Doctors and nurses perform specific duties to save the lives of patients who are suffering. The first concern of doctors and nurses is the well-being of their patients. I interviewed a person named Shaka for my Illness Narrative. Shaka is a 52-year-old patient, who I cared for in her home when I was working with The Medical Team over the summer of 2016. She was assigned to home care after leaving the hospital. I was her private duty caregiver, but I also developed a personal relationship with her. The chores that I did for her included escorting her to different sites, administering medication, hygiene, cleaning the house, and preparing food as needed. I chose to interview her because she has a compelling personal story and an interesting medical …show more content…
She married and had children, but her husband went to the United States to better their lives. After six years without seeing her husband, he was finally able to bring his wife and children to the U.S. in 2006. Her family moved to the United States to have a better life, get a better education, and find better jobs. She had past illnesses and various health conditions during her life in South Africa, but they did not affect her that much because her family was wealthy and she could go to the best hospitals to get the best treatment. So, her medical history in Africa was not remarkable; she did not recount suffering from any serious illnesses that would terminate her life in South Africa. She managed her health condition well enough and her medical family history did not present …show more content…
During the interview, we got to a point where she told me that if this medical situation happened in South Africa, she probably would not have survived because the healthcare system in South Africa is not well constructed. The hospital would have had poor conditions there. She thanks God the situation happened here, because the medical system here is so advanced, and with today`s medical advancement system in the US with technology and in medicine, doctors or physicians are able to cure more patients with medicine and medical procedures than in Africa. She felt that doctors here care more and give the best treatment and proper care to the patients in need. The modern technology and first-rate training of medical staff here prevented a more serious disability or even her
When we see patients, we must remember that we are not simply treating a disease. We are caring for people with lives, hobbies, jobs, families, and friends, who are likely in a very vulnerable position. We must ensure that we use the status of physicians to benefit patients first and foremost, and do what we promised to when we entered the profession: provide care and improve quality of life, and hopefully leave the world a little better than it was

Although I respect and trust nurses and doctors, I always carefully observe what is being done with myself or my family members. After watching Josie’s story and being in the process of becoming a medical assistant, I feel this story has given me an initiative to ensure patients and their families are kept safe. The generation we live in is technological, there are many resources for patients and families to utilize to educate themselves when it comes to medical conditions. Some people like to self-diagnose and it makes it harder for doctors and healthcare workers to work with those patients. This is when communication and active listening becomes especially important to work through what is fact and what is misplaced

Mona Counts works in the village of Mt. Morris, Pennsylvania. It is a medically underserved area and a HPSA (health professional shortage area). The town has an extremely poor economic base and majority of Mona’s patient population are poverty level. Mona is not worried about the money and will tell a patient to come in for a check up, regardless of whether or not they have health care. One patient said, “she is old-fashioned, she talks to you and tells you what you nee...
... joy Mrs. L got from seeing her cat. Health in this scenario is shown mostly notably when Mrs. L got relief from Morphine and stated she knew she was going to die but felt “ok for now”. Health in this case was measured by an improvement in pain and not an absence of illness. Finally, nursing in this scenario is exemplified in many ways. In the paragraph above I begin by ensuring the patient’s confidentiality. Mrs. L was placed at the center of care. I collaborated with other nurses and all those in the environment to assure the best care possible. Through direct care, teaching and advocacy I delivered the exact type of care I would wish for myself, or someone I loved, if I were in Mrs. L’s place.
A nurse’s role in our society today is exceptionally significant. Nurses are somewhat idolized and looked to as our everyday “superman”. “The mission of nursing in society is to help individuals, families, and groups to determine and achieve physical, mental, and social potential, and to do so within the challenging context of the environment in which they live and work” (“The Role of a Nurse/Midwife”). Many Americans turn to nurses for delivery of primary health care services and health care education (Whelan). In our country, there is constantly someone in need of health care. There will always be a baby being born or a person dying, someone becoming ill or growing old. Some people due to their physical and/or mental state of health are completely dependent on a nurse and wouldn’t be able to get through the simple obstacles of every day, or achieve the necessary requirements of a simple day without their aid. Not only do nurses help, and assist you when you’re sick, but also act to promote good health to others. They end...
The field of nursing provides one the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others. Nurses interact directly with patients at times of hardship, vulnerability, and loss. The nursing profession has been around for decades. Due to the contribution from historical leaders in nursing, the nurse’s role has progressed over time. Although the roles of nurses have evolved throughout the years, one thing has remained the same: the purpose in giving the best patient care.
This piece of work will be based on the pre-assessment process that patients go through on arrival to an endoscopy unit in which I was placed in during my second year studying Adult diploma Nursing. I will explore one patient’s holistic needs, identifying the priorities of care that the patient requires; I will then highlight a particular priority and give a rational behind this. During an admission I completed under the supervision of my mentor I was pre-assessing a 37 year old lady who had arrived to the unit for an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. During the pre-assessment it was important that a holistic assessment is performed as every patient is an individual with unique care needs as the patient outline in this piece of work has learning disabilities it was imperative to identify any barriers with communication (Nursing standards 2006).
For this assignment I had the pleasure sitting down with Emily Petermeier and getting an insight on what the real nursing world is like. Emily graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Nursing in May 2015, and got a job at Fairview East Bank Hospital. This interview really helped me understand what it is like to be a new nurse and the dedication that I have to have going through nursing school and throughout my career. In the interview you will see the perspective of Emily’s endeavors after college and insight for future nurses or nursing students.
The intake interview assists in establishing and diagnosing any problems the client may have. The therapist may then explain to the client what to expect during the interview, including the time duration. A good assessment/ or intake will focus on the individual situation, strength and coping mechanism. The intake form is for the client, it gives the therapist more information and an idea of who you are. The intake process that is considered of a series of questions and consent form that the client has to sign and agree to. A professional relationship between a counselor and a client begins with an intake interview.
According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, “a master’s degree program may be the first formal educational opportunity for a student to integrate prior and current learning” (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, n.d.). In order to learn how formal education can integrate into daily work, I conducted an interview with a current nurse who has completed a master’s degree in nursing with emphasis in leadership. The interview between an already prepared master’s prepared nurse was taken place verbally. This conversation is to show the time of the master’s nurse’s career, along with additional insight to understand the background of the nurse. The purpose of this paper is to discuss a master’s prepared nurse’s career, reason
The purpose for my interview with physician, Dr. Hoylond Hong, was so that I can get a better understanding of Pain Management. I have seen a lot of physicians whom don’t want to deal with prescribing narcotic medications and I can see why with everything that is going on with overdosing and misuse of the medications. The process of scheduling was a bit difficult because the physician was on a tight schedule. We had to re-schedule a couple of times.
From a psoriatic convalescent to all patients: A brief view of healthcare system and nursing role On 27th September 2016, our group (group 56) paid a visit to the Hong Kong Psoriatic Arthritis Association and interviewed a middle-aged female convalescent who had suffered from psoriatic arthritis for a few decades. Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is an immunologically triggered, chronic inflammatory arthropathy, which post long-lasting health effect without known caused and complete treatments [1]. The interviewed patient had shared her experience with PsA such as the discrimination of her friends when noticing she had skin flaking problem. Through the interview, I was inspired to have different views towards my future career, the Hong Kong healthcare
