If your mom and dad were both drowning, who would you save first? For me, I can’t save anyone. I do not know how to swim. As swimming season comes to a start, my dad suggests that I join the swimming team. A few weeks before the season starts, our school’s swimming coach takes out the first meeting. With around 50 people in the room, she tells everyone that there will be tryouts for the highly selective team. I stare around the classroom looking at my competition. I tell myself that there was no chance I was going to make the swimming team. A student that has no swimming background does not have a chance against those that have swam for years. Looking around, I realized that everyone else was extremely confident in their swimming. Showered with another wave of despair, I was not prepared to enter the pool. The sunlight reflecting off of the water shows that the water is warm. However, when I dipped my whole body in the pool, I was stung with immediate chill. I pounce back onto the surface of the water shivering and panting. Our coach continues to count down and I see other swimmers enter the pool at ease. Once everyone enters the pool, our coach says something about 25s and 100s. She told me to start swimming from one end of the pool to the other end. What looked like 25 yards to others, looked like 50 yards. I push off against the wall of the pool and start doggy paddling. The coach immediately stops me and tells me to practice kicking and freestyle against the wall of the pool. Two weeks has past and many have expected me to not make it on the team or to quit. However, the coach decides to not kick me off the team because she saw my potential. Every school day, from 4:45PM til 6:10PM, I kept going to practice. I barely missed practice and never came late. I have been swimming year-round on a club team since the age of six and when I was younger improving came relatively easily. However, around age 13, I hit a training plateau despite having the same work ethic and focus that I had previously had. I grew to despise swimming and at points I wanted to quit. However, unlike Junior, I had role models and mentors who were positive influences on me and who helped me to overcome this challenge. Primarily, I had several of my best friends on the team who convinced me to keep persevering and to not simply quit the sport that I loved so much just because I was no longer dropping time. For example, every day I watch my close friends Lizanne and Cate come to practice and give it their all, regardless of the numerous injuries and medical issues that plagued their swimming career; their positive outlook and dedication motivated me to try even harder than I had before. Moreover, I had by parents, something that Junior did not have; my parents were always there to support me after yet another disappointing meet reminding me that “you get five minutes for a win and five minutes for a lost”. My parents where my voice of reason as I tried to work through my issues; they were always there to encourage me, but also were very honest with me
A five-year-old girl who is unable to swim is drowning in a pool, where the depth is ten feet. She is incapable of communicating for help and continuously gulps copious amounts of water while kicking her legs and flinging her arms frantically. A young boy who is learning how to swim notices her desperate need for a rescue, but is too hesitant to do anything due to his fear of deep water. He then realizes that he does not want a young girl to die just because no one was able to come to her rescue, and builds up the courage to enter the deep end of the pool. He dives in just in time to rescue the drowning soul and conquers his fear of deep water, all because of courage.
I approach the rugged mountain, shielding my body from the nasty frost nipping at my exposed skin. The sun ever so lightly peeks over the horizon as I strap on my skis, lightly dusted with a thin layer of fresh snow. Although my body shivers unceasingly, I feel comforted by the surges of adrenaline pumping through my body. I skate briskly toward the ski lift to secure my place as the first person in line. On the slippery leather seats of the lift my mind races, contemplating the many combinations of runs I can chain together before I reach the bottom of the hill. I arrive at the peak of the mountain and begin building up speed. Floating on the soft snow, weaving through the trees and soaring over rocks, I feel as if I am flying. The rush of adrenaline excites me. I feed on it. I thrive on it. I am ski; I live for speed; I am an evolving technique and I hold a firm edge.
After stretching, we went back inside the main pool area where we warmed up more by swimming laps in the JV pool. Compared to the outdoors, the pool was warm. However, it was also about the temperature I like drinking my water; ice water that is. We swam a few laps, practiced our starting dives, and went over the competition order all by or in the JV pool. As a competitive swimmer, I train 19 hours a week as a member of the University of Manitoba Bison’s Men’s Swim Team. However, growing up, I was never a great swimmer. I just didn’t have the classic swimmer body type—tall, long limbs with big hands and feet—but I loved the sport. Looking back, I can imagine how my parents felt. Their short, scrawny kid desperately wanted to be in a sport that he wasn’t meant for.
It is the final hour of observation of the night, and, as the members of the water polo team rush to the opposite end of the pool that I am observing from, I become dazed. Sitting in five excruciatingly long, overwhelming college-level classes, listening to small-minded people rant about some political event or another, and watching my basketball team practice without me is enough to make the aqua blue walls of the pool area inviting. I stare off into the wall, wondering if, just like the water, I can jump right in and disappear.
It was finally time to swim. I finally came up with a plan and decided to swim in the deep side of the pool even though I didn’t know how to swim. I knew it would work but I was also scared. As I walked to the swimming pool, everyone laughed at me again for wearing a speedo. I dived into the deep side of the pool and noticed everyone was staring at me in amazement. Then I swam up and hung onto the side of the pool. Everyone was shocked and puzzled. Even the girl I liked looked surprised.

Swimming has been my whole life, since I jumped into the pool for the very first time. I loved every aspect of swimming from the adrenaline running through my body during my races and getting to spend even more time with my friends and my sister, and the stress of big meets coming up in the schedule. Except everything didn't go according to plan after the first day of school when I got home and I saw my parents sitting by my sister on the coach and my sister was crying.

I play the next three weeks with the JV team, shooting the best, but not on the invitational team. All I wanted was to get out of school and go golf, but as one of the best. We had JV practice, but that practice didn’t satisfy me. I would go to another golf course with my dad, and we would stay until it was too dark to see anymore. I practiced like this, six hours of practice everyday for a month, and because of it, my scores got better. Better to the point where coach finally put me on the invitational team, the team which I didn’t know at the time, but would be the team I play on for the rest of the season. In my first invitational meet I was nervous as ever, I didn’t want to get moved back down. My score tied a player on the team, but we tied as the worst scores out of all of us. That score was good enough though for me to stay on, and play in the next invitational meet, and the next one. But just because I was on the invitational team didn’t mean I could quit practice. Finish, Finish, Go, and Go you just set the new world record. Every four years lots of people gather around a pool cheering for Olympians. It is a very noisy place. A lot of Olympians that are part of the summer Olympics are very athletic, they swim all year around. The swimming Olympic history and background is very interesting. They have done so many new things over that past couple of years. They come out with new rules every year to make things more fair and challenging. There are a lot of events and tons of records that have been broke. A lot of Olympians have set future goals to stride for. I was swimming the 200 meter fly I was at a really good time when I had 50 meter sprint left at the end all I could think about was I’m going to set the new world record. Olympic swimming is a very fun sport it is very athletic. Every year in the summer time every one always sits around a TV watching this it is very famous in America. Swimmers from all around the world come and here and compete. There is a lot of competition there I have found out a lot about the history of swimming. There are a lot of events and tons of records that have been broke. A lot of Olympians have set future goals to stride for.
