Oprah has become a household name in America through her television show and network, magazine, sponsorship and movies. When you think of Oprah you most likely associate her wealth and status and view her as a pop culture icon. Oprah used her television show as a platform to help others making her the first example of something called “Change Your Life Television”. On “The Oprah Winfrey Show” Oprah did a good job of “taking people that needed a revamp in their life and provided them with physical and monetary things to improve how they lived” (Lofton 2). This caused Oprah to be viewed as a savior for people but has also showcased the power that capitalism has in America. Spiritual capitalism is best described as attempting to reach spirituality by purchasing things that’s make you feel better and more successful in life which in theory will bring you closer to your spirituality and overall well-being (Lofton 2). This first connection is seen in an episode of the Oprah Show where Oprah rewarded women by making them princess for a day then pampering them and buying them new clothes, care, and home appliances. Lofton states, “Episodes included two-minute spots titled "Remembering Your Spirit,"…Show topics switched from political debates and family dramas to individually oriented spiritual adjustment exercises (603). Oprah began to show her views how to get in touch with their spirituality. She does this by telling them to read books endorsed by her book club, volunteer at her non-profit organizations, and become part of organizations she sponsored. With her fan group growing and trying to follow in her footsteps her revenue increased because she capitalized on the market.
