Synopsis
In The Parable of the Prodigal Son, there was a father with two sons. When the younger son matured, he asked for half of his father’s wealth, and he father complied. However, he went and squandered that wealth in a foreign land. After the man had depleted all his savings in irresponsible living, a famine struck his country, and he needed to find work. The son found dirty work, feeding pigs, and lived in poverty. He grew so hungry and wept because his father’s workers had food and not him. Then he cried out that he had sinned against his father and God. He believed he should not be considered his father’s son anymore. The son went looking for his father, and when his father saw him he was filled with compassion. He accepted his son with joy and provided him clothes and food and shelter. His father had rejoiced. He believed his son had died and been reborn

Through the parable, Jesus wanted to notify the Greco-Roman world what he thought of the Pharisees, lawyers, tax collectors, and rich men. Jesus was straight forward and purposeful with his symbols in the parable. Jesus wanted the Greco-Roman world to know the Pharisees were self-righteous, thus unholy, and the tax collectors and elites were sinners, thus unholy as well. Jesus wanted this parable to reach all the families in Israel and Rome. Jesus wanted this parable to teach them that the only holy figure in this story is the father who represents an all-loving and all-merciful divine figure. A deeply pious man, John considers the Bible a sublime source of moral code, guiding him through the challenges of his life. He proclaims to his kid son, for whom he has written this spiritual memoir, that the “Body of Christ, broken for you. Blood of Christ, shed for you” (81). While John manages to stay strong in the faith and nurture a healthy relationship with his son, his relationship with his own father did not follow the same blueprint. John’s father, also named John Ames, was a preacher and had a powerful effect on John’s upbringing. When John was a child, Father was a man of faith. The book of Luke, found after the books Matthew and Mark, focuses on the ministry of Jesus Christ but it also gives us a look into His birth and growth in totality. In this chapter we see a historical account of some of the journeys that Christ experienced. It is important to keep in mind that the Bible and all of its books do serve as historical accounts but each book is unique in the fact that they incorporate a theological timeline. The Bible is, conceivably, the most important book that has ever been written. It gives the world eyewitness accounts to historical events that helped not only shaped a region of the world but the whole entire world. It is nearly impossible to go through some formal societal education and have never once read a part of the bible or have heard a story that adapts from the stories within the bible. The bible has helped formed institutions, associations and so much more. By reading the Gospel of Luke we are truly reading what is meant for us to read as Christians. The principal plot in the book of Luke is the life of Jesus Christ, his sacrifice, His ability to beat death and remain perfect as the son of GOD despite being human as well. God is waiting with open arms, we need only to turn back to him like the waiting father in this parable. I try to always look at my relationship with God as my father (yes I know he his) but I mean like how you view an earthly father. I had a wonderful father growing up. Not matter the situation, good or bad, that I found myself in, I knew that I could always turn to my dad for support, understanding, advice, and he was my ultimate supporter during these times. But he did as any father really should and told me when I was wrong, or that I had really thought through my situation and was making the right decision. I knew I could always turn to him. I think that is the relationship that God seeks to have with us. In the “Prodigal”, the boy whom the speaker is addressing to yearns to accomplish his own goals by leaving his hometown behind and entering the urbanized world that is filled with endless opportunities and possibilities, including “[becoming] an artist of the provocative gesture”, “wanting the world and return carrying it”, and “[reclaiming] Main Street in a limo.” However, despite all these ambitious opportunities the boy wishes to pursue, he is ultimately unable to alter the perception of others who are the most familiar with his character. If someone mentions the word “prodigal” today, it most likely pertains to The Parable of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15:11-32, in which after a son wastes his inheritance on lavish possessions and hiring prostitutes, his father forgives him and accepts him back into the father’s house. One could compare the wastefulness of the son to the attitude of the affluent in the Roaring Twenties who, much like Jay Gatsby, threw opulent parties oblivious to the world’s growing problems.

The three parables contained in chapter fifteen of the Gospel of Luke are a tightly woven trio anchored on either side by closely related teachings. The preceding chapter gives instruction on humility and hospitality, telling the reader to open the invitation to one’s meal table to all, including the poor, the sick, and the unclean. In the following chapter the reader finds instructions for how to use wealth to benefit those same people. In the middle of these we find chapter fifteen, containing the parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the prodigal and his brother. As a part of the triplet, the parable of the lost sheep challenges the reader to not only invite the poor into one’s community, but to receive them as family with joy and celebration.
As we read through the New Testament, we come upon many instances where Jesus uses parables to teach in ways that were very unique to the day. Until this point, many had never experienced this type of teaching and it proved to be an effective method of imparting knowledge to his listeners. A parable is a story that illustrates a moral or religious lesson. During Jesus’s ministry He told many parables such as The Parable of the Sower, Parable of the Good Samaritan, The Rich Fool, Parable of the Mustard Seed, and Parable of the Lost Sheep just to name a few.
“Prodigal stands for a man who has a single equal quality that is wasting substance” (Kenneth 53). In other words, the younger son is called the prodigal son because he takes his money he received from his exchange of his inheritance, and spends it recklessly. The son sins by not only taking the money, but also becoming so greedy that he asks the father for his share of the land, which he would inherit later on. Then he gets so invested and obsessed with the money that he sins by being obsessive in his greed. In spite of the parable’s title, the prodigal son is not the theme or lesson of the parable.
What are parables of Jesus Christ? The word parable in general may mean the placing of two or more artifacts together to make a comparison or explain an ideology. This same concept could be related to the parables of Jesus Christ the son of God. Some people may choose to define these in various meanings depending on their own understanding. However, in my opinion, a parable is basically an analogy consisting of human circumstances that is accompanied with a spiritual or biblical lesson. Altogether, there are thirty-two parables; which could be found in the books of Mathew, Mark and Luke. Out of all these parables, eighteen of them are found in Luke and ten in Mathew. The eighteen parables found in Luke include, the Lost Coin, the Lost Son, the Unrighteous Steward, the Rich Man and Lazarus, the Unprofitable Servants, the Unrighteous Judge, the Pharisee and Publican, the Pounds, the Two Debtors, the Good Samaritan, the Friend at Midnight, the Rich Fool, the Watchful Servants, the Barren Fig Tree, the Chief Seats, the Great Supper, the Rash Builder, and the Rash King. The ten in Mathew include, the Laborers in the Vineyard, the Two Sons, the Marriage of the King's Son, the Ten Virgins, the Talents, the Tares, the Hidden Treasure, the Pearl of Great Price, the Draw Net, and the Unmerciful Servant. Again, the parables of Jesus Christ could be compared to a class of students with a teacher in the front. Basically Jesus Christ was the teacher and the whole world would be considered as the students. It is about a son who abandons his family to “squander his wealth in wild living” (New International Version, Luke.15.13). After losing all his wealth he recognizes the importance of family and returns home. His father lovingly welcomes him because he will always love his son, regardless of the incident. God loves all His children; even the ones that abandon Him. All He asks of us is to repent from our sins and seek Him with all our hearts.
