Her father and mother divorced and her father, Vermon re-married to Velma. Therefore, they were hoping that it would be a good influence if she was living under strict supervision. She got the hope award, has her own magazine, received the presidential medal of freedom, spoke out against child abuse, received the Kennedy Center Honor and Jean Hersholt Humanity Award.
