The time and place of a graphic novel can have a huge effect on how it is written, including both cultural and contextual elements. An example of this can be seen in the graphic novel Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. This is a memoir of growing up in Iran during the Islamic revolution. In the graphic novel, Satrapi paints an unforgettable portrait of daily life in Iran and the difference between home life and public life. Because of the time and place of this novel we are able to see a child's eye view of political repression and the human cost of war. Satrapi includes a lot of information about this, like when Marji is stopped by the guardians of the revolution because of what she is wearing, and also when Marji's mother is insulted and threatened
