The ground was blanketed with snow, there was a faint growl, I started running as fast as I could, if it weren’t for that chain I would either be in the hospital or dead. As I stood in the snow, I could feel the warm blood dripping down my leg and a sharp pain in my head as if someone had just hit me with a hammer. For a ten-year-old who was enjoying his summer road trip to Kansas with his Guardian, Uncle Steve, everything during this moment would stay drilled into my memory forever. From here on out I would forever remain cautious and be more aware of what animals were around me.
My summer was going great because every year between late June and early July me and Uncle Steve, go on a two and a half week road trip from Hemet, California to

Kansas City, Kansas. Halfway through the road trip we would stay at his parents house in Kansas and meet with his family and then for a day he would drop me off at my grandma’s house in Kansas City, Missouri. During my stay at my grandma’s beat up, old farmhouse I would drive their tractor or watch t.v. with my brother Russell and his daughter Shelby, and twins Michael and Curtis. Because my brother went out on a grocery run he left me, Shelby, Michael, and Curtis alone with my grandma, grandpa, and mom. Do to the fact that when you're from California and you haven’t seen snow, watching t.v. gets boring. So I decided to ask if they wanted to go outside. “Hey, guys you wanna go outside and build either a snowman or have a snowball fight?” And they said “Okay.” For the first thirty minutes we made the world’s worst snowman. After seeing how bad the snowman was, and how cold we were, we decided to destroy the snowman and run back inside until we got warm. Twenty minutes later Curtis asked, “You guys want to go outside and have a snowball fight.” We then bickered over what to do because Shelby didn’t want to go outside. Michael, Curtis, and I came up with a plan to bring snowballs inside and to attack Shelby. Shelby then figured out what we were going to do so she decided to come outside with us. We then spent about an hour making snow forts during our battle. After that Michael, Curtis, and Shelby wanted me to meet my brothers dog Bully, a 50 pound pitbull.
By his name and what kind of dog he was I should have known something bad was bound to happen. I as they walked up to him, I stayed back. They kept saying “He is a good dog,” “He’ll love you,” “Watch, see nothing’s happening when I pet him.” So I decided to walk forward. After each step I could feel more heart beating faster and faster. Finally I was standing in front of Bully, he was looking at me. I dug up the courage to stick out my hand and pet him on the head. But as I stuck out my hand I heard a faint growl and then a bark. At that moment I know my only choice was to run away as fast as I could. As I was running I could hear the barking and the chain he was tied to ringing like bells behind me. I felt his head hit me in between my knees. I ran to edge of this 2 foot cliff where I then slipped on ice and hit my head. But with the adrenaline still pumping through me I didn’t feel anything and I just kept running. Once I got to the side of the house where I was sure the dog couldn’t get to me I stopped and stood in the snow. Then I started to feel the pain and blood running down my leg. I looked down and saw the large stream of blood on my jeans and the blood pooling around my feet in the snow. I then started balling. I ran inside to my mom and told her what happened and that I could hardly stand on my left leg. We then looked at my leg and I could see three punctures in the front of my thigh and the blood rushing out of them. I then begin to feel sick to my stomach, so my mom bandage my leg, gave me some water, and Ibuprofen. My mom then went to go talk to the kids about what happened. She then told my grandma and grandpa, and my grandpa demanded that my brother put the dog down or he would. THat was when I learned that it wasn’t the first time that dog bit someone. I watched t.v. tell Uncle Steve picked me up. Once I got in the car I started crying again and
told him what happened. Uncle Steve then said “I know….. your Mom told me everything.” During the car ride to his parents house I fell asleep and when I woke up Uncle Steve said I had had a nightmare. Once we arrived at his parents house we noticed that his sister Jenny and step brother Dan were there. I went and got ready for bed and while did that Uncle Steve told Dan everything. As I walked back in the room Dan stopped me and asked to see the bite. I showed it to him. He then explained to me that I shouldn’t be afraid to be around dogs at all and that this was all a lesson to learn from. Dan said “Think of them as battle scars.” “Think of the story you have now.” After what he told me I knew what happened was the for the better, even though Bully didn’t get to live through the next couple months.
The sweat was dripping down my face as I pushed the weights off my chest. Everyone ran towards their bags after a student said there was a gun in school. Twitter was the first source that we checked just to make sure. Boom! The door slammed open as coach Ben yells “Hurry up and get out”. My heart started beating faster and faster. We didn’t know what was going on. As we were running to the gym everyone was panicking and pushing each other. I could feel the burn on my elbow but I didn’t know what it was. When we got to the gym my elbow was covered in blood. We were told to get down and stay quiet. Later on we were told a student brought a gun to school and was planning on committing suicide. That was one of many gun incidents at my high school.
Growing up as an only child I made out pretty well. You almost can’t help but be spoiled by your parents in some way. And I must admit that I enjoyed it; my own room, T.V., computer, stereo, all the material possessions that I had. But there was one event in my life that would change the way that I looked at these things and realized that you can’t take these things for granted and that’s not what life is about.
A calm crisp breeze circled my body as I sat emerged in my thoughts, hopes, and memories. The rough bark on which I sat reminded me of the rough road many people have traveled, only to end with something no one in human form can contemplate.
Three inches of fresh snow fell last night, creating a blanket of freshness that reflects the last rays of moonlight. As we drive into our property we see fresh deer tracks and my heart starts pumping, I have been away from Wisconsin for a few months and this morning is the first time I entered these woods since September. A few hundred yards into the woods we jump three deer walking the road. They bound off into the darkness in flashes of brown silhouetted by snow. We park...
Spring break 2011 I went to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina with my family for vacation.

Nothing could be worst than your dad bringing up "THE CONVERSATION." Starting at age 5 I loved playing soccer, running up and down the field, making moves and kicking balls to the back of the net was always the way to go. Soccer meant the world to me and especially playing with my best friends since the day I started. My days would go something like this, go to school, get home,do homework then get ready and go to a beautiful fun day at soccer! After soccer I would go home sit on the couch and eat.I was a lazy one. That's why I hoped my dad would never ever bring up this conversation.... But he did anyways.
Leaving the bodies for last we walked down the drive to take a look. Several rifles and shotguns were leaned carefully again the big oak. Two handguns and some knives were on the grass in front of them. Four people dangled from a branch of the tree close enough to each other to bump like a weird wind chime. A young couple and the other twice their age at a guess from the gray hair and styles of dress. They were probably parents and a married son or daughter with their spouse. Other than being hung there were no injuries apparent on any of the four. From the condition of the bodies they had been dead about a day.
On the Monday October 27th, 2014, for the first time in 4 years I did not wake up at 5:30 in the morning, I was not putting on a green skivvy shirt and shorts. There was no formation, no one that was higher command I had to report to, telling me where I had to go, what time I had to eat breakfast, what was I doing this day or what our platoon plans were for the day. There were no PT (physical training) I had to do this morning. Instead, I woke up grab a regular t-shirt, khaki shorts, and my two sea bags full of clothing and gear that I collected during my time in the Marine Corps. I threw everything in my vehicle and drove from Camp Pendleton, California to Quincy, Illinois. Within two weeks I was accepted to Southern Illinois University Carbondale. For three days, I stayed at the

I looked at the tickets in my hand, and then imagined the smile on Joshua’s face as I handed him a new guitar. I quickly put the tickets up for sale on the internet, and in less than five minutes I had an offer. A girl messaged me and said that she would give me $20 more than asking price. The girl and I met at the local music store, and she gave me the $200, and I grudgingly handed over my two BTS concert tickets. The girl thanked me and walked away as quickly as a cheetah, like if she didn’t I would change my mind and take the tickets back. I finally walked in the music shop, and I looked around at all the guitars before finding one that was blue and black, two of his favorite colors. The guitar jumped down from the shelf and into
“ Of course I am!” I answered with a mouth full of luscious velvet cake.
It was a long and silent night. I couldn’t help but realize that, as the night progressed, my chances of survival were decreasing. I had intentionally come out to the forest to find some crowberry for my pet jackalope, Rufus; it was the time of season the berries were to be at their ripest point, but little had I known that it would arrive. It was a beast with teeth the size of rock, the head of a tiger, the body of a snake, the wings of a great eagle, and green, glowing eyes staring at you as if your death approached with every step it took. I was lucky to have survived, but my friend, Thomas, wasn’t. I had watched as the beast took Thomas away to its lair in the high peaks of Mount Atheodus, while I had to return to Rufus.
If time could stand still or even go back I would make it so I never moved and to be back with him. I miss his short blonde hair and his bright blue eyes. My names Dakota I have brown hair and hazel eyes. I used to live in California till I moved to Moscow due to my families issues in California. Let’s rewind time to before I moved so I can tell you my story.
I lowered my body, peering through the tall, verdant grass to make sure it was safe. I stood up and sprinted in the direction of the next marked tree. A loud growl filled the air, and I pushed my legs to move faster. My heart palpitated wildly in my chest. After turning around, I ducked down, avoiding the sand colored wolf from knocking me to the ground.
