Percy Bysshe Shelley Percy Bysshe Shelley was born August 4, 1792 in Broadbridge Heath, England. Percy was the oldest of seven kids born to Sir Timothy Shelley and Elizabeth Pilfold. Shelley was an influential romantic poet and lyricist of his time. Even today his poems are still well known. At the age of 10, Shelley left home to attend Syon House Academy, located in West London. Later, Shelley enrolled into Eton College. At Eton College, Shelley was severely bullied by his classmates. Years later, Shelley enrolls in University College, Oxford. He wrote his first novel, Zastrozzi, and many books of poetry that were considered very suggestive. They had two children together. Shelley left Harriet before their second child was born. He later met with William Godwin’s daughter, Mary, and fell in love. Godwin didn’t approve of Shelley’s relationship with his daughter. This caused Percy, Mary, and Mary’s little sister Jane to leave. They eventually came back and Mary realized she was pregnant. When Harriet heard about this, she was very angry and sued Shelley for alimony and full custody of their children. A little after this happened, Harriet gave birth to their second child. Three months after Harriet gave birth, Mary gave birth to her and Percy Bysshe Shelley’s first child together. The infant died weeks later. He was one month away from turning 30 years old. His death happened when he drowned during a flash storm while boating. Due to him being found washed up on a beach, some speculate that he may have been murdered by an enemy that did not share his political views. His wife Mary did not attend the funeral. This was a common thing at the time for women to do at the time. His body was cremated and his ashes were buried in the Protestant Cemetery in Rome. (Biography.com) Shelley wrote during a time where romantic poetry was starting to become a popular thing to write. The events he went through in his life had a major effect on his writing. The romantic poems of his were usually written about his wife, Mary. Percy Bysshe Shelley’s writings were very reflective of the romantic poetry period. Some of his most famous works include Ozymandias, Ode to the West Wind, Queen Mab, and Love’s Philosophy. (Wiki) Love’s Philosophy is a poem written by Percy Bysshe Shelley. It was published in late 1820, two years before his death. It is most likely about his wife, Mary. The theme of the poem is love and rejection.
