Open Arms of Minnesota, a nonprofit organization, tackles the problem of food inaccessibility to certain groups of people. Their services are geared towards people with specific and sensitive nutritional needs, due to chronic illnesses and health conditions. With their vision and mission respectfully being; “With open arms, we nourish body, mind, and soul…we see a world of abundance where people who are sick won’t go hungry” (Open Arms of Minnesota., 2017). A nonprofit organization needs people to volunteer and help sustain the organization. I am proud to say that I persuaded a few of my classmates to join me at Open Arms. Volunteering at Open Arms I was part of their bigger effort in meeting needs and contributing to the community. The most important lesson that was learned from my time at Open Arms, is the need for more people like Bill Rowe who is the founder of Open Arms, his leadership and courage is admirable. It’s not an easy responsibility to take on, being a leader, people were relying on him to meet their basic human needs. it is incredibly important that one learn as much as possible about the ways that different kind of barriers affect individuals, as well as recognizing the organizations that are trying to combat the issues.
