Performance Management
For this assignment I have been assigned to look into the performance
measures for a hospital and also an electrical goods retailer. From
this I will look into a few companies of each and write what sort of
performance measures they use and if their management priorities
should lie elsewhere or not.
Hospitals
Performance measures for Finances
Finance is a major part of running a hospital. As much as any company
or hospital would like to make a profit and expand, it also doesn’t
want to be over funded. Government can take some of that money away to
fund other hospitals. Therefore running a hospital employs a different
management strategy to any other business with regards to finances.
Hampstead Royal Free Hospital is located in North London and it serves
about half a million patients a year. A good indicator for the
financial performance of the Royal Free hospital is Profitability. The
Royal Free employs 4500 people and has an annual turnover of £260
million. This shows us that Hampstead is not targeting too big an area
for patients (north Camden, south Barnet and west Haringey). But it
can also be looked in another way. If they have an annual turnover of
£260 million, maybe they should be serving an even bigger area, or
developing more specialised equipment etc… According to the NHS
ratings, The Royal Free has underachieved with regards to their
financial management. As a hospital they submit their financial
support annually but this was not in line with the targets within the
NHS plan. This could be down to the fact that they received too much
money with not putting too much back to the hospital. Market standing
and position is another but this is related to the ‘NHS plan’ through
the NHS ratings. It is related to the standings from the previous year
and the financial stability of the hospital as a whole. In the Royal
Free’s strategic framework and aims, nothing is mentioned with
finances. But I feel that some of their priorities should change. With
such a big turnover, I feel the Royal Free should constantly be
reinvesting more of ...

Genocides have happened multiple times in history, ranging from small genocides to astonishing violent genocides that changed history. The Armenian Genocide was an extreme devastation of the Armenians in 1915 that was an unbelievable part of history. The Armenian Genocide happened in the Ottoman Empire and all started with the Turks hatred for the Armenians who they didn’t even want to have a say in the government. After the Turks seized power from the weak Ottoman Empire sultan, they changed the government and got extreme support to avoid external overthrow. The Turkish turned to extreme nationalism and really only allowed Turkism, and saw Armenians as a roadblock in their way, which lead to the massacre of Armenians. The Armenian Genocide was obviously outstanding, but when compared to other genocides like the Holocaust, similarities can be determined. The Armenian Genocide and the Holocaust can distinctly be compared by the discrimination, method of oppression, and lack of help from the U.S. involved in the two genocides.
Mazian, F. (1990). Why genocide? The Armenian and Jewish experiences in perspective. United States: Iowa State University Press.
In November of 1914, the Ottoman Empire joined World War I. In one of its first major battles, it fought Russia and lost miserably. The Young Turks began blaming Armenians for their lack of dedication. They started a campaign of anti-Armenian propaganda, with sayings such as ?The Armenians are in league with the enemy?. Finally, in 1915, the Temporary Law of Expropriation and Confiscation was...
The denial of the Armenian genocide and the use of the term “alleged” are insults to those who have agitated over the years in highlighting the genocide and the Armenian people themselves. The pictorial anger and anguish of this painful traumatic experience had left the survivors of this horrific event with deep scars beyond repairs. The late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were a dark world for the Armenians who were held helpless and bound at the treacherous hand of the Muslim Turks of the Ottoman Empire in Turkey. The Armenian Genocide includes: the context of power of the Ottoman Empire, the plan of execution in different stages, trial, and the lack of support from their counterparts, the struggle for acceptance of the act as Genocide by Turkey government, and its refusal to acknowledge and provide support to the Armenian.
Although genocide may seem like a foreign, outdated, and barbaric concept, the rates of genocide have actually increased over the span of the 20th century. Academic scholars have taken notice and have written many detailed essays describing the events of each atrocity. For the amount of information recorded about the Armenian Genocide of 1915, it is surprising how few members of the general population are actually aware of its occurrence. Scholar Rouben P. Adalian offers his readers knowledge on this topic in his essay “The Armenian Genocide” in Centuries of Genocide: Essays and Eyewitness Accounts by Totten and Parsons. In his article, Adalian provides insight into the history of both the victims and the perpetrators of the genocide, why the
For over half a century of Rwanda’s history the Tutsi’s and Hutu tribes had internal struggles for power. It was fueled by ethnic discrimination and persecution caused by the European occupation. During world war one in 1894, Belgium occupied Rwanda as a colony and separated the Tutsi’s and Hutu’s into different classes. The Tutsi’s and Hutu’s were two people who shared the same past, they were cattle herders who were separated by name in how many cattle one owned. The Tutsi’s owned the most cattle and everyone else was Hutu. They used to live peacefully and there was no organized crime, judgment or clashes between the people. But when the Europeans first settled in Rwanda, and they saw these cattle herding people, they established the category Tutsi and Hutu as racial roles. The Germans saw the Tutsi’s as having more European characteristics like lighter skin or straighter noses and that was the first step in causing the tragedy that was to come.
The Belgians initially favored the Tutsis due to their obstructed views of race. According to the Belgians, “ The Tutsi were supposedly a Hamitic” (Encyclopedia), which indicates that Tutsi were “more Caucasian” therefore “more European”. These findings were concluded by skull measuring, and nose analysis (Gourevitch 55). As time passed, the Belgians began to emphasize the division of the two tribes.“From 1933 everyone in Ruanda-Urundi is issued with a racial identity card, defining them as Hutu (85%) or Tutsi (14%)” (HISTORY). As observed in the previous quotation, it is noteworthy that the aristocratic class (the Tutsi) were a quite large minority. This did evidently did not factor into the Belgians decision to make the Tutsi the ruling class. It also displays that race science trumps all other metrics in the imperialist eyes. The Belgians also possessed unrelenting political power within Rwanda as they were able to dispose of “a Mwami they considered overly independent and installed a new one, Mutara Rudahigwa, who had been carefully selected for his compliance”( Gourevitch

Healthy organizations require good leaders. Managers can fulfill the role themselves or hire other individuals to fill the role for them. Good leaders create loyalty by providing a vision and helping employees to reach it. Mark Leslie once stated, "If there is no vision, there is no business" (as cited in Over Processed, 2006, p. 394).
In 1914 through 1918, the Armenians were trapped in a box where they were tossed and thrown around in until they broke apart. The Turks while they were still labeled as the Ottoman Empire was in a war with Russia was afraid that one of their occupied lands, Armenia, would turn to Russia since they both were Christians. This forced the Turkish to decide it was time to completely get rid of the Armenians. Even without any complete evidence that the Armenians would betray the the Turks, Armenians were still blamed and killed. Even today, Turkey still denies they committed genocide. The massacre that took place in the Ottoman Empire between 1914-1918 should be considered genocide because it went through all eight stages of genocide
The Armenians under the Muslim Empire were unhappy and were mistreated. Although the Armenians were allowed to practice their faith freely, they had few to none legal and political rights. Despite the injustice the Armenians endured, they still were very prosperous and wealthy causing the Turkish to detest the Armenians more. Many Turks had even begun to raise suspicions on Armenian loyalty that had ultimately led to the mass murder of Armenians. During World War I, the Ottoman Empire fought alongside Austria-Germany against the Allied Powers. The military leaders were convinced that the Armenians were traitors and would shift their loyalty to Russia, a Christian nation. On April 24,1915, the Armenian Genocide had finally begun after the Turkish government arrested Armenian intellectuals and had later been killed. Many Armenians were forced out of there homes and had to walk on death marches through the desert without food and water.(“The Armenian Genocide”) “Frequently, the marchers were stripped naked and forced to walk under the scorching sun until they dropped dead. People who stopped to rest were shot. People who stopped to rest were shot.”(“The Armenian Genocide”)The Young Turks, a group of reformers had created groups that consisted of murders and other criminals.(“The Armenian Genocide”) “They drowned people in rivers, threw them off cliffs, crucified them and burned them alive. In short order, the Turkish countryside was littered with Armenian corpses.”(The Armenian Genocide”) During this period of chaos and terror, women were raped and forced to be sex slaves, children were kidnapped and many were forced to convert to Islam. The genocide had finally come to an end in 1922 and by then, more than a million people had perished because of it. (“The Armenian
After independence was granted, the first fair and free elections took place. Hutus established their dominance politically led by Hutu president Gregoire Kayibanda. In This Voice in My Heart, Tuhabonye describes his experiences saying he didn’t feel troubled by the results of a Hutu taking power, but rather afraid for the events that could follow the election as a result. He was harassed by his Hutu classmates in school about the change in political power. Also, Rwandan militants took the side of the Hutus and they started protesting Tutsi officials. Burundi, the bordering country of Rwanda had militants join the Hutus and soon fatal clashes between the two ethnic groups began. Both Rwanda and Burundi had majority Hutu population, and the “Tutsis were fighting, not just for their political lives but their literal lives”(5). Initially, Tutsis simply wanted to maintain political power, but soon they were focused on trying to stay alive. Tuhabonye goes on to retell his encounters at school with Hutus and he reveals a change in relationship with some of his classmates. He states, “we seemed powerless to stop the avalanche of retribution and revenge”(193). Violence quickly spread throughout the country and it was not long before the tide of power turned and the Tutsis were targeted by the
Most people haven’t heard of Rwanda so let me fill you in. It’s a little country in the Eastern- South of Africa. Before I get into the messy bits, let’s go back in time, Africa had been colonized by European powers. After that, Europe decided to separate Africa into 50 equal countries, within that Rwanda was formed. Germany took charge of this country but not long after Belgium took it from their hands, Belgium decided to characterized the Rwandans. There were 3 groups: Hutus, Tutsis, and Twas. The Tutsis were favored due to their more “white man” features. Hutus were always taken for granted and were never allowed to be official leaders. After generations of this happening the Hutus decided to strike back and kill of the Tutus, thus beginning
Having a past history of discrimination and jealousy towards the Tutsis because of the Belgians caused hatred within them that later on grew. The small ethnic differences they had stirred up the conflicts; however political and economical issues added on to the problem which made the problem huge. Hatred from the past with Elite Hutus wanting power and control and an economic collapse causing massive poverty added led to one of the deadliest genocides. Around a million innocent Tutsis died within the span of three to four months. I believe the Belgians discriminating the Hutus and favoring the Tutsi based on their physical appearance had the greatest impact on the starting of the Genocide because if they were treated equally from the beginning they would have no reason to hate and blame the Tutsi for their problems. The political and economic issues however, added on to the conflict and made it a much more difficult situation. No one should be discriminated for their physical looks and/or appearances because it is something they can not control. On the other hand, no matter how bad the economy or hatred is, no one should have to go through or be involved in a genocide or mass killings. It is injustice and inhumane ot be killed for reasons that are not in your control. The Rwandan genocide was a very complex conflict that has many factors that influenced
A Pew Research Center analysis titled: “A Tale of Two Fathers: More Are Active, but More Are Absent” (June 15, 2011, Pew Social & Demographic Trends Project), found that over one in four fathers (27%) with kids 18 or younger live away from at least one of their children. In 1960, only 11% of children in the U.S. lived apart from their fathers. By 2010, that share of minor children living apart from their mothers increased only modestly, from 4% in 1960 to 8...
