Part of the Team
Basketball has been more than just a game in my life, it has always been a big part of my life, but it has been a part differently than what it is to others. I love everything about basketball. I have done everything from keeping the official book for a men's and women's collegiate team to washing a high school team's practice clothes and even making sure everyone has their uniforms and shoes before leaving for an away game. You don't have to be on the court, you don't have to be the one taking the winning shot or calling the play to be part of the team. I want you to think about this instead of feeling sorry for yourself because you didn't make the cut. I hope by the time you finish reading this you will realize being part of a team can come in many different positions, and anyone can be involved, if you have the desire and are responsible.
I first got involved in organized basketball when I was in the fourth grade. But I got involved in a different manner than most ball players; because of a physical disability, I could not actually participate in games and practices. However, I was never left out and I have always been part of the team; I am a basketball manager. I have loved every moment of being involved with basketball programs. I love every aspect of the game of basketball and that is why I chose to join a team by becoming a manager.
The first year of my basketball career, as a fourth grader, we were only allowed to play intramurals. All of my friends were divided into their teams, and as luck would have it, my two best friends ended up on the same team so I knew I wanted to be on that team also. ...has this organization is Notre Dame, and I'm sure you have heard of them because they are one of the most respected college's anywhere. The members say being in this club is a tremendous responsibility.
I hope by now you will realize that just because you don't have the athletic ability you need to make the college team of your preference, that you can still be a very important member of that team. If you, as in my case, have a physical disability that keeps you from physically participating in the sport of choice, that doesn't mean that the only thing you can be is a fan. I have managed for twelve years, and at the present time, I am not actually a manager, but I am considered part of the stats team for the Arkansas Lady Razorback basketball team. I have loved every minute of my involvement, and I know that I am part of any team that I help in this manner.
Some kids that have been playing for a long time got cut. I couldn’t believe it. The next day at practice coach said now that you made the team we are going to have a tryout for who is going to start and make lines according on skill and your ability to work. Every drill I was first, we ran a thing called the stair way to haven, I was first.
After playing three years in the recreational league, I naively believed that my stud-like skills were needed for bigger and better things. Unfortunately, no one told me that I would be the shortest girl at the travel team tryout, by at least 5 inches. Needless to say, I did not make the cut; however, that did not stop me from trying out again, and again, and again. I could not wrap my 11-year-old mind around why I was not qualified to earn a spot on the team. I was the go-to-girl in the recreational league. Heck, I was voted MVP every year.
“The odds of a high school basketball player making it to the “next level” to play college basketball (DI, II, or III) is slim. In fact, only 3.4% of high school players go on to play college basketball. Taking it even further, only 1.2% of college basketball players go on to get drafted in the NBA” (Winters, 2016). There are two types of players in the game. There are the kids who play basketball because they are athletic, and all they are seeking to gain is the recognition and awards. They want to be known. Those players are self-centered, they do not play for the team, and generally don’t play because they love the game. These are the types of players who don’t usually go on to play at the next level. On the other hand, there are the players that absolutely dedicate their life to the game of basketball just because they love the game. That is what coaches are looking for in a player, and that is the kind of player I am striving to be.
When I had my baby, being involved in sports at all seemed impossible. Then one day, my friend Cory from work was telling me that her daughter wanted to play soccer. She then said that she was going to coach because no one else had volunteered in her area. The only problem was that she didn't know the first thing about soccer. That gave me an idea. I played soccer in high school, so I thought I could help her, so I did.

Sports have always been my passion, from playing in middle school to managing in high school and college. My family has always been very sports oriented, and when a knee injury halted my plans of playing sports in high school, I turned to something that could keep me involved without the ability to play: managing. I started out managing my high school volleyball team when I got cut sophomore year due to my inability to play well because of my knee. Keeping stats during the matches became a fun activity for me, but I also was able to stay a part of the team and make some friends that I will keep for the rest of my life. Junior year of high school, I was approached by the varsity boys’ basketball coach. He asked if I would be willing to manage because he had heard great things from the volleyball coach and was in need of a manager. After talking to my parents and looking at my daily schedule, I agreed. This turned out to be the best decision of my high school career.

I started playing basketball in the fifth grade. In the fifth grade I was a quiet and shy little boy. I rarely talked to my teammates and kept to myself. As the years went by I learned how to communicate with my teammates and my coaches and began to break out of my shell so to speak. I started making more and more friends that also went to my junior high. Basketball helped me meet a lot of new people. By the time I left junior high I had already a core group of friends I hung out with that I met from playing basketball.
A team player can be associated to any type of profession a person participates. The dictionary defines team players as a number of people associated together in work or activity. Team players are the type of people with a tremendous personality who contribute and motivate themselves in many areas. They include the military, sports, work, and families. However, there are a few things team players are not. Let us explore these aspects closer.
Without a doubt, basketball has always been a big part of my life, in many ways. Basketball was introduced to me at my early ages, and ever since then I’ve gained a ton of love for that sport. Growing up, I wasn’t surprised to be an athlete because my parents were athletes as well. Even though both of these minerals are produced from the same element ,carbon, they have totally different characteristics. One of the most obvious difference is that Diamond is hard and Graphite is soft. The Diamond is considered to be the most hardest substance found in nature. It scores a perfect ten in hardness. Because of its hardness a tiny Diamond is used as a cutting and drilling tool in industry. Even the Greeks called the Diamond “adamas” which means unconquerable. Show business promotes commercials, print advertisements, films and shows where unbelievably perfect women are seen as the ‘ideal beauty’ The ‘ideal beauty’ controls the behavior of young girls and manipulates their perception of beauty. The term ‘ideal beauty’ is defined to be a conception of something that is perfect, especially that which one seeks to attain. Many young girls everyday are exposed to fashion and beauty advertisements that feature models who are portrayed as ‘perfect’. Due to this Technological Age, girls are exposed to many advertisements that encourage them to be like the featured models- tall, skinny, and foreign. There is also a survey conducted by Renee Hobbs, EdD, associate professor of communications at Temple University which states that, “The average teenage girl gets about 180 minutes of media exposure daily and only about ten minutes of parental interaction a day.” Moreover, media also promotes and advertises cosmetics, apparel, diet pills and exercise gears in the name of beauty and fitness, convincing girls to buy and ultimately patronize their products. Becoming very addicted with using such products can eventually lead to overdoes and becoming vainer. It may seem obvious to most of us that people prefer to look at beautiful faces.
