Othello Essay

A person’s characteristic can be determined at the end of one’s life. Shakespeare is able to test this theory in his play, Othello. Shakespeare’s Othello presents the audience with the subliminal warfare between good and evil. The evil within the play will cause Othello’s downfall and is exemplified through Iago, who confesses that it his “nature’s plague/ to spy into abuses and oft [his] jealous” and is cunning, deceitful and plotting (3.3.171-172). At the same time, the good within Iago will cause his own downfall. With the use of topics such as race and jealousy as catalysts, the true personalities of Othello and Iago are reveled as being either good or evil.
Iago uses the week mind of Othello to his advantage and plants an idea in his head that will consume him and take over until he has full control of him. Iago’s jealousy stems from Othello’s marriage of Desdemona, a white woman and the fact that Othello is of a higher rank than he is. In an attempt to sabotage Othello’s marriage with Desdemona, Iago makes Othello jealous of Cassio.
“O, beware, my lord, of jealousy!
It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock
The meat it feeds on. That cuckold lives in bliss
Who, certain of his fate, loves not his wronger;
But O, what damnèd minutes tells he o’er
Who dotes, yet doubt; suspects, yet strongly loves!” (3.3.195-200)
This quote by Iago is significant for its accurate description of jealousy. The destructiveness of the monster is self-created and “feeds on” Othello’s heart. Simultaneously, Othello feels guilty for being jealous of Cassio (without a concrete reason) and that shame that builds up in Othello will eventually be unleashed in the form of anger. Without having to doing much Iago, must wait as the insatiab...

Good in Othello is defined as forgiving, innocent, unsuspecting and honest, while evil is defined as deceitful, manipulating, cunning and dishonest. Iago is the epitome of evil. He uses Othello’s innocence to his advantage and although Othello has been “eaten up with passion”, Iago is also passionately jealous of Othello. However, Iago’s downfall is due to his intense jealousy and results in his trust in Emilia. Eventually, both good and evil fail and neither succeed. Perhaps Shakespeare is trying to send a message to the audience here - a message that suggests that all there is good and bad in everyone; the bad brings out the good and the good brings out the bad. There must be a moderation in our characteristics, a moderation in which we can trust or how far is too far: these are ideas that both Antigone and Beowulf knew all too well.
