Recommended: Obesity in america
Introduction
Obesity is a growing issue across the United States. A study in 2009 showed that 35% of Americans were obese (Ogden, Carroll, Kit, & Flegal, 2012). Those within 35% are not the ones only suffering the effects related to obesity. In 1998, the medical costs of obesity were approximately 78.5 billion dollars. That number had risen to 147 billion as of 2006, and half of the costs were paid by Medicare and Medicaid (Finkelstein, Trogdon, Cohen, & Dietz, 2013). Obesity is defined as a weight higher than a healthy weight for a certain height. Obesity is determined by body mass index, which is calculated using height and weight, which is directly tied to the amount of body fat. A total BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese (Center for Disease Control, 2012). Proper Crossfit training promotes overall health and fitness, and could be a solution to the growing issue of obesity.
History
Crossfit was founded by former gymnast Greg Glassman in Santa Cruz, California in 1995 (Reinink, 2013). A short five years later, a company was born in 2000 known as Crossfit. Crossfit was originally popular among firefighters, police officers, first responders, and military members looking to improve their fitness (Sullivan, n.d.). Crossfit quickly began to gain popularity through the social media, causing gyms to begin to pop up across the United States and around the world. The number of gyms across the globe grew from 12 in 2005 to over 5,000 gyms in 2012 (Reinink, 2013). Crossfit eventually held its first Reebok Crossfit Games in 2007, featuring 70 of the worlds’ most physically fit athletes competing for a grand prize of 500 dollars. In the most recent Crossfit games, there were 70,000 athletes competing for 250,000 dollars (Sullivan, 2013...

"LA Fitness grew out of three clubs, each owned by one of the founders. In 1990 Fred Turock, Jeremy Taylor and David Turner decided to get together to jointly manage these clubs, with the aim of building up a network of gyms with first class facilities. In 1996 they created the LA Fitness brand and the following year they joined the top ten health and fitness club operators, catering to a wide variety of people of all shapes and sizes and with a huge range of goals. In 1999 the growth and success of the LA Fitness group led to a listing on the London Stock Exchange. In 2005 the team decided they needed more control - they wanted to make sure LA Fitness could continue to provide affordable membership and a fun environment for its growing band of members. LA Fitness now has more than 88 clubs and over a quarter of a million members all over the United Kingdom" (LA Fitness, 2007).
Estimated market share: 3.6%. With over 700 fitness clubs in North America, LA Fitness emphasizes multipurpose sports facilities that frequently include swimming pools, basketball courts, racquetball courts and indoor tracks alongside traditional weightlifting and cardio equipment. Founded in 1984 and headquartered in Irvine, California, LA Fitness operates 30 locations across Canada. The company consistently ranks in Club Industry Magazine’s Top 100 Health Clubs rankings and according to this list, is one of the only global fitness companies that generate over $1.0 billion in revenue. As an upscale fitness club, LA Fitness commands a relatively high market share when considering that they only have 30 locations
Sport aerobics is a new exiting performance sport, and like any new sport, is seeking recognition and acceptance as a valuable and worthwhile competitive activity. It is said however, that Sport Aerobics will always struggle for popular support because of pre-existing stereotyped views of sport in Australian society. The purpose of this essay is to challenge stereotyped views of sport in Australian society in order to increase participation in Sport Aerobics. To do this a proposed strategy will be implemented at Nambour High School to challenge stereotyped views of sport and breakdown social barriers to the participation in Sport Aerobics. This strategy involves including Sport Aerobics as a compulsory activity in the junior school physical
In ancient Greece and ancient Rome, Herodicus first combined sports with health. He is the reason that people realized that exercise and a good diet help better our health. With these realizations, sports training and athletic competitions became very popular and led to the first Olympic Games that took place in Athens, Greece in 1896. These competitions made coaches and fans realize how important and needed it was to stretch and warm up before training events. They wanted to find ways to prevent injuries and also treat them immediately when they occurred during events. The phrase sports medicine was not thought of until the 1928 Olympics in Switzerland which was where the First International Congress of Sports Medicine had their first meeting and became an organization. The First International Congress of Sports Medicine is an international board that is associated with all five continents and promotes research to help optimize health, strength, nutrition, and perfo...
With America’s obesity rate on the rise a CrossFit gym that welcomes beginners, thoroughly teaches and explains each exercise and can offer a group atmosphere that’s welcoming to individuals who have never worked out before could help decrease the obesity rate. The group aspect of CrossFit is beneficial because it’s a motivator to keep attending workouts and to reach the goals you have personally set. Attending a CrossFit gym could also be a motivator because not only is the coach pushing them to get through the workout but the other members of the class are pushing each
Exercise Science is a field of work that is valued by many. There are different paths for different kind of people whether they are interested in personal training, physical therapy, or even some kind of sports coach. The route I would like to take would be Exercise Science for Athletic Training. I want to be an Athletic Trainer because growing up, I loved playing and watching sports. I played baseball for about 2 years, ran track for 3, and played basketball my entire life. After my high school career, I knew that I could not stay involved in sports because all of the injuries I have experienced so I decided I wanted a job that is behind the scenes but still rooted in athletics.
These masterminds are Greg Glassman and Dave Castro. Greg Glassman was the first person to create the sport of Crossfit, but it was Dave Castro who brought it it’s popularity and made Crossfit the sport it is today. The buzz about Crossfit began in 2007 when Castro hosted the first Crossfit games on his family farm in Aromas, California. This event was nothing like what the games are today, “We talked about it and we wanted CrossFit events, people camping and just having a big party. It was a small event; we just invited the best that we knew in the CrossFit community, and in July, we had our first-ever Games.” (Myser). With 2016 being the 10th Crossfit games, the idea of a big party is long gone. Now athletes are making Crossfit a career in hopes of winning the games, claiming the title of “Fittest on Earth” and winning $250,000. With the image of the Crossfit games changing, so are the generalizations about the sport. These include, “Joining CrossFit is like joining a cult,” “Everyone Gets Seriously Injured,” “It’s All Like the Games” and “It’s Only for Crazy-Fit Folks” (Fetters). Without actually being a member of the sport it is easy to see how these misconceptions could be perceived as true, but if you are a member of the sport you would see that this is not the case. When I was an outsider to the
The founder of Crossfit, Greg Glassman, has made “possibly one of biggest fitness trends in the world” (Wang, 2016). As it has been introduced to over “120 countries,” it has given other fitness centers such as the Rock Island Fitness and Activity Center a run for their money (Wang, 2016). I, myself, was involved in the Crossfit community and very easily became hooked to the workouts, meal plans, and the overall mindset of program. When becoming a member at a Crossfit gym, individuals gain all of the benefits and more that you would if you were to belong to a gym such as the RIFAC. Crossfit is such a popular trend in today’s world because the workouts are already designed and a meal plan is provided. In a sense, this Crossfit membership allows individuals to do little to no work. This corporation has caused many Americans, including myself, to switch from the normal gym setting and jump on the current Crossfit trend. As Glassman had previously stated, Crossfit has "broken the back of the fitness industry" (Wang, 2016). When I started doing Crossfit, I kept my membership at the Rock Island Fitness and Activity Center, but to no surprise only attended the Quad City Crossfit Motown. If this community of Crossfitters continues to grow as rapidly as it has over the recent years, it could continue to become a huge threat to facilities like the Rock Island Fitness and Activity Center. If enough people were to switch their memberships to fitness centers like the RIFAC, YMCA, and Planet Fitness to local Crossfit communities the amount of money these fitness centers would lose could put them out of business. Due to everyone’s interest in Crossfit, they would not be making enough money to keep their facility safe, up to date, and appealing for all of their amenities. The Rock Island Fitness and Activity Center would not be able to treat all their risks because of the loss in business and lack of money. As I
Gary and Diane Heavin opened their first Curves in the United States in 1992. The two designed a thirty minute workout for women, and created a comfortable; women only, place to exercise. Franchising of Curves started in 1995, and within ten years it became the world’s largest fitness franchise and the tenth largest of all franchise companies in the world. There are over 10,000 locations in 44 countries and most of the success was through word of mouth (“Curves Weight Loss Plan”).
Obesity in the United States continues growing alarmingly. Approximately 66 % of adults and 33 % of children and teenagers in the US are overweight. Obesity is the result of fat accumulated over time due to the lack of a balanced diet and exercise. An adult with a BMI (body mass index) higher than thirty percent is considered obese (Whitney & Rolfes, 2011, pg. 271).
Obesity is a global problem (Tremolieres 1973; WHO 2000) (6). It increases numerous health risks including coronary heart disease, hypertension, stroke (WHO 2000) (7) and is a major risk factor for musculoskeletal pain (Nantel, Mathieu and Prince, 2011) (8) and osteoarthritis of weight bearing joints (WHO 2000; Felson et al, 2000) (9). Obesity rates are growing high every year and in the last 15 years twofold increase is recorded (10). Obesity is categorised on body mass index (BMI). Body mass index is used to measure obesity and is calculated by dividing a person’s weight (in kilograms) by the square of their height (in metres). Overweight is taken as BMI of 25 to 29.9kg/m2 and BMI...
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention categorizes overweight and obese people by applying the height and weight of a person to evaluate the Body Mass Index (BMI). For example, if a person's height is 5'9", weighs 124 lbs and their BMI is below 18.5, they are considered underweight. If a person with the same height (5'9) weighs 169 to 202 lbs and their BMI is 25.0 to 29.9, they are considered overweight. Lastly, an adult who is 5'9" and weighs 203 lbs or more and their BMI is higher than 30, is considered obese.
The healthcare community defines obesity as being 20 percent or more over a person?s ideal body weight, which is based on their height (?U.S. Health Professionals?? np). Usually this is 100 pounds or more over their ideal body weight. Researchers found that the two main causes of obesity are the overabundance of food and people?s sedentary lifestyles (?U.S. Health Professionals?? np). Other causes include genetics, lifestyle choices and environmental factors. These alarming statistics have prompted many to seek a solution for a problem that is clearly not going to go away by itself.

The official definition of obesity, is having a BMI of greater than 29.9. (Obesity and overweight). For example for a 5’10” male, a weight of 160lbs would yield a BMI of 23.0. Perfectly within the BMI range of healthy weight, 18.5- 24.9. But if that 5’10” male weighed say 230lbs, they would have a BMI of 33.0, and would be considered Obese.
