Winning has always shown who the best is at a particular activity. Being dedicated to win is healthy competition, but when athletes are willing to “win at all costs”, that is to win at the expense of anything, like safety, negative issues begin to rise. Athletes with the mindset of “winning at all costs” can result in negative effects in a physical, social, and mental way for the athlete. Thus, athletes need to reconsider the cliché of “winning at all costs”. To start, athletes thinking of “winning at all costs” may result in negative effects relating to their physicality. First, many athletes take performance-enhancing drugs (PED’s) to make them play better at a sport, however these PED’s can physically affect athletes as well. This can lower the performance of athletes in sports where height is more important, like volleyball. Next, training is necessary in any sport to win, but athletes may train too much for the sake of victory. When athletes train, they essentially tear their muscles enough so that they can repair to grow larger and stronger. However over-training can severely tear these muscles, resulting in painful soreness for days. Although over-training may seem preventable through reasoning with the athlete, it goes beyond “winning at all costs”. The athletes that over-train feel like they are never at their best form, and so they continuously train and injure themselves. Moreover, negative physical effects may occur to athletes that continue to play through injuries. Pressure to win for a team from, coaches, teammates and parent often deter athletes from reporting
