It has been a month since I left Independence, Missouri (Document A). While traveling on the Oregon Trail, I encountered a small group of people whom were also moving along (Document A). We decidedto stay together for the benefit of sharing our supplies. With this, we are now traveling with 2 wagons and about 8 people. We are going about 20 - 27 miles per day (Document B). Continuing on the route, we finally arrived at Chimney Rock. We plan to stay here for resting; some of the members are starting to get exhausted and sick. When getting to Chimney Rock, I noticed a few graves of people whom have died of the disease cholera (Document C). Some campers may need to watch out for cholera. I bought some of my supplies at the local store. I carried my knapsack containing my cradle, pickaxe, shovel, flint bread, blankets, and rifle (Document D). I tried to find an empty space where there were no people around, but that was nearly impossible. Finding myself at a ravine, I had some dirty looks from men that were aware that I was a woman digging for gold; I didn’t really care and started digging. To start, I dug a hole about four feet deep and came to an area of bedrock where gold is usually located (Document D). At the end of the day, I still had no gold. It is exhausting to dig for gold, but I’ll keep trying. I have been digging all day for about a month and a half, and so far I’ve picked up a few “slugs”, which makes a total of 24 ounces with the subtraction of spending some on food and other materials.(Document F). During the afternoon, I decided to walk around to get to know my surroundings a bit better. I noticed many gold diggers of all races.
