She was brown, about the size of a placemat, and would soon control Australia. William was extremely proud of his invention. Her name was Enigma and under her watchful eye, humans would never do anything wrong again. William leaned back in his chair and took a swig of Coke. He sat up and considered the consequences of his next action. He said out loud to the computer, “The worst that could happen is they don’t listen to us. We both know what happens then, don’t we.” He chuckled to himself and his breath was vile. He extended his arm and struck the final key with his pinky. Enigma began dutifully watching her subjects and dealing out punishments. Ten Days Later… “How’s she working buddy?” Graham crossed the lab to the sink and emptied his …show more content…
Whaddya mean? I mean… of course. I invented her, didn’t I? Yeah… She’s fine.” William stammered. “Of course. Why wouldn’t she be alright.” Graham ran a hand through his dark hair. “For the first time ever, a computer is controlling humans.” He chuckled, “Why would I be nervous?” William shrugged, “Don’t trust me?” He turned away so Graham wouldn’t see his smug smile. “I still don’t understand why you’re having me adopt your kids. I mean, do you think Enigma will take all your time?” Graham punched the buttons on the Keurig machine. It was rusty and noisy but still functioned properly. “I don’t want to put them in harm’s way.” Or my way, thought William. Instead he said, “You understand.” “When do I pick them up?” Graham removed his mug from the keurig. “Oh, whenever.” “How ‘bout three hours?” “Fine.” He stood up to hike up his pants and left the lab leaving an unpleasant stench lingering in the air. Graham listened for the hum of the hover car and logged on to William’s computer. “Something… got to be… nervous about something…” He mumbled to himself. “Ah ha. I was right.” His face was grim in the morning light pouring through the large windows. “I can’t reverse this. Should have seen it coming. Shoulda seen it comin’.” He shook his head and gulped his coffee forgetting it was scalding hot. The pain raced through his esophagus and he could feel it burning in his …show more content…
“Nice to meet you Warner, I’m your father.” Graham shook the kid’s sweaty hand. “Sweet! You know Star Wars!” He shook his head. “Man I love the real old stuff. You come to take us with you huh? I’ll get Sayde” He pranced off belting out the elevator music. The kids took about two hours to pack their belongings. Graham thought for kids with such a rich father they didn’t own much. They dumped the stuff into the back of Graham’s hover car and he sped of. Neither kid looked back on their childhood home. “You guys are quiet.” Graham looked in the rear view mirror and switched the car to autopilot. He saw for the first time the strong resemblance between the two. They were both tall and athletic with thick blonde hair. They had millions of freckles dotted across their nose. The only big difference between the two was their eyes. Warner’s were glossy blue and Sayde’s were a kind of green that made grass look colorless. Both kids were dressed for the outdoors with hiking boots, green shorts with lots of pockets, and a green handkerchief for Sayde. Feeling that the lack of conversation was creating an awkward silence, Graham turned the radio to the police scanner. Sayde and Warner sat up and began to listen. They were calling all available units to St. Lucy’s local hospital that was apparently burning at a very rapid pace. Things like this
William was a casualty of the importance of respect. He didn’t earn the respect of others, even though it may not have been completely his fault. As Suzanne Kane said in her article “The Importance of Respect,” “If we want the respect of others, there’s no other way around it than to begin by respecting others first. If we act in selfish, self-centered ways, concerned only for our own wants and needs, others will likely steer clear of us.” “Men are respectable only as they respect.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson, American lecturer, essayist, poet, writer, and
Where they grew up, kids as young as 8 years old were recruited into illegal operations; Wes and Tony included. Mary tried everything she could, but had lost her sons to the wonder and curiosity that money brings. The important place a mother should hold in her son’s life vanished and she was left to take care of their mistakes. Later in their lives, both boys were caught in a heist that set them up for an entire lifetime in jail. Their arrest sent “cheering responses” from everyone in their community. The boys were not only involved with a robbery, but a murder as well. The word spread quickly about their sentences and a “collective sigh of relief seeped through Baltimore. At home, Mary wept” (Moore 155). Many families go through traumatic experiences comparable to Mary’s situation. The choices her sons made left her alone, parallel to the isolation the boys were experiencing as
Looking out across the stone-paved road, she watched the neighborhood inside the coffee colored fence. It was very similar to hers, containing multiple cookie-cutter homes and an assortment of businesses, except no one was there was her color and no one in her neighborhood was their color. All of them had chocolate skin with eyes and hair that were all equally dark. Across the road to her right, a yellow fence contained honey colored people. She enjoyed seeing all the little, squinted almond eyes, much smaller then her own, which were wide set and round. One little, sunshine colored boy with dark straight hair raised his arm and waved his hand, but before she could do the same back her father called her into the house. His lips were pressed and his body was rigid, the blue of his eyes making direct contact with her
William was finally able to see clearly what was important. It wasn’t his job that allowed him to think creatively or knowing the Declaration of Independence by heart. He no longer cared about the labels that were cast upon him, people could call him terrorist for all he cares. The thing in which he feared in the past, were now his ammunition to get exactly what he wanted: a straight shot to a payphone to hear his family’s voice, a chance to fix the physics of his daughter’s pictures, and to let his wife know that she came before his work. Alexi successfully showed us how to shed the weight of frivolous problems, enabling us to move more quickly to the things that we need most.
William was married to Maria, with a daughter named Grace. He loved his family very much. "He constantly made passes at her, not necessarily expecting to be successful, but to remind her he still desired her and was excited by the thought of her."(Alexie 56) William worked as a salesman. He was described as an obsessive workaholic, his job i...
As Monday morning rolled along, Molly gathered all her stuff at the door and yelled for her parents to hurry or she’d be late to catch the bus at school. With all her things stacked in the trunk of the car, her dad could hardly see past her purple suitcase in the rearview mirror, yet that didn't stop him from driving. When Molly and her family pulled up to the parking lot, it was packed with other seniors and their families, they had to park at the back near the entrance gate which was farther away from the bus she needed to go
?Are you serious about what you said just now? About reporting me?? he asked uncomfortably as I was about to close the door. His rigid posture showed that he wanted to glare at me. I had to answer him.
He walked into the files room, hoping that no one would walk in on him. "What?" he growled.
Yeah right, hogwash." She says, laughing. "How did you even know we were going to watch the movie?" "I didn't know," " Oh, so you just happened to know so much about the physics of a lightsaber even though you've never seen the movies before?"
Don, a child of the family said “I saw a person in a black cloak and pink arms.” “Oh, don’t be silly,”replied Emily. Don became quiet , looking around. When they were out of the airport, they went inside their white car and drove away from the airport. “How odd, there
“Speaking of, we have a case to work, so let's start.” With a stubborn sigh and a murmured ‘fine’ he stood up and walked over to the files regarding the crime. “Why would they do it anyway?” “I don’t know… hopefully
Seconds later, an acrid, burning smell filled the room. The keypad short circuited with a flash of sparks and popped open. I

"Ms Loren is everything okay?" Ahmad spoke with concern as he brushed by the Schoolmaster, who gave them only a tame shrug.
