Osmosis and Diffusion are two important key concepts that helps the cell as a whole functional. Diffusion is simply the movement of a substance from an area that has higher concentration to an area that has a smaller amount of concentration. Osmosis is the total opposite of Diffusion; Osmosis consists of a solvent being able to pass freely through the membrane of a less concentrated solution to a higher concentrated solution.
Diffusion means to spread out, and in the process of diffusion it is actually spreading out the substances to make the molecule more proportionate. Diffusion occurs throughout the human body significantly, with the absence of diffusion cells and tissues would become unhealthy and die off simply because they’re not gaining the proper nutrients that are essential for survival. One place where diffusion takes place is in the respiratory system, oxygen that human beings breathe in diffuses from the alveoli into the blood whereas the carbon dioxide that people exhale moves from the blood into the alveoli. In lab, the students did an experiment that was based on the moral understanding of osmosis.
In the experiment they had a cell and an environment (beaker). In the cell they placed “cytoplasm” in it and in the environment it was deionized water. They were testing to see if the water from the environment was able to move inside the cell, and make the cell enlarge, or if the water from the cell would leave to go into the environment. The students had to wait and watch the cell for an hour to see the result, the cell grew because of the process of osmosis. While doing this specific experiment the students discovered that the cell was permeable because it allowed the water to reside in it. Osmosis is constantly working in and out of the human body, for instance in the kidney. When a person has a bad kidney they have to go through kidney dialysis which helps the kidney get back on track with the original functioning. The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the effect of changing the concentration of sodium chloride solution on the rate of osmosis in tubes of potatoes. This was maintained using equal measurements of the potato tubes and applying them into the different concentrations of sodium chloride, 0%, 2%, 5%, 10%, 20% and 26%, in beakers then measuring the change in mass of the potato tubes afterwards. The time taken for all potato tubes to be placed in solution was 15 minutes. The Importance of Diffusion to Living Organisms Diffusion is basically the movement of chemical species (ions or molecules) under the influence of concentration difference. The cell membrane has to have aquaporins, which are water channel proteins, that move the water across the membrane. If there is a water and salt solution outside the cell, the salt can enter the cell by diffusion, but the cell membrane is not permeable to the water. Because there is more solute solution inside the cell, there is less water. The aquaporins move the water across the membrane until equilibrium is reached.
