I am honored to be applying for the Master of Fine Arts in Performance and Pedagogy at Texas Tech University. I believe my skills as an artist will blossom in this program as it is a place where I will be challenged and where I can develop my acting, directing, and teaching philosophies. My passion for the Performing Arts has been clear ever since I was eight years old; I have always wanted to act, direct, and inspire others through the stage. Nothing can replace the adrenaline-pumping, infinite feeling of thoroughly investing yourself, delving beyond the pale, and allow the soul of the character to be made flesh. The combination of Performance and Pedagogy has broadened my knowledge as an actor, educator, and student of the dramatic arts. My studies at the University of Central Oklahoma allowed me to explore new styles and approaches to performing. While there I performed in such shows as Three Penny Opera, …show more content…
My studies of the Theatrical Arts have invited me to explore new styles and approaches; during my sophomore and junior years I was able to focus on Arthur Lessac’s style of Voice and Movement, in which I was able to focus on the development of several monologues by Shakespeare’s character Falstaff utilizing Lessac’s use of resonants in the voice and holistic approach to acting. This was both fascinating and challenging in that I was able to overcome several of my own limitations and embrace new techniques that enhanced my understanding of the text and the character. During my study of the Modern Theatre, I played Martin in The Goat or Who is Sylvia?, a man who fell in love with a goat. I lost myself and opened up personally to exploring various types of love, the care of a parent towards a child and true love that, while it may seem strange to
On March 31, I had the pleasure of seeing Hello Dolly at Mandeville High School. As a talented theater student at the school, I take the shows that are put on very seriously. Being involved in the show, helping make set pieces, and working at the box office brings light to me as an individual, every little helping hand counts. I want to make sure that my school represents theater in the best way possible. With this production put on, I am proud to say that I am a theater student at Mandeville High.
In this area of theatre i have learned more about brainstorming, character position, the effectiveness of music, the effectiveness of light and at what darkness and more about character goals and character formation both physical and vocal.
Throughout the years, America has pursued the performing arts in a large variety of ways. Theatre plays a dramatic and major role in the arts of our society today, and it takes great effort in all aspects. Musical Theatre, specifically, involves a concentration and strength in dance, acting, and singing. This is the base that Musical Theatre is built upon. For my Senior Project, I helped choreograph multiple scenes in a community musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie”. Choreography is a way of expressing oneself, but it has not always been thought of for that purpose. Agnes de Mille’s expressive talent has drastically affected how people see choreography today. Agnes de Mille’s influence in the world of dance has left a lasting impact in the Performing Arts Department, and her revolutionary works are still known today for their wit, lyricism, emotion, and charm.

These differences in character, though seemingly small, lead the audience to draw two very different conclusions about the characters’ situations and why they are placed in them. The analyzation of the characters changes from Shakespeare’s written play to Hoffman’s rendering of A Midsummer Night’s

The liberal arts curriculum UCSD’s Theatre & Dance department is designed to provide the educational experience of a small Ivy League college within a large public university and is consistently ranked among the top graduate theatre training programs in the country. The program also shares a close relationship with the Tony Award-winning La Jolla Playhouse where both Caroline and I were part of theatrical productions featuring the work of undergraduate actors, as well has having the opportunity to take part in
Simone Ellul, theatre practitioner I enjoyed Shakespeare at secondary school so much I went on to read the Merchant of Venice just for fun. I eventually wrote two theses on the playwright: the first, for my BA (Hons), was about Shakespeare on film. I then went on to read for a Master’s in Staging Shakespeare at the University of Exeter, and for my final performance directed a multilingual version of Othello. The reason for my interest in Shakespeare can be attributed to his “excellently well-penned” text, but also to the fact that he developed the concept of the character and changed the acting style of his age, as well as developing new genres. Studying Shakespeare has helped me appreciate and understand not only his works, but theatre in general.
I’ve learned to appreciate the beauty of how theater is more than a mere performance, but rather an artform with nuance and depth. My knowledge on theatrical styles has expanded and some of my favorites we have studied in class are Brechtian and Chinese theatre styles. I grew up participating in musical theatre, but never had the opportunity to truly learn the history and details of the craft. After studying RENT, I am inspired by the various possibilities for theater beyond acting, singing, and dancing. Theater can be used for activism or as a form of commemoration. Theater is relevant by communicating issues to the world. Theater is so much more than a dramatic presentation. The theater that I have come to appreciate the most are the performances that relay a greater purposeful message about society amidst the theatricals on
In this paper, I will be focusing briefly on my knowledge and understanding of the concept of Applied theatre and one of its theatre form, which is Theatre in Education. The term Applied Theatre is a broad range of dramatic activity carried out by a crowd of diverse bodies and groups.
After overcoming the troubles of becoming an actor and a playwright, William Shakespeare has become well renowned. His works reach to people all around the world despite the language barriers and different races and cultures. For centuries, the popularity of his work...
Shakespeare got much recognition in his own time, but in the 17th century, poets and authors began to consider him as the supreme dramatist and poet of all times of the English language. In fact, even today, no one can match his works or perform as well as he did. No other plays have been performed as many times as Shakespeare’s. Several critics of theatre try to focus on the language of Shakespeare and to take out excerpts from the literary text and make it their own resulting in various persons, poets, authors, psychoanalysts, psychologists and philosophers.
