Freedom in speech and expression, religious practices and ideas, the soul of America. A soul that must be protected and nurtured at all costs, has endured conflict since the creation of this great country; however, the soul can be, and has been healed. Before his death, John Lewis, a civil rights activist, believed that, “Ordinary people. can redeem the soul of America by getting in what I call good trouble, necessary trouble”. Many have arisen to combat those challenging the soul of America, and have been victorious in healing the wound. I believe that “good trouble” can redeem the soul of America because of its power to gain publicity, invoke understanding, and the ability to inspire Americans to rise up against the challenge. When people see what is happening to these “free” citizens of America, they begin to understand their movements, and support them. When the country is united as one against almost any problem, especially when the conflict goes against the constitution, change ensues. Once you achieve understanding such as these civil activists did, through the great lengths, and showings of courage, the population is on your side; some are inspired. A powerful derivative of understanding, inspiration, can also arise from good trouble. Inspiration is perhaps the strongest feeling someone can have towards a movement; feeling the power to fight the problem yourself. When civil rights activists proved they were worth following, through their actions against segregation laws, some Americans felt empowered to speak out themselves and fight these laws. This led to mostly peaceful protests filled with people that were so inspired by these activists and their personal stands, that they gathered in masses to help shape change on their
