Persepolis is full of creative and interesting visuals but the 2 images on page 102 are the most interesting as they seem to look very similar but both have a very different meaning. The protagonist is a young girl who lives in Iran and experiences very hard times in Iran as the story is also placed during the revolution of Iran. For her the Iranian revolution is a very hard time since some family members die and very many of her friends leave Iran to not risk living during the dangerous time at Iran. In the visuals on page 102 the author Marjane Satrapi uses a lot of artistic elements that seem to enhance the story. In this essay we will analyse Happiness, Hope and Violence in the two pictures on page 102.
Firstly we see that the painter
wants to represent happiness in these pictures because when we look at the bottom picture as we see that the children dance around and smile. But then when we look upwards we see that the poorer children are not experiencing the happiness that Marjane and the other children in the lower picture were. And in the lower picture we also see that the background is white suggesting that these kids didn’t really have any big troubles while in the picture above the background is also white but there are many lot of black spikes that might show that there is no happiness there. And we also see in the text boxes above that the children are getting promised a better life after they die but in the picture we see something that the children are basically running towards their death as there are many mines on the battlefield and the is just a tool to manipulate the children to thinking that they’ll go to heaven but that might not even be the case. It is also very noticeable that the children that are dancing have big smiles on their faces, while in the image above not only do the children have all black clothes they also have no face maybe stating how sad their life has ended and that they didn’t have any happiness at all. The second thing represented in these pictures is hope we see it represented very clearly and that is because in the picture above we see that the kids died in explosions, but they possess something wrapped around their necks. We see that the children have a golden key. They received the key from the government so that they would fight for Iran and also to give the children hope so that if they die they are promised all the way to the paradise. And the children in the bottom picture also seem to have a lot of hope since they still live in Iran where the revolution still takes place and their lifestyle becomes more difficult everyday as they lose more and more products in the stores. We also see that the children in the bottom frame have hope since they try and forget the unpleasant life they experience now by going to parties and having fun.
Persepolis is a inspirational story written by Marjane Satrapi in the perspective of a young girl’s life during a powerful, historical moment in Iran. The Islamic Revolution was a life-changing moment that impacted her view on the world around her and her innocence shaping her into the woman she is today. Not many people understand what it feels like to feel pain, hurt and abandonment as a child from major and minor things. The author writes this story and decides for it to be a graphic novel to allow the not only young readers, but also for those who do not understand what happens everyday in the world they live in. Satrapi uses all rhetorical stances, ethos, pathos, and logos to show problems, purpose and emotions.
Throughout Satrapi’s memoir visual text is used to give the readers a visual or image to perceive the effects of the war. On page 3, Marji explains how the veil became an obligation for young girls to wear on their heads, and in the visual shown, these youngs girls are revolting against the government by using their veils as toys. Another effective visual in Persepolis, is the image on page 15 of the citizens running and their bodies burning because the government had set the cinema on fire; it creates a visual that pulls at the reader’s heart strings. This visual represents the suffering of citizens during the war because of their own government. Satrapi’s visuals create pathos within the memoir.
In the graphic novel, Persepolis, the main character, Marjane, faces many coming of age moments. Each one of these change her in a way that impacts her view on the world around her as her and her family strive for a better life amongst a war that hinders their ability to follow their beliefs. Marjane learns to forgive, experiences pain and suffering, and changes her opinions on God and her own views on religion forever. Marjane’s life has been filled with hard times, but also glorious moments as well.
Colonialism has a severely negative impact on those being affected due to unknown cultures and systems being infiltrated in their country. In the first chapter of “The Complete Persepolis” by Marjane Satrapi, the author starts off with the Islamic Revolution and the changes it brought to her immediate surroundings. This reminds me of colonialism and the changes it brings to the colonized country. Colonialism started with the expedition of the Portuguese and Spanish to discover new wealth. Since then, the drastic after effects of colonialism are still felt today by the affected group. In the 20th century, colonialism plays a part in why some cultural groups are the way they are today. In conclusion, the change the Islamic Revolution did to Marjane’s immediate surroundings is similar to how colonialism affected the colonized countries.

Persepolis is a graphic novel depicting the life of author Marjane Satrapi’s life throughout the Islamic revolution, starting from her childhood. At one point in the story, the Shah of Iran has left the country, and Marjane’s parents think that they will have new freedoms. Later, however, the country is bombed and fundamentalists occupy the United States embassy. After these events, Marjane is ultimately forced to leave the country without her parents to live in Europe. This was foreshadowed in arguably the most significant panel in Persepolis, the 7th panel on page 43. It features Marjane and her parents, sitting in the family’s living room, the news on a television in the background. They are discussing the fact that the Shah recently left Iran to live in Egypt. Around the panel’s frame is a serpent-like creature. In this panel, Marjane Satrapi uses the frame, and contrasting facial expressions and dialogue to show that the Shah is not the only problem in Iran, foreshadowing the unexpected events of unrest that fill the rest of the story.

For Marji, her informal education gained through observing those around her helps her answer life's big questions, like how to express ideas and thoughts. Her formal education also is able to teach her about the world around her. Marji’s books on Marx and Darvishian allows her to see the world from a different perspective. When all of these educational forms come together, Marji starts to develop her own personality and identity. Along the way, Marji naturally starts to see how much power educators have in shifting certain narratives due to their bias. One aspect I found particularly interesting in the readings was the use of specific perspectives in validating and adding a personal connection to the events of the novel.
