If your mom and dad were both drowning, who would you save first? For me, I can’t save anyone. I do not know how to swim. As swimming season comes to a start, my dad suggests that I join the swimming team. A few weeks before the season starts, our school’s swimming coach takes out the first meeting. With around 50 people in the room, she tells everyone that there will be tryouts for the highly selective team. I stare around the classroom looking at my competition. I tell myself that there was no chance I was going to make the swimming team. A student that has no swimming background does not have a chance against those that have swam for years. Looking around, I realized that everyone else was extremely confident in their swimming. Showered with another wave of despair, I was not prepared to enter the pool. The sunlight reflecting off of the water shows that the water is warm. However, when I dipped my whole body in the pool, I was stung with immediate chill. I pounce back onto the surface of the water shivering and panting. Our coach continues to count down and I see other swimmers enter the pool at ease. Once everyone enters the pool, our coach says something about 25s and 100s. She told me to start swimming from one end of the pool to the other end. What looked like 25 yards to others, looked like 50 yards. I push off against the wall of the pool and start doggy paddling. The coach immediately stops me and tells me to practice kicking and freestyle against the wall of the pool. Two weeks has past and many have expected me to not make it on the team or to quit. However, the coach decides to not kick me off the team because she saw my potential. Every school day, from 4:45PM til 6:10PM, I kept going to practice. I barely missed practice and never came late.
