Percocet: Cardiovascular System - Vessels and Circulation Percocet is considered to fall under the category of an opioid. Opioids are drugs that interact with opioid receptors which are located on the body and brain’s nerve cells (“Opioids”). Prescribed opioid pain relievers are usually safe to take when following the prescription amount suggestion. Because percocet provides a sense of euphoria along with being a pain reliever, this can cause them to be misused and abused. Along with relieving the pain, percocet can also affect the cardiovascular system by sometimes causing a widening of the blood vessels (“What Is Percocet”).
Percocet is usually prescribed to be taken orally as a pill capsule, but individuals will crush the pills up and snort them in order to feel a faster and more intense high. Snorting any type of drug can lead to significant nasal passage damage. The drug comes in contact with the blood vessels that line the nasal passage causing the vessels to constrict. Once these blood vessels constrict and cut off the nutrients that are delivered by blood, it causes the tissue to shrivel up and even possibly die. An article in the Journey of Medical

Deep vein thrombophlebitis (also known as DVT) is a condition where there is a blood clot in a deep vein, usually occurring in the legs. Hypotension is having abnormally low blood pressure. Hemorrhage is when a large amount of blood occurs due to a ruptured blood vessel. Vasodilation is the relaxation of the blood vessels which decreases blood pressure resulting in low blood pressure. Circulatory collapse is when the arteries and veins in the body stops working together possibly resulting in other illnesses such as organ failure, gangrene, or other
Many factors can increase the risk of these clots, including prolonged bed rest (such as after surgery), sitting for long periods (such as on a plane), use of birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy, pregnancy, family history of DVT, inflammatory bowel disease, and certain genetic clotting disorders. Compression stockings are also sometimes used in people who have an acute DVT, to prevent a group of symptoms known as post-thrombotic syndrome that includes leg pain and
One of the characteristics of the common disorder, and perhaps the most worrisome for the patients affected, is decreased blood flow in the atria, which is associated with and allows thrombi to form. Embolism from the atria can cause cerebrovascular accidents, which can be devastating to the affected individuals and their families.

Deep venous thrombosis(DVT) is the formation of a blood clot or thrombus in the large vein of the legs(Narani, 2010). The signs and symptoms of a lower limb DVT varies from asymptomatic to extensive ilio femoral thrombosis(Narani, 2010). The most common clinical manifestation can be sudden swelling of one limb accompanied with pain or tenderness,
If the drug is being used primarily to treat severe pain not responsive to other analgesics, in a painful terminal condition, (such as advanced widespread cancer), it may ...
Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) is a generalized term referring to a spectrum of vascular disorders that alter the structure or function of any non-coronary artery. Atherosclerosis is the most common vascular disorder affecting the peripheral arteries (Ali & Carman, 2012). Atherosclerosis, commonly known as hardening of the arteries, is a general vascular disorder that can occur in any blood vessels throughout the body. It causes a reduction in blood flow and loss of function. Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is a blood vessel disease resulting from atherosclerosis.
Opioids are used as pain relievers and although it does the job, there are adverse side effects. Opioids are frequently used in the medical field, allowing doctors to overprescribe their patients. The substance can be very addicting to the dosage being prescribed to the patient. Doctors are commonly prescribing opioids for patients who have mild, moderate, and severe pain. As the pain becomes more severe for the patient, the doctor is more likely to increase the dosage. The increasing dosages of the narcotics become highly addicting. Opioids should not be prescribed as pain killers, due to their highly addictive chemical composition, the detrimental effects on opioid dependent patients, the body, and on future adolescents. Frequently doctors have become carless which causes an upsurge of opioids being overprescribed.
A red blood cell count of 3.99, white blood cell count of 22.5, hemoglobin of 10.9, hematocrit of 33.7%, sodium level of 13, potassium level of 3.1, carbon dioxide level of 10, creatinine level of 3.24, glucose level of 200, and a BUN level of 33 were the abnormal labs. After a thorough examination, J.P. was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT). “DVT develops most often in the legs but can also occur in the upper arms.” (Ignatavicius & Workman, 2013). Due to the progression and status of J.P.’s current diagnosis, the doctor’s found it necessary to perform an above the knee amputation immediately....
They are marketed under different brands such as Demerol, Oxycontin, Tylox, Percocet, and Vicodin and can be prescribed in liquid, tablets, capsules, and patches. In the United States, opioid addiction rates have majorly increased. Between 2000-2015, more than half a million individuals have died from opioid overdose, and nearly 5 million people have an opioid dependence which has become a serious problem. The Centers for Disease Control reports that there are 91 deaths daily due to opioid abuse. Taking opioids for long periods of time and in higher doses increases the chance of getting addicted to opioids.
The study of cardio physiology was broken up into five distinct parts all centering on the cardiovascular system. The first lab was utilization of the electrocardiogram (ECG). This studied the electrical activities of the heart by placing electrodes on different parts of the skin. This results in a graph on calibrated paper of these activities. These graphs are useful in the diagnosis of heart disease and heart abnormalities. Alongside natural heart abnormalities are those induced by chemical substances. The electrocardiogram is useful in showing how these chemicals adjust the electrical impulses that it induces.
A PE usually begins as a clot in a deep vein of the leg, which is called deep vein thrombosis. This clot can break and travel through the bloodstream to the lungs and block the artery. Blood clots can form in the deep veins of the legs if blood flow is restricted and slows down. This can occur when you don’t move around for long periods of time. Some examples that can cause this are some types of surgery, during a long trip in a car or airplane, and if you must stay in bed for an extended period of time. Under rare circumstances an air bubble, part of tumor, or other tissue travels to lungs and causes ...
I would question why the acetaminophen and Percocet medications are both prescribed, because the Percocet already contains the ingredients of APAP and has enough; so adding the APAP can increase the patient’s risk of liver damage. Even though, the patient states she is taking Percocet’s but she never mentioned taking the APAP; which is good because taking APAP with Percocet can increase her likelihood of an overdose.
"When some one who has been abusing an opioid like Xanax, Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, or Dilaudid, and get off them often times if they try to start taking them again they don't realize they cant take as much as they used to and take what they were taking before and thats lead to a lot of overdoses." he said.
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is the development of a blood coagulation in a vein deep under the skin. The most widely recognized locales of profound vein clumps are the lower leg and thigh. They can likewise happen in the pelvis and arm. Reasons for a thrombus (blood clot) incorporate moderate blood stream, a harm to the coating of a vein, or having blood with an expanded propensity to cluster. Restricted development can bring about moderate blood stream, which builds the danger of DVT (Snow V, 2007). Constrained activity can happen with delayed bed rest after surgery or because of disease. Some other common names to DVT are: blood clot in the leg, Thrombophlebitis, Venous thrombosis, and Venous thromboembolism; this term is used for deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism (Snow V, 2007).
Pharmacology is a vital component in the perioperative practice. Medication use is monitored closely during the perioperative period. Preoperatively, there are certain drugs that must be discontinued prior to a surgery as they increase surgical risk, including anticoagulants, tranquillisers, corticosteroids and diuretics (Laws, 2010b). In fact, these drugs can increase the risk of respiratory depression, infection, fluid and electrolyte imbalance and increased risk of bleeding (Hamlin, 2010). Open communication is important in obtaining a medication history, and in identifying the drugs taken prior to the surgery. If any of these medications has be...
