It shows how he put much idea and enthusiasm when writing the book, and more than masterly supported his stand, disputes and arguments all though the book. His manner of expression and stance states that we are either one of the oppressed or one of the oppressors. It has an unquestionable vocabulary level, which aides him in educating the reader not just about oppression but also about education, which, was one Freire's main principles in life. In the book, you will discover diverse theories, systems, and concepts made by Freire to enable people to build their own self and elevate their level of awareness and knowledge. One of these is to use one’s own life sufferings that are constantly experienced rather than made up events to justify issues in the education system. Freire urges people to utilize development through circumstances from everyday life and took in lessons from these circumstances as tools to improve our literacy. There is a banking system that Freire talks about that regards to men as adaptable and manageable beings. Freire even says “The more students work at storing the deposits entrusted to them, the less they develop the critical consciousness which would result from their intervention in the world as transformers of the world.” His concept on education is that the teachers in the community needs to get the minds of students more active. Fredrick Douglas and Paulo Freire have very different views on the social justice behind learning to read, however, their arguments are very similar to each other as well.
“Windowless and nasty classrooms, retarded courses, no air conditioning and can we talk bathrooms?” As citizens, the conflicts and the issues that our society deals with every day should bring awareness and a call to take action. For instance, Jonathan Kozol came up with a plan to bring consciousness to his readers by writing an article about the struggles of the Fremont High School students, in which problems such as over crowded classrooms, teachers shortage, lack of bathroom supplies, unsanitary kitchen, basic academic courses and inequality. In order to write and put together his article, he took a tour in person and found his way to successfully achieve his goal by documenting students, teachers, and other staff members’ testimonies in which one of his main focuses was Mireya. Furthermore, Kozol’s real facts on the matter successfully make a statement on social and racial inequalities, in which the main purpose of his article was to capture the attention of his audience to find resolutions on the matters that affects a child’s future.
Freire disagrees with the traditional form of education when he says, “Oppression...is necrophilic; it is nourished by love of death, not life. The banking concept of education, which serves the interests of oppression is also necrophilic” (Freire 261). Freire argues that learning via oppression is the death of learning. Oppression is necrophilic, as Freire says, because, instead of appreciating intelligence, people hang onto the death of language and education. To some this may not seem important, but there is a death of learning and the practice of learning. The Banking Concept is not the way to teach. Oppression in teaching is more prevalent than thought. An example of this is when people only call attention to pitfalls and negativity instead of cherishing positivity and successes. This is not a beneficial environment for the majority of people. Throughout The Lesson Toni Cade Bambara illustrated how education is the means by which one can escape out of poverty. This was not done in a classroom structured environment it took place on a sunny afternoon field trip in which the children on the trip was confronted with their own deficiency. There was resistance but as each individual longed for a toy in the store the apparent realism displayed itself. The extremely high price for the toys was an amount that their families could live on for a while. Each child was put in a place where he/ she had to examine themselves, their social conditions and their future. Bambara used race through social status, economic inequality, and literary epiphany to identify the hidden realities in each child life.
Newman says that the scope of education should broaden and encourage more learning outside of the career track, while Freire says how the material is learned should be broadened and laid out where it is learned for its entirety and not just its basic ideas. They feel that “the learned professions altogether... [are] the most popularly beneficial and… most intimately divine of all human pursuits” (Newman, 57). Simply said, education is something of high importance that should be desired and acquired by all. If one does not embrace education, he or she will not gain knowledge or understand its importance. Fredrick Douglass, a famous slave that worked to gain knowledge, and ultimately helped abolish slavery understands this concept. In his biography, “Learning to Read,” he describes his struggle of learning to read and write. He says, “I wished to learn… [and] after a long, tedious effort for years, I finally succeeded in learning” (Douglas, 50). As a slave, being educated was a difficult task, but Douglass understood its importance and desired to pursue it. At first, he despised, the education, “while they [(the arguments in the Columbian Orator)] relieved me of one difficulty, they brought on another even more painful than the one of which I was relieved,” but it eventually lead to his understanding of “abolition” and helped him free “[him]self and fellow-slaves” (48,49). The education Douglass learns from the Columbian Orator and local newspapers, among other places, is a prime example of liberal knowledge. He learned it “for the sake of knowing it.” Douglass’s example solidifies Newman’s idea that liberal education is valuable because it is proven to have “value and dignity” (Newman, 58). His example also exemplifies Freire’s point that “Liberation is a praxis: the action and reflection of men and women upon their world in order to transform it” (65). Freire believes that one

Mandela’s says that education is very powerful, you can use education to change the world or your life. This means that education is important in life and we all need a good education to succeed in life. In our society education is failing because schools demand too much for a great career. For example, schools take too much time to graduate and after we finish school there is no guaranteed employment. Therefore, students are dropping out of school and are going to the workforce or military. We could make education better for students

Education is a topic that can be explored in many ways. Education is looked at in depth by both Richard Rodriguez in his essay, “The Achievement of Desire”, and by Paulo Freire in his essay, “The ‘Banking’ Concept of Education.” After reading both essays, one can make some assumptions about different methods of education and exactly by which method Rodriguez was taught. The types of relationships Rodriguez had with his teachers, family and in life were affected by specific styles of education.
His works focuses on the awakening of consciousness in people as a way to empower people to believe they deserve change and can achieve it. Freire argues that the development of critical awareness is essential in order for transformational politics to take place in society. He discusses how in order to facilitate in the development of critical awareness of the oppressed, that the oppressed must acknowledge that they are indeed oppressed. This is done through the praxis method, a process where the oppressed has discussion about their lives, realities, and norms with a facilitator. After the discussion with the facilitator they reflect on their experiences and recognized the oppression they’ve experienced. They are now aware of the unequal power dynamics they’ve experience, and can action to change the system of
Many great minds believe that education is a powerful tool. Investing in your education is the most valuable and most rewarding thing a person can do to secure their future. Influential people who have brought positive changes to the world have said: “The investment in knowledge pays the best interest”. (Franklin). “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. (Nelson Mandela). “A brighter future starts with an education”. (Montgomery).
Education has always been in existence in one form or another. As each child is born into this world regardless of who or where they are born, life lessons immediately begin. He/she will learn to crawl, walk, and talk by the example and encouragement of others. Although these lessons are basic in the beginning they evolve as the child grows. However, the core learning method of a child does not change. Learning from others, they will watch, listen, and then act for themselves. Thomas Jefferson believed that an education would lead men and women to the ability to be self-governed and become positive contributors to society (Mondale & Patton, 2001). Today, we can see how true this is by the examples of others. Those that are given the opportunity for education are more likely to find jobs and develop skills that not only improve a community, but influence the economic growth of their nation (Ravitch, Cortese, West, Carmichael, Andere, & Munson, 2009, p. 13). On the other hand, if an education is not provided to individuals, they can become a hindrance to that nation’s growth.
Education has always been at the core of our society. Education, along with society, continue to not only teach the young community, but model us into so called “civilized citizens”. A civilized citizen, is one who continues to behave and move along the path of human advancement. As a student, the educational systems will teach you the following: what to do, how to act, and how to think. Coming from a student’s perspective, schools are becoming more military based. For example, people within the military wear uniforms. Do all civilized citizens have to wear uniforms? The change in education is not through books, but the attitude of what freedom has allowed in the past years, violence in the school systems.

Pedagogy of the Oppressed is a nonfiction book by Brazilian author Paulo Freire. The book is best known for its philosophical concepts on oppression as it pertains to education. Since the book 's first publication in 1978 it has become a worldwide staple for educators and activists alike, who strive to conquer the problem of oppression in its many facets of life. Pedagogy of the Oppressed is an eye-opening and life changing book that should be a requirement for all future educators in order to ensure success in creating a liberating and humanizing education system.
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world;” this simple statement by South Africa’s first democratically elected president, Nelson Mandela, expresses a fundamental truth of the world- something as simple as education can change everything. A constantly changing geopolitical environment has continued to place increasing amounts of emphasis on obtaining a post-secondary school education. Despite this, as many as 16% of all Americans ages 16-24 drop out before completing a secondary school education and obtaining a diploma.(1) The question which few dare to consider, which I now find myself faced with, is simple: how my education is the key to a successful future. To completely grasp the extent which my education may impact the future, in a positive manner, two things must fall into consideration- how education will ensure a successful future for myself, and how it may enable me to ensure a successful future for those around me.
