Introduction
As the public watches, listens, and is entertained, television talk shows are rewriting the cultural scripts, altering perceptions, social relationships, and relationships to the natural world. Television talk shows offer society a world of blurred boundaries. Cultural distinctions between public and private, credible and incredible witnesses, truth and falseness, good and evil, sickness and irresponsibility, normal and abnormal, therapy and exploitation, intimate and stranger, fragmentation and community are manipulated and erased for our distraction and entertainment. Television talk shows are dramatically increasing and have become quite popular with American viewers. Despite the public's interest in television talk shows,

When assessing what it takes to be a good announcer, Oprah is a great reference. She always seems to come prepared about the topic of the day before the show. Preparation before shows allows Oprah to get a better understanding of what she will be discussing, especially on controversial topics. She is able to support both sides of the issue and never makes the audience unsatisfied. She has a high self-esteem. She always has confidence and is full of energy. Her high amount of confidence and higher self-esteem contributes to making her show as successful as it is. She listens really well to her guests’ opinions, which shows a lot of respect. She answers them with direct eye contact and gives them in debt responses. Other characteristics that make her a good announcer are her use of appropriate words and language. She knows what words are appropriate for each individual or group that she is interviewing. Oprah has an adventurous spirit and her eagerness to learn which explains how widespread her topics can be. Talking in nice tempos and at good rates makes it easier for Oprah’s guests and even her audience to follow her. Overall, she is very unique and funny that has a talent to make others laugh. Oprah has become one of the best and well known hosts in American talk shows due to her amazing skills and
One of the reasons Oprah is a modern renaissance woman is for all the good deeds she does. She made her first debut as a news anchor which then turned into her own talk show. In her show The Oprah Winfrey Show she talked with celebrities, like Michael Jackson who had not been interviewed in 14 years. She also premiered in her first acting gig in the movie, The Color Purple. Her performance was so great that she got nominated for both a Golden Globe and
...n Oprah for Time 100's Most Influential People of the Century. Her article highlights Oprah's achievements throughout her career, and explains how Oprah managed to steal the spotlight from other talk show host through her reinvention of "rapport-talk," to one based on back and forth discussion everyday issues and friendship. She states that Oprah's legacy is that she evokes a sense of caring because she herself cares about her audience. Tannen appeared frequently on the Oprah Winfrey show and had the opportunity to be featured on the show when she released her book, "You Just Don't Understand: Women and Men in Conversation" which Oprah praised and related to.
Perhaps the most notable triumph of Oprah Winfrey is her job as host of her own television show, "The Oprah Winfrey Show". Because anyone is free to decide what they choose as a career, she had the opportunity to create this show. The viewings and acceptance of the consumers to her show allowed it's prosperity. Keep in mind that Oprah had no control of the success her show would receive, although she had free decision to do what she pleased with it, it was the decision of the consumers
As we watch, listen, and are entertained, trash television talk shows are changing our perceptions, rewriting our cultural roles, altering our social relationships, and ultimately our relationships with the ordinary world. Talk shows offer us a quasi-world of indefinite margins. They create a sensational community, without any of the social and personal responsibilities that are attached to real life. For some, the concept is an appealing notion: therapy as entertainment. The central distortion that these shows advocate is that they give useful therapy to guests and useful advice to the audience. Whether you believe it or not, trash talk shows are arenas for real people.
Oprah Winfrey was once a follower of the trash TV format, but her long running popular TV talk show has since been reformed. Like Jerry Springer, the Oprah Winfrey Show takes talk TV to its extreme, but Oprah goes in the opposite direction. Oprah’s show is probably the most immaculate talk show there is. It is unlikely that you will find guests on Oprah that have committed adultery, or have sold their souls to the devil. Instead, the show focuses on the improvement of society and an individual’s quality of life.
Oprah Winfrey is a powerful women. She has done and continues to do so much for the people around her and has been rewarded rightfully so. She displays many talents and ambitions that it would only be fair to call her a modern day Renaissance Individual. Because she is exactly that; a person who demonstrates a wide variety of talents and knowledge. And Oprah Winfrey is exactly
Television has come a long way from the first black and white silent show to its current craze, which happens to be the television talk shows. In the nineteen eighties, the daytime airwaves were monopolised by soap operas and game shows but the trend gradually evolved to talk shows towards the nineties. Being before my time, research appears to imply that the talk show intrusion of our airwaves all seemed to start with the originals such as Geraldo Riveria, Donahue and Sally Jesse Rafael. Surprisingly though, some of the morality and the topics remain somewhat similar throughout the years, such as the improvement of society and the quality of life often show on shows like the Oprah Winfrey Show and the Montel Williams Show.
Oprah’s childhood was not the greatest. Her unmarried parents split up, and she grew up on a farm with her grandmother. She developed rapidly and could read before she was three. Also, she was tested out of kindergarten and second grade, thus only taking first grade and skipping to third grade. When she turned six, she started to live with her mother and was very lonely. However, she began her speaking profession around that time. “She was invited to recite poetry at black social clubs and church teas, where she became known as ‘the little speaker.’ At 12, during a visit to her father in Nashville, she earned $500 for a speech she delivered at a church” (“Winfrey, Oprah”). As you can tell, Oprah started young in her profession and was determined to make a living off of this since her prior experiences.
Oprah Winfrey is a name that needs no introduction to most people in the world. Starting her journey with nothing, today , she has everything anybody could wish for and more. She has the money, the friends, the fame, the respect and as she repeatedly has pointed out as a comical comment, the shoes.
During her childhood years living with her mother, Oprah had very little money and life was difficult. She wants to help as many children as possible grow up in a sound, safe, and educational environment. Oprah has changed the world with all of her organizations and charity efforts. Oprah Winfrey has helped thousands of children attend school with her scholarships that she has funded. Many of these children would never go to school or continue their college career without her amazing efforts of providing financial support to these children. Oprah also helped build homes for families through her efforts with Habitat for Humanity and her donations after Hurricane Katrina helped families start their lives over again after the mass destruction of the hurricane by providing the financial support to rebuild many communities and neighborhoods(“Oprah Winfrey”). When researching Oprah Winfrey, I now realize why she is such an incredible person. The world is a better place because of Oprah Winfrey. This is another example of a person that has worked very hard to achieve her goals in life. Oprah strived for her dreams of being able to give back to the community and world. Oprah came from nothing, built an empire and became one of the most influential people in the world. While building an empire, Oprah has influenced millions of people achieve a better way of live. Oprah has positively
Winfrey used almost every communication style throughout her career, but there is one that I want to go in-depth on, which is assertive communication. Oprah Winfrey is so successful because she expresses how she feels without demanding an answer. Celebrities and other guest are so comfortable speaking with her because she’s so down to earth and she really listens to what you have to say. Oprah knows how uncover what someone is going through without coming off too strong, and that’s what people want. Assertive communication is how you get the job done, and Oprah is phenomenal at using this particular communication style. An example of her using this style brings back to the interview with Michael Jackson. There was so much that everyone wanted to ask Michael but he felt comfortable speaking with Oprah because she didn’t come off too strong or that she wanted his information for personal gain(whether that was the case or not). She asked Michael questions that the world wanted to know, but she also paid attention and cared about what came out of his mouth. Mrs. Winfrey’s assertive communication method is impeccable. This style encouraged and led others to believe that they could follow in her footsteps and become a substantial interviewer/media personnel like
Oprah Winfrey is a role model to thousands of people out there. She has made people understand the purpose of life and how to live it in a way that you are happy. She wants people to help and care for unprivileged people. Oprah thinks that education is a right and not a privilege. She wants everybody to have a good education no matter who they are. Oprah has an amazing story. She went through so many failures in her life but yet still carried on. She had such a tough childhood that actually mad her stronger as a person, that shows us today that just because you had rough parts in life where you didn’t want to carry on you can still get through it and get to where you want to be. Failure determs the level of success you are on and that’s what
Although when she was young Oprah was faced with many difficult problems, she stuck to her school-work and pursued her love of teaching (Fry, web). One thing that Oprah is known for is her love of reading, teaching, and learning. This passion has helped her move forward and help others that are less fortunate than herself (Fry, web). These troubling things that Oprah was faced with turned her into a relatable, caring figure that many people would follow.... ... middle of paper ...
