This is the case, for example, of Edgar Allan Poe’s poem “Annabel Lee” and Emily Dickinson’s poem “Because I could not stop for Death.” Both poems focus on the same theme of death, but while Poe’s poem reflects that death is an atrocious event because of the suffering and struggle that it provokes, Dickinson’s poem reflects that death is humane and that it should not be feared as it is inevitable. The two poems have both similarities and differences, and the themes and characteristics of each poem can be explained by the author’s influences and lives.

Medea is a tragedy written by acclaimed Greek playwright Euripides.fortunately, had the opportunity to view last night's performance. Euripides cleverly uncovers the reality of Ancient Greek society, shining a light on the treatment of women and the emotions and thoughts that provoked during their time in society. As they were voiceless, Euripides acted as a voice. The scene is set during a male- dominated society, Medea the protagonist challenges the views and chooses to ignore the normality of civilisation. Treated as an outsider her passion for revenge conquers the motherly instincts she possesses, provoking a deep hatred and sparking revenge towards her once loved family.
One primary element of death is the experience of dying. Many of of us are scared of the thought of death. When we stop and think about what death will be like, we wonder what it will feel like, will it be painful, will it be scary? In Emily Dickinson's poem Because I Could Not Stop for Death, she focuses on what the journey into her afterlife will be like. Dickinson uses the first person narrative to tell her encounter with death. The form that she uses throughout the poem helps to convey her message. The poem is written in five quatrains. Each stanza written in a quatrain is written so that the poem is easy to read. The poem is cast as an invective by a male speaker who generalizes about women and refers to them as “they.” This set of faults shapes the stereotype of “woman” that Bogan herself referred to irritably in several of her essays. The speaker’s harsh tone reduces toward pity, for women’s habits of using their own compassion against themselves, but he does not speculate on the causes of the many flaws in women. She inherited the Victorian and Romantic opinion that used the absurdities of emotion and intellect to woman and man, and then elevated those similar suggestions to the position of natural law.
In conclusion, the poem “Medusa” challenges subordinate traits of women. Duffy strips both the female protagonist and the male character of their names and titles in the poem thereby making them equal. She also illustrates women as domineering shown by the defeat of the male personae. This is Duffy conveying the fact that women are as valued as men regardless of stereotypical attributes and concepts of society.

Culture creates difference in gender through social issues such as marriage, education, childbearing and employment. Women in many of today’s cultures are represented by the roles they choose rather than have imposed on them, although sexism is an ongoing issue presented in everyday life. Medea has little choice on her represented role due to society in that period of time. She uses her manipulative ability and cleverness to get what she wants. Her life is made difficult due to society’s restrictions and is stereotyped into many things in which she is not. This clearly shows that women’s lives are represented by the roles they either choose regarding social restrictions or the roles they have imposed on them.
Emily Dickinson is one of the most famous authors in American History, and a good amount of that can be attributed to her uniqueness in writing. In Emily Dickinson's poem 'Because I could not stop for Death,' she characterizes her overarching theme of Death differently than it is usually described through the poetic devices of irony, imagery, symbolism, and word choice.

She portrays death as a gentleman that surprises her with a visit. Emily illustrates everyday scenes in a life cycle. While her metaphors explore death in an immutable way, her lines often contain as much uncertainty as meaning.

In the poem “Because I could not stop for death” she is able to create a clear and crisp image for the audience that makes it very clear what is going on. Even after only one read through it can be easy to pick up on over 50% of her imagery and metaphors, which is not always the easiest to do with poetry since the writers are usually limited to smaller amounts of dialogue for the audience to infer from. This is also abundantly clear after reading another poem of hers called “Success is counted Sweetest”, where she creates the clear image of a solider who was wounded in battle that his side ultimately won.
