During high school, I participated in a neurology camp where several neurologists came and discussed occupations in the medical field. My experiences at this camp sparked my interest in shadowing a healthcare professional at a hospital. During my experiences at this camp, I was rewarded a certificate for having the most unique questions out of all the participants. Therefore, I possess essential qualities such as inquisitiveness that will allow me to be able to successfully shadow this profession of my choice. Even though many people argue that I am not a very talkative person, I am well known by my teachers to ask important questions while in the learning environment. Frist of all, my trait of open-mindedness will allow me to effectively shadow …show more content…
When I am given the opportunity to shadow a doctor, I will display this trait by accepting the beliefs and traditions of all of the patients and employees within the hospital. Furthermore, I will actively listen to the ideas of others in the hospital environment and provide my own opinions which will further enhance the conversation. According to a study conducted at Harvard University, open-minded medical students are 50 percent more likely to receive offers for shadowing opportunities at different hospitals around the country. Based on this statistic, my trait of open-mindedness will allow me to be more accepted by my peers around the hospital. Although several people argue that being open-minded does not determine whether a person is fit for this opportunity, it is an essential criterion for measuring how well a person will perform when given the opportunity to shadow or visit a hospital. My open-minded nature will expand my willingness to learn more about a work that interests me and my inquisitiveness will furthermore expand about my desire to explore more about this …show more content…
When I am selected to shadow at a hospital, I will display this trait by constantly asking relevant questions and inquiries to the doctors in order to further expand my knowledge in the area of my choice. Based on evidence gathered from Chippenham Hospital, it was shown that medical students who demonstrated curiosity during internships were 25 percent more likely to pass with an above average score on their medical exams. My curiosity and inquisitiveness will prepare myself to shadow at a hospital because it will make my learning experience more rewarding and it will allow me to be more prepared for upcoming medical exams in the future. Some people may say that I do not ask effective questions in the classroom setting; however, my curiosity is displayed when I ask a plethora of important questions after class to expand my knowledge on a certain topic. My curiosity will allow me to obtain the best results out of this shadowing opportunity and my communication skills will also aid in this memorable

1. Please briefly share the influences on your decision to pursue the field of medicine, including shadowing experiences and other medical related activities.
Most doctors agree that the dehumanization in the clinical setting can lead to the loss of a patient because of the lack of respect they are given. That is a great incentive for doctors to try to get to know their patients and make them feel as comfortable as possible. When a patient attends a teaching hospital where aspiring doctors exam patients in groups, there is no real reward for them learning personal information about the patient. They will move on to start their own practice and probably never see the patient again. However, just because the patients are at a teaching hospital does not make them any less important, so how can medical school programs promote patient-physician relationships when the physician has nothing to gain?
I first learned how to translate my curiosity into hard work as a chemistry student at Cornell, and since then I have found great inspiration in new learning environments. As a medical student, transitioning from lectures to my clinical years, I extended the curiosity) developed in the classroom to patient care. During my rotations, I constantly questioned why certain steps were chosen to manage patients. I learned to refer to journals and to critically assess articles' levels of evidence, which facilitated decisions in patient care. Even as a medical student, I could make a difference by presenting articles to the team, and I dedicated myself to doing
Ever since I was younger, I wanted to get into the medical field. Both my grandmothers used to work in the hospital and I would always wanted to tag along. Following them to work influenced my decision to work in a hospital. Every time I tag along, I would see many interesting things that would catch my attention and make me curious. There was a lot of materials such as the stethoscope, weighing machine, and etcetera that I would pretend to be a doctor or nurse examining imaginary people. It was absolutely perfect because I always wanted to help people. So this fall of 2014, I will be starting my education on becoming a nurse anesthetist.
... a patient down when they are scared. I know this career will not always be an easy one because you will come across some patients that can be combative, grumpy or scared and being able to learn how to communicate with them will make the process more smoothly. There will come a time when you come across a patient that will pull at your heart, as hard as it is I will have to keep my emotions in control but not so much so that I forget how to be gentle and caring with the patients because you may never know what their stories are.
Practicing in the medical field is a respectable profession, since its main goal is to help others when they are in need. Although, I’m not sure of what job I will have, I do know that it will be in the field of medicine. I hope through the mentoring program I will be able to decide if a Certified Medical Assistant is the job for me.
I want to learn more about the medical field. I am very fascinated in the science aspects. My decision to pursue a career as an Anesthesiology Assistant is hinged on three factors; first, a desire to advance in the healthcare sector and be able to take up higher responsibilities in patient care; secondly, an intentional process of building a healthcare career that would be personally fulfilling and rewarding; and thirdly, embarking on a career path that will enable me to integrate my prior education, experiences and skills, and use them as a backdrop for effective care delivery. My undergraduate degree is in Psychology. I undertook studies in this area because I had always had a deep-seated desire to help people recover from adverse situations. At the same time, I trained and work as a medical assistant, which has enabled me to have a lot of patient contact. Based on my knowledge of psychology and my clinical experiences, I began to explore career advancement options
