It was a cold morning in Oklahoma, not too cold for a jacket but rather a day where you wish you could stay in the oceans of your warm blanket. The year, 1962; a time of war and unrest between the nations but that never seemed to bother Peter because in his mind he was off to college. The bats went off to sleep while Peter proceeded on with fetching the mail off the icy doorstep. After analyzing all the letters he received, one peculiar piece of mail stood out for youthful peter. Slowly and steadily opening the bright yellow letter his eyes widened and his body stood numb as he read the words, “You have been drafted to serve your country in the Vietnam War”. His world fell silent whilst the sun arose above the frosty trees.
The next week Peter reported to the army base where he was told he would be participating in a once off rescue mission called Operation “The Hive”. Oddly enough he was glad as he was actually one of the lucky ones as his role of support cover meant that he would never have to touch the blood drenched soil of Vietnam. However, Peter couldn’t help but feel lost in the concrete jungle that was the army base which had bleached his eyes once filled with life, colour and a future. After a few stressful hours he finally opened his eyes to the vast devastation that was the Vietnam War. Endless fields of nothingness captured his eyes as the helicopter soared over valleys of the once brave men that were no more. The whole idea of humanity seemed to have ceased to exist in these parts as all these soldiers were so blinded by their refusal to recognise the goodness in a man’s soul.
