, or even how to fire a gun, so John Johnson, William’s trail mate, had to baby him the whole way there. However, the only thing Lloyd did know how to do was to shut John up. Every time John opened his chubby mouth, William was all over how dirty his teeth were. Consequently, there wasn’t much talk between the two “companions”. They were close to their destination, John knew this; just over this hill was Bannack, and just about an hour from now Johnson would have his money and he would be rid of Lloyd the loon. He chuckled to himself at the thought. As they crested the top of the hill, the sun rose behind them, illuminating town of Bannack and they both let out a sigh of relief. The two travelers started...
My junior year in high school, I went out for basketball. I liked it for a while, but when games started I was on JV. It was okay, but I was only getting to play two minutes per game. This didn't make me very happy. With all the time that I was putting in to play, it just wasn't worth it. My dad told me to just stick it out. Some of my friends told me that I should just switch to wrestling. I didn't know if this was possible, so I talked to the coach. The coach said he would be glad to have me on the team, but I would have to talk to the counselor. I talked to him and explained why I wanted to switch sports and he gave me the go ahead. There was only one thing standing in my way: how was I going to persuade my parents to let me wrestle. I talked to my dad about it and he said that if that was really what I wanted to do then that would be fine. I decided that I would play one more game of basketball and if things didn't get better, I would switch. Things didn't get better. I went in once for two minutes.
During my four years of high school I believe that my involvement in sports has helped me become a better person in life. I participated in varsity basketball and Track & Field all four years and my experience in both sports has taught me life lessons that I can carry with me for the rest of my life.
I’ve learned how devastating the effects of certain decisions can be, along with how important it is to avoid negative influences in my life. I’ve become more devoted to school, and have found that it’s a useful distraction from those negative influences. I’ve decided to join the tennis team and maybe next year the baseball team, because athletic activities provide a good way for me to spend my
A difficult situation that challenged me and made me reconsider my values was deciding between quitting football or quitting cross country. I have been in my school’s cross country team and track and field team since freshman year. Rising through the ranks and making a name for myself as one of the school’s fastest runners and captain of both teams. Along the way, I had caught the attention of the head track and field coach, who also happened to be the football coach. He had asked me if I was interested in joining the football team.
This was a contrast to the seasons before when I was eager to get involved in the action. That year was the toughest season for me. Rugby is an essential part of my life; it makes my life more interesting, entertaining and it is a good way to keep fit and healthy. I find my life is more satisfying and now it has shown me to manage rugby better and in turn my life as a whole. I am able to take better precautions to help prevent injury and manage injuries
Only a little while ago did I almost kill someone while simultaneously winning first place for my throwing team for track. Believe me, almost killing someone isn't my greatest achievement. The meet was all the way in Mc Minnville and we had to take a bus with not nearly enough seats for all of the boys. The bus ride was very uncomfortable for all of us. On most seats there were three people to a seat when they were only for a maximum of two. Everyone was relieved when we reached the stadium. With the weather being perfect for a meet, at the time it seemed like everything would go swimmingly.
I believe that life lessons are learned from sports. Through all my sports endeavors, I have learned many things. My coaches have touched my life in many different ways and have made me into a better person. Anyone who has not played a sport, I encourage you greatly to try one. Everyone should play or have a chance to play sports.
