The book I read was called the Churchill Club by Phillip Hoose, and the book contains of 198 pages. The main characters of the story are the Churchill Club. The boys in this club are Eigil, Mogens F, Borge, Knud, Uffe, Helge, Jens, and Mogens T. The story takes place in two cities that are located in Denmark. The two main cities include Aalborg and Odense. Both of the cities have been taken over by the Nazis. The main conflict of the story is when Knud and his brother, Jens, start a club and they go around stealing German war equipment. They stole rifles, guns, grenades, and they sabotaged tanks. The story is told in two points of views. The first one is told in the author’s point of view and the second is told in Knud’s point of view. …show more content…
The rising action starts off when the Churchill Club is formed and they make fun of the Nazis by destroying their equipment. The Danish King, Christian X allowed Germany to occupy Denmark and take control of the government. When this happened, the Nazis changed the way of life of people, schools, and laws. In Odense, Knud sabotaged a lot of Nazi property. They named themselves the Royal Air Force, or (RAF). When they moved to Aalborg, that’s when the Churchill Club was created. The leaders of the club were Knud and his brother Jens. The eight boys in the club used blue paint to smear the saying “war profiteer,” on stores and homes of Danes that were siding with the Nazis. The boys did a lot of mischief such as stealing, cutting down telephone lines, sabotaging, and more. The Churchill Club were very brave and strong because they stood up to the Nazis. The climax of the story is when two boys from the Churchill Club went into a cafe and stole a man’s rifle. A woman saw them and she reported them to the police, but they didn’t get caught . A while later, the woman saw the whole Club standing in the open and she reported them to the police. This time the club got caught and they were put behind bars. After they were put in jail, they were sent to court, and in court they were said to have been guilty. After court, they were taken to a prison called King Hans Gade's Jail. The club spent a long time in jail, and some members were jail longer than others. In jail the boys read books, drew paintings, and they had school. The boys tried different ways to escape but they didn’t succeed. Life in prison was very boring and depressing for the Churchill Club. After they were put in prison, gossip raged throughout the city.
People and other kids that knew the members of the Churchill Club were in shock. They were surprised that these boys were not afraid to stand up to the Nazis. Articles, newspapers, and books were written about these boys and how they stood up for their country as activists. The club was inspired the by Winston Churchill and they wanted to be an image of him. The final prison they were taken to was called Nyborg Prison. After they were put there, they eventually were set free and allowed to go home. When Knud and Jens were freed, they went to Odense to celebrate their freedom. After their celebration, they returned back to Odense where Knud found a job. Knud made a new friend named Karl. He attended Copenhagen University and he stayed with Knud since he had nowhere to stay in Aalborg. Karl worked as a reporter and he reported information in code to the British, during the war. One day, when Karl was running up a staircase, from the German soldiers, he was surrounded by them. He shot two officers and then he shot himself in the head. After this tragic event, Knud was very sad and …show more content…
emotional. At the end of the book, the Churchill Club split up and went into their own different paths.
Some members of the club got themselves into more trouble and some boys went back to school. Knud worked at a company where they moved weapons around Aalborg and they got gun training. His brother Jens, attended Copenhagen University. Some boys were also caught doing bad things by German Soldiers so they were put in jail again. After they got out of prison most of the club members had bad dreams of the the prison and terrifying memories. On May 4, 1945, Denmark was independent again because the Nazis surrendered. This event was called Liberation Day. People were out on the streets celebrating, singing, and dancing. The Churchill Club got to meet Winston Churchill and they were honored by him. This event was very important to the club because Winston Churchill was their hero and he inspired them to be activists. The story ended with this fascinating event that honored the Churchill Club and made them
heroes. In conclusion, I would like to say that this was one of the best books I have ever read. I loved that Knud wrote about his experiences and that made the book very interesting to read. I would recommend this book to people that like historical nonfiction and books about World War Two. I think that this book is mainly for kids over the age of twelve because there was a lot of violence and I think it could be a little confusing since there are two point of views. The way the story was told was fascinating and the plot was very descriptive. This book made an impact me because it inspired me to be brave, strong, fearless, and confident. If you ever get the chance to read this book take good notes and connect well with the story.
Dieter, a fifteen year old German soldier, is going into war even though his parents don’t want him to. The main character in this story is a Jewish girl named Alicia. When the book starts she is ten years old, she lives in the Polish town of Buczacz with her four brothers, Moshe, Zachary, Bunio, and Herzl, and her mother and father. The Holocaust experience began subtly at first when the Russians began to occupy Buczacz. When her brother Moshe was killed at a “ Boys School” in Russia and her father was gathered up by German authorities, the reality of the whole situation quickly became very real. Her father was taken away shortly after the Russians had moved out and the Germans began to occupy Buczacz.
Strategy is about making choices, trade-offs; it's about deliberately choosing to be different.- Micheal Porter. In wednesday wars by Gary D. Schmidt you can see Holling transform from a boy to a man. He was insecure about himself and didn’t want to end up like his dad. Friendship is a necessity throughout life whether it is during elementary school or during adulthood. Some friendships may last a while and some may last for a year; it depends on the strength of the bond and trust between the two people. In the novel A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the main characters, Gene and Finny, did not have a pure friendship because it was driven by envy and jealousy, they did not feel the same way towards each other and they did not accurately understand each other.

He gets send to a Russian hospital and meets a nurse named Tamara. He falls in love with her but then one day the hospital is bombed and he has to escape with her and out of Russia. The story comes to an end with Erik and Tamara escaping Europe and making to over the Atlantic ocean to the United States to have kids and live the rest of there lives.
This connects to the theme ¨Speak up because you never know what might happen¨ and shows how if they were would have spoke up and suck together things could may be different. He said, ¨When the Nazis came for the communists, I remained silent: I was not a communist.¨(Niemoller, 1,2,3). Also, ¨When they came for me, there was no one left to speak out.¨(Niemoller, 13,14). This is an clear examples of the theme and explains it
Pennies for Hitler is a realistic an dramatic story written by Jackie French in the setting of Germany around the time before ww2 as it tells the story of a boy who has been separated from his family because of an dramatic event during an assembly where his dad and other people were supposedly killed. The whole story is 309 pages long along with some other pages for epilogue, authors opinion and others, 309 pages isn’t much but is not little either. Along with the history you must know before reading I recommend this book for people ages 13 and over.
Power, the perception of superiority over another human, is the source of many conflicts between people. Feeling inferior causes people to act beyond their normal personality. John Knowles strongly demonstrates this point in his work, A Separate Peace. In the relationship between Finny and Gene, Gene sets himself up to be inferior in the balance of power which motivates him to act irrationally to take power back from Finny.
The American Library Association defines a challenge to a book as, “an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based on the objections of a person or group” (“About Banned). A Separate Peace by John Knowles was one of the many challenged books of its time; it was ranked sixty-seventh on the American Literature Association’s list of most challenged classic novels The book continues to be challenged all over the country and in 2013 it is ranked thirty-fifth on the summer of banned books list .(ALA). A Separate Peace chronicles the life of a boy named Gene Forrester, a student of the prestigious Devon School in New Hampshire. In Gene’s first year at Devon. "There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better for worse as his portion. It is harder because you will always find those who think they know what is your duty better than you know it. It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude." (Ralph Waldo Emerson) A Separate Peace (1959) written by John Knowles, expresses the true struggle to respect ones individuality. In 1942 at a private school in New Hampshire Gene Forrester became good friends with his roommate, Finny. He envies Finny for his great Athletic ability. In spite of the envy, Gene and Finny do everything together and one day for fun they decide to jump out of a tree into the river. After that they form the Super Suicide Society, the first time they jumped being their reason for formation. During one of their meetings they decide to jump off at the same time. One night, some of the other guys from Devon School woke Gene and Finny up in the middle of the night. They are suspicious of the "accident." They conduct a trial to blame Gene for what has happened to Finny. Eventually Finny gets upset in the midst of argument and runs out. He ends up tripping and falling down the stairs, and breaking his healed leg allover again. It was a cleaner break this time but they still have to set it. Gene confesses to Finny that he bounced him out of the tree. While setting the break there are complications and Finny dies. The story takes place through the eyes of a German infantryman named Paul Baumer. He is nineteen and just joined up with the German army after high school with the persuasion of one of his schoolteachers, Mr. Kantorek. Paul recalls how he would use all class period lecturing the students, peering through his spectacles and saying: "Won't you join up comrades?"(10). Here was a man who loved war. He loved the "glory" of war. He loved it so much as to persuade every boy in his class to join up with the army. He must have thought how proud they would be marching out onto that field in their military attire.
When he killed his mother and her lover, he thought he was doing the right thing. Karl believed that if you have to sacrifice to do the right thing, then you should do it. Karl was locked away in a “nut house” for the next 25 years for rehabilitation and correction. After Karl’s release, he quickly made a new friend, Frank. The young boy accepted Karl without question because he seemed to be more childlike than a man.
The heavily proclaimed novel “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak is a great story that can help you understand what living in Nazi Germany was like. Throughout the story, the main character, Liesel goes through many hardships to cope with a new life in a new town and to come to the recognition of what the Nazi party is. Liesel was given up for adoption after her mother gave her away to a new family, who seemed harsh at first, but ended up being the people who taught her all the things she needed to know. Life with the new family didn’t start off good, but the came to love them and her new friend, Rudy. As the book carried along, it was revealed that the Hubermanns were not Nazi supporters, and even took in a Jew and hid him in their basement later on in the book. Liesel became great friends with the Jew living in her basement, Max, who shared many similarities which helped form their relationship. Both of
Karol Jozef Wojtyla was born in Wadowice, Poland on May 18, 1920, shortly after Marshal Jozef Pilsudski defeated the Soviet Red Army to gain Polish independence. Like most young boys, Karol enjoyed an active childhood, playing soccer and swimming often, although he was most known for his remarkable intelligence and respect at a very young age. When he was eight years old, his mother, Emilia, died of an infection of the heart, and shortly afterward, his only brother, a physician, contracted scarlet fever from a patient and passed away. When learning of the deaths of his mother and brother, witnesses recalled young Karol’s response to the news to be a simple remark: “Such was God’s will.” By the time he was 21, Hitler had already occupied his homeland, ending Poland’s only period of independence between 1772 and 1989. Shortly after the Nazi invasion, Karol’s father, Karol Senior, also passed away after a prolonged illness, leaving 20 year old Karol without family. (Vatican Online)
