Exit, Pursued by Desire
William Shakespeare’s Hamlet is considered the best tragic play he has ever written. The play is a little over five hours long, and it is Shakespeare’s longest play (Markham). Set in the country of Denmark, Hamlet is a story about a young prince named Hamlet who suspects foul play when his mother, Queen Gertrude, suddenly marries Claudius, Hamlet’s uncle and the brother of the late king, and declares himself the king of Denmark. As he is supposed to be the heir to the throne, Hamlet sets on a quest to avenge his father’s death when his father’s ghost tells him that Claudius murdered him. Hamlet decides to kill Uncle Claudius, and his decision incites his madness.
The main character Hamlet is the center character bent on avenging his father’s death. The revenge plot of the play is the main storyline, and though there are several subplots within the play, Ophelia’s storyline stands out among them. The Ophelia in Branagh’s film is an adult who almost looks as if she is the same age as Hamlet. When her brother warns Ophelia about Hamlet, Ophelia mentions the double-standards and quickly dismisses her brother. Though, she tries to reason with her father about Hamlet’s affection. During this scene, flashbacks of Ophelia and Hamlet making love in bed are shown, which tells the viewer that Ophelia is experienced and has already given her virtue to Hamlet. One who has read the original play might assume whether there was a sexual relation between Hamlet and Ophelia. In fact, Shakespeare’s script makes the relationship ambiguous. With Branagh choosing to show the sexual relation between Hamlet and Ophelia, it completely discloses the information about the two and gives the viewer a better understanding of their
