Children, Women, and Men were in awe as a man came back from an impossible journey. A man that was sworn not to come back from this journey and yet he did and he did victoriously. Perseus was very noble, brave, strong, and handsomer. These flaws makes a person a greek hero. Everybody knew him because he was one of the first original Greek Heroes. He came before Hercules and came before a lot of other famous greek heroes. Perseus is one of the few heroes that actually does not die because Perseus only died due to human life cycle because he was not immortal. He went on many journeys that he did not really need to go on but he did the journeys because it involved people that he loved more than himself. Some people believe that Perseus did not actually do his journey for other people, It is the way he actually goes and defeats these challenges. First, Perseus had to do a task for his mom. He did not have to do this task, But he did because he loved his mom. Then with that he gave his mom a goodbye and went off to slay medusa. (D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths, page 116) Next, Perseus had to do a task that he did not really have to do. But since this poor innocent woman was going to die for a sacrifice to Poseidon he acted. He was so quick with hermes sandals and with Hades cap it was almost too easy. Perseus did this task because it was for a good cause. In conclusion, Perseus is one of the greatest heroes from ancient Greek mythology. According to both the ancient and modern definitions of what a hero is, the exploits and adventures of Perseus all make him fit into both standards of what a hero is.
Odysseus has all the qualities made to be a true hero. Not only did Odysseus fight on behalf of the Greeks in Troy (Trojan War), but everything he went through he learned a valuable lesson at the end; Odysseus endured so much during his journey going back to Ithaca but he never gave up on any of his principles. He also had good escape strategies, and he risked his life to save others. Imagine you being on the same journey Odysseus went through, do you honestly believe you would have survived? He made some minor mistakes along the way but nobody’s perfect. That’s why Odysseus is a hero because, he’s strong, and intelligent and was able to get out of sticky situations.
For a character to be an epic hero, he must possess four characteristics. These four characteristics include the following: (1) he must be high born, (2) the hero must have human weaknesses, (3) he must be brave,and 4) he must be clever. In The Odyssey, Homer’s character Odysseus was an epic hero because he possessed all four of the characteristics.
In conclusion, Odysseus deserves the title of a hero because he shows bravery, displays a change in character, and has the Gods supporting him throughout his journey home. Odysseus has the courage to overcome physical, emotional, and intellectual challenges. While Odysseus he is on the hero’s journey, he vastly improves his character. He changes from arrogant to humble, and learns leadership qualities, and most importantly, his place in the world. Odysseus has the revelation that the gods are above him, and are in control. Because he realizes the supremacy of the gods, his reward is assistance from the gods themselves. Odysseus is not a perfect man, and is flawed, just like every other human. Overall, Odysseus is a hero because Odysseus is a clever and intelligent man, he is a courageous soldier and leader, and he is loyal to his crew. Odysseus confirms his role as a hero because he puts thought into all of his choices, he is quick-witted, and he frees himself of excessive self pride. From sacrificing six of his own men to surrendering his self pride to the gods, Odysseus accepts the noble title and proves himself deserving of being a hero. He took on a journey in which he grew into himself and rid himself of the one thing that held him back all along; his hubris. At the end of the journey, Odysseus went from being a selfish, cocky leader to being a selfless, modest hero.
Odysseus was known as a brawny, brilliant and heroic figure, but those who knew him better knew that he is more than a hero. They knews that he could get curious at times and put everyone in danger. The definition of a hero is unique for every individual; however there are several regulations that majority of individuals can agree on. A hero must exhibit traits such as humility, kindness, and courage. Once the candidate expresses hubris, displays cruelty, or retreats from a formidable challenge, he cannot be considered a hero. Lastly, a hero candidate must overcome challenges that defy the odds. He must deliver a gift to society that benefits society as a whole; such gifts can be freedom, liberty, or hope. Odysseus in The Odyssey, by Homer, fulfilled these requirements and rightfully earned the title of a hero. Odysseus is well deserving of the title hero because he has put the needs of others before his own, shown signs of courage in the face of adversity, and displays humility by ridding himself of his hubris.
These two stories are so different from each other they just have two things for each section that are the same. Heroes Every Child Should Know is a more interesting story of how to kill Medusa. Perseus the poem isn't that good because it just has a part of what how to kill Medusa it is just that he had a shield and just chopped her head off. So the rest of the paragraphs are just to say the similarities and differences. Perseus is different by many things the characters, settings, event, and the theme.
In the epic poem, The Odyssey, by Homer, Odysseus goes through many trials while trying to return home from the Trojan War. On his voyage home, he must visit the Land of the Dead, evade the Sirens, Scylla and Charybdis and when he does arrive home, participate in a tricky reunion with his wife, Penelope. All of these examples show that Odysseus has extreme determination and perseverance. Perseverance is an excellent quality that few possess which can spark achievement.
Not many heroes were worshiped in Ancient Greece, they worshiped their gods. Perseus was a widely known hero because he was a demi-god. He was the son of Zeus, the god of all gods, and his mother was the daughter of a king but she was not a god. During the Golden Age, when most of these gods were worshiped, they believed in the olympian gods that lived on mount Olympus. They all were gods of different areas of life and had their own unique symbol. The people would worship them and give them sacrifices, each specified for the god they were worshiping. Theseus first displays his heroic nature when he was seven years old. Hercules came home and took of his lion’s skin. Perseus behead the mortal Gorgon with one slice of his sharp sickle. Perseus risked his life just to prove his loyalty and courage. Theseus is a number of heroic things such as strong, selfless etc. Most importantly he is fearless and continuously is able to display it through his actions.
