Opportunities are interesting. Most of the time, they appear and then disappear before we even realize what’s happening. For me, a missed opportunity has mysterious powers. This thing that I wasn’t even focused on has the ability to drain my energy, make me eat lots of bad food, and then leave me convinced that it wasn’t good for me in the first place. I mean, what is that? Because more times than not, I find myself reliving the past. Going on to play the what-if game that has the ability to bring about more nostalgia than is probably healthy.
Recently, this response was triggered by a book. Different? Trust me… I know. It’s not just any book though. It’s Malcom Gladwell’s, “Outliers: The story of success.” You’re probably thinking, that sounds like a really boring title that should only trigger a putting down the book response. But, before you judge a book based on its title, hear me out. Simply put, this is a novel about opportunities. Which, if you were paying attention, is a topic I have struggled with in the past. Especially, if they fall into the missed category. And, if you are human, I am sure you have to.

Ranging from The Beetles to Bill Gates, everyone has a successful story made up of opportunities. Opportunities. Not in a follow this magic formula type of way either. In a specific, tailored to them, wouldn’t be where there are now without it, type of way. Another key point to that Gladwell introduces is the idea that 10,000 hours is the magic number. That practicing something correctly for about 10,000 hours is what it takes to be considered a true expert.
