Learning from Mother Education is not to teach men facts, theories or laws, not to reform or amuse them or make them expert technicians. It is to unsettle their minds, widen their horizons, inflame their intellect, teach them to think straight, if possible, but to think nevertheless. Robert Maynard Hutchins At each point in my life, I had fabulous teachers that helped open my mind to the bigger world outside. But the person who taught me the most was my mother. As a voracious reader, she gave me the example I emulate to this day. Then, I couldn't understand how she could stand reading so much nonfiction; I preferred novels. Now I see that her reading provided the necessary tonic to life among the Orr tribe. She was also my English coach: Any time I had a paper to work on, I sketched out my draft and then she would show me how to make it coherent. All her efforts finally paid off when I received the writing award at school-she had finally taught her daughter to write! She also was on the school board at my grade school, was politically active, and was active in our church. Seeing her stand up to error in public situations gave me the strength to do the same. Sadly, I had to fight error in my high school history class. I disputed my religion teacher's position concerning the civil rights movement (just one of many discussions we had that year). But without Mom's example, I would have been silent like the other kids. I could speak up because she also took the time to teach an added course to me on Saturdays-not only did I go to class every weekday at school, but Mom held special sessions of history class every Saturday afternoon, replete with really hard memorization
Although the VCR was first released to the public in 1974, it wasn’t until the early 1980’s that the public began catching on to this new invention. Still, the VCR was the most quickly adopted device of its time. In just three years, the sales of VCR’s jumped from 1.3 million units in 1981 to nearly 8 million units in 1984. The popularity of the household device was quite obvious, but the success of the VCR did not come so easily. Three years earlier, in October of 1981, after some struggle, the US court finally ruled that the home taping of broadcast signals was not an infringement. After that, the VCR quickly became a popular household device across the country (Winston 126-129). “The most common use of the VCR’s is to record TV programs fro viewing at a later date” (“VCR’s” 42). This so called “time shifting” was the foundation for the VCR’s success. Aside from its obvious TV connection, the VCR also provided a whole n...
In Europe a strong negative connotation is applied to the people known as "Gypsies." With recent human rights movements, however, the term "Roma," which emphasizes a rich history, culture and traditions is used. By some estimates there are 10 million Roma dispersed in every country in Europe. Genetic analysis estimates that the bloodline is 32-40 generations old with roots primarily traced back to India. Their exodus began somewhere between the 5th and 10th centuries AD, with their arrival in Byzantium between the 11th and 12th centuries and their dispersal through Europe was documented by the end of the 15th century.( Morar, 597) Although historically nomadic, many groups became sedentary. Two early permanent settlements were established upon their arrival in Europe: "Vlax Roma" into present day Romania and the "Balkan Gypsies" into the Balk...
If it hadn’t been for her making me learn how to think and learn for myself, I wouldn’t be where I am today. There were many times during my high school days where I needed to be independent in my learning because there were teachers who didn’t teach the lesson properly. While other student were struggling with those teachers I was able to overcome that trial and succeed in those classes. I’ve been told all my life that college is way more independent when it comes to learning than any other time I your life. I believe because I learned at such a young age how to teach myself, I have a greater chance at succeeding than other who have not had the same
The Gypsies of the former Czechoslovakia have suffered ethnic marginalization dating back to their arrival in Eastern Europe over 700 years ago. The collapse of communism in Czechoslovakia, and other Eastern Europe countries created the necessary conditions for the ethnic mobilization of the Gypsies and other minorities. During communism minorities presence in Eastern Europe was not officially recognized. The transition from the socialist system to democracy gave the Gypsies of Czechoslovakia a chance to participate in the political process, to represent their interests and end their ethnic marginilization. Though, due to historical circumstances dating back before communism this has been a tough task for the Gypsies and other minorities. The emergence of democracy and a free market economy in former Czechoslovakia has created many social problems for the Gypsies. There has been an increase of prejudice and violent attacks against the Gypsies, as well as widespread unemployment for the majority of unskilled, untrained Gypsies. The causes of the prejudice and conflicts involving Gypsies are attributed to both the social history of Eastern Europe from the interwar years as well as the nature of communist and postcommunist societies. The transition to a democratic form of government has brought about both positive and negative aspects for the Gypsies; in order to fully understand the current social position of this minority group it is imperative to analyze the history of the "Gypsy problem" in the twentieth century.
Surrealism, who has not heard this word nowadays? World of the dreams and everything that is irrational, impossible or grotesque, a cultural movement founded immediately after the First World War which is continued and practiced until today. To understand it better it is necessary to look deeper into the work of two outstanding artists strongly connected with this movement, people for whom this style was a part of their lives.
This lab explored the relationship between EMG and force and EMG and fatigue. It has been shown that EMG, fatigue and force levels are dependent upon type of contraction and whether or not the contraction is maximal or sub maximal. Seliger et al. (1980) gained insight into the differing force and EMG profiles of isometric, eccentric and concentric contractions. Fourteen subjects underwent a maximum voluntary contraction in the squat of the concentric, isometric and eccentric variations. He showed that the EMG activity in the rectus femoris showed little statistical difference. However the force reading showed its highest values during an eccentric contraction, it's lowest values during concentric contractions and its second highest values during isometric contractions (Seliger, 1980).
The history of the gypsies had not had a positive image in terms of what is to be considered socially acceptable. Because of the nomadic way of life. They have been looked down upon as outcast. Gypsies have been labeled as beggars, criminals, thieves and promoting the devils work by fortune telling. Gypsies are accused of being lazy, filthy, asocial, immoral, and lack work ethics. All of this being said in reference to the gypsy population raises a question in regard to the persecution of the gypsy during the holocaust. Was Hitler’s intent racially motivated, or were the gypsies perceived as a danger to society because of their conduct?
The provision gives broadcasters, cable operators, and other "video distributors" one year to develop a voluntary rating system for programming that contains "sexual, violent, or other indecent material." If the industry fails to agree on a rating system within that time, the FCC is to develop a rating system based on an advisory board's recommendations.16
now that I am a mother I understand her ways of parenting and thanks to her many lessons
The core is a vital component in proper function of the kinetic chain. Athletic performance is most often produced by the kinetic chain to reach a desired athletic task (Kibler, B., Press, J., & Sciasca, A, 2006). The core is important for providing local strength and balance. Since the core is central to almost all the kinetic chain controlling balance and range of motion will maximize all kinetic chains of upper and lower extremity function. Therefore, this literature review will concentrate on: the structure of the core, upper extremity power, and lower extremity power. This review offers support for research examining the effect of core strength on upper extremity and lower extremity power.
This is to improve muscular power as well with athletic performance to achieve maximal results and satisfaction for greater advantages in the same session/facility. Studies say that complex training has a critical ergogenic effect on the upper body and also improves jumping performance. These exercises require more rest (3-4 minutes) because of the heavy weight lifting as well with quick movement all in one. This type of training is best used for conditioning training. A similar study showed the comparison of maximal power training vs. weight and plyometric training. From the max power group doing weighted jump squats and bench press throws that are performed at their max, to the combined group doing weight training with squats and bench pressing with plyometric medicine ball throws and depth jumps. Results showed that both had an equal effect on improving sport performance in a short period of time in male student athletes who have not previously performed resistance training before. There was a plyometric program with the purpose of comparing land vs. aquatic plyometric training on vertical jump height, isokinetic quadriceps and hamstring strength and balance. Results revealed that the eight-week plyometric training program produced a greater effect in the aquatic group when compared to the land group. It was proven that

Strength training is a common part of the treatment care plan for most of orthopedic type injury1. Even healthy people and competitive athletes undergo some strengthen programs in order to improve their sport performance. Never the less, people who are inactive may get muscle weakness that can affect their ability to perform activities of daily living. Strengthen exercise is the best physical cure for muscle weakness 2. Health indicators such as body composition, cardiovascular fitness, blood lipid profiles, bone mineral density, and mental health are proven to be affected by strength training3–6. Apparently, strength is an important factor in improving individual life; whether an individual is recovering from an injury or trying to improve
She could explain anything to me and I would understand straight away. She helped a lot for my education and always was there to help. My parents knew that she could teach me and show how hard it is these days and how hard I should work. That is why they always made sure I saw her enough but it never was for me.
In my formative years, I am sad to admit that I was the most critical of my mother. We suffered from what experts would identify as ‘mutual incomprehensibility’, and I believe at times we still do; however, as I grow more and more into woman hood and our bond has been strengthened with experience, I have had the amazing opportunity to gain a true sense of my mother and have come to admire her in many ways ( though she probably doesn 't believe me). For whatever reason, I once found solace in reducing all my problems as some fault of my mother’s inability to prepare me for adulthood. Instead of seeking advice and wisdom, I rebelled! Looking back, I now realize she only wanted to protect me, to help me, but as a teen that felt like control
